What does the abbrv PC mean in the PC SYNC terminal?

view profile

BUroKHUli & His Vegetable Hordes says:

Hello,

Can I buy a PLUG for this PC SYNC in any AUDIO SUPPLY or HARDWARE? What do you call that in an industry standard?

I am referring to that CIRCULAR FEMALE PLUG on the left of the photo

Kenneth Armstrong [deleted] says:

from www.photonotes.org:

The “PC” here stands for “Prontor/Compur,” two manufacturers of leaf shutters used in older and large format cameras. It does not stand for “personal computer” in this context, and so a camera with a PC socket cannot be hooked up to a computer through it. Sometimes referred to as a “German” socket, the PC connector is notoriously unreliable, and exists today out of historical momentum.

Glad you asked?

No you can't buy anything to connect to this at any hardware store anywhere in the world (I feel pretty safe declaring something so bold).

You'll probably have good luck at a decent camera store.

I'm not sure how much you know about that connector so I'll just give you a basic description just in case...

It's for triggering an external flash or strobe unit. All it does is tell the flash to fire. It doesn't do anything fancy. The mount on top of your camera communicates to an E-TTL flash a lot more intelligently.

All studio lighting comes with a pc sync port to use with that connector. In my opinion wireless is the way to go. There's nothing more annoying than being tethered to a strobe while you're shooting in the studio.

I hope this was helpful. Again, I'm not sure how much you know about these things so I gave as much info as I could. Besides, maybe someone else might find it useful.

You'll also notice this connector on some more advanced light meters. This is also used to trigger the strobes for meter readings in the studio.

Also, you should know that there a ton of different pc sync connectors out there. Make sure you bring your camera with you when you buy the cable. Maybe even bring a strobe with you too.

A friend of mine who owns a local camera store showed me a dozen different pc sync connectors a few weeks ago. I was trying to make an adapter to go from my wireless trigger to my hotshoe flash. A simple hotshoe connector and a trip to Radio Shack and I was rolling.

fwgroove : you rock dude..........it was well said and simple :) I must add, I am just taking my time asking which CORD to use because in 2 weeks time, I'll be getting my POCKETWIZARD and would like to be sure which cord to use to fire my STROBE, FLASH & CAMERA remotely.

If by any chance you have those setups, can you take some photos of them for me and specify which goes to where and what cord you use? ............ hehehe!! Im desperate
