Confused a bit about "stretch the height". Do you mean stretch the height of the image? The canvas?

stretch the height of the image. you want that the image becomes a square.

I just noticed how this technique highlights the amount of air pollution in the city.

This is the most entertaining little recipe I've seen in a long time, so here's my effort:

From this original:

If you look closely, you can see two traffic signs. In order to recreate the left-hand side of the pre-dawn glow, I blended in a mirror image of the photo, which I expect would be helpful for a few not-quite-panoramic images to make use of this technique.

This technique has also been mentioned in the Create your own planet group.
You might also like still another (more demanding) technique to produce other types of planetoids:

Hello,
This is really cool stuff. I did try this tutorial on my own computer and it's amazing unless you can see the difference between the left and the border very well (I did try with the skyline in the example)
I did try the clone stamp but I think I don't use it right? Does anyone has an example on how to use the clone stamp in this case?
Thx a lot!

Photojojo had a more detailed tutorial of this technique that included tips for selecting images: www.photojojo.com/content/tutorials/create-your-own-panor...
(on review it appears to have been written by the guy from the create your own planet group linked above.)
