A great thing about this technique is that there's so much distortion going on that you can start with a small or low quality image and get good results with many more pixles than the original. (Example below.)
I've put together a Photoshop 7 action with the steps, but the original tutorial is licensed under a no-derivative-works CC license and I'm waiting to hear back from the author about permission to post it here.

These are awesome! I've found that resized images look best when you add the dot-screen layer at twice the resolution you want to end up at. That is, if you want a finished product at 400x300 pixels (say, for the web), then take your nearly-finished image down to 800x600, add the Color Halftone effect, then resize down to 400x300.
I'll pay $$$ for White Poo Action Comics.

Very cool technique! Here's mine:

Original Size
I added a little more trickery to make the "stroke" around the edge of the photo look like it was drawn in ink instead of a computer generated straight line.
By the way, is there an equivilant to Comic Life for the Windows platform? My powerbook was stolen, and I haven't replace it with another mac yet...

Hey, folks!
Glad you're all enjoying the Comic Art Effect. You've posted some really cool pics here. This is exactly what a guy hopes for when he posts a tutorial!
Anyway! Just dropped by to let you know that, with the help of Lance McCord (the guy who started this thread) I have produced and made available a Photoshop action to achieve a reasonable facsimile of the effect from my original tutorial.
Here's the story.

Make sure your images are of a high enough resolution. And here's a tip (so far, exclusively here) most times increasing the resolution in Image Size is detrimental and doesn't actually help you meet resolution requirements, in this case it will work since the image is heavily processed by the effect. It will actually help a bit to fudge the resolution up a bit.
Also experiment with lightening or darkening the image beforehand. It will reveal color patches and details that might have otherwise been covered in shadow or blown out as highlight.

I'm feeling really stupid, 'cause I downloaded MacMerc.comComicArtEffect.atn.sit and downloaded StuffIt to decompress it.
Saved the atn file at Photoshop CS/Presets/Photoshop Actions and when I open PS CS I can't find that action!
Could you help me? I'd love to try this technic!

Another effect you might find interesting is just looking at the Ink layers by themselves. Turn off all the color layers and see if you don't find a really cool line art drawing that was just waiting to be discovered...I think the shot posted by Spirit635 would be a prime candidate for this experiment.

What is it about then? Bandwidth? I appreciate that you are offering the script for free and I don't want to sound ungrateful but as a web designer I would recommend not requiring additional software downloads if it's not absolutely necessary. Or, at a least use a more commonly used software title or in multiple zipped formats. Great tutorial though, fun stuff.

Does anyone have instructions on making this work with Photoshop 7 for a PC? I unzipped the file and managed to load it into Photoshop by dragging the file onto the actions pallette.
I ran into errors trying to run it, and found that the script is trying to point to non-existent folders on my PC. I was able to change the path on the "save" command, but not on the "displace" command, so I just created the folder it was trying to work with. Still ended up with an error when it hit Displace, saying that the file was empty.
The original image was just turned into the a picture with a bunch of lines.
I tried to register at the macmerc forum, but I couldn't.
On the forum there someone mentioned a stand-alone PC app that does this. Anyone know what that is?

OK - followed the tutorial linked to from the first posting (of 2 years ago!). Just kind of showing it doesn't matter too much which version of PS or CS you're using - I did one on PS Elements 6. Couldn't follow a couple of steps (LAB color and Channels) but I think it's ok.
