wow. just heard about it. I was looking at the footage on wcco and kmsp. Hard to imagine that bridge is gone. I used to take that road into work everyday and still do on the way home. I hope no one was killed. It looks pretty damn nasty.

It is a horrible thing - I am dreading going in to work tomorrow downtown, and finding out the extent of things from friends and coworkers.
Part of me just can't seem to believe it's real, but as I can see this clearly from my office window, I'm going to have to deal with it tomorrow morning.
The most uplifting thing I read was from all the people who weren't hurt badly because they wearing their seatbelts- that gave me a lot of hope about the whole situation.
The social/political fallout from this will be huge, I think.
my best wishes for all of you.

oh my.
I was sleeping when it must have happened. Then I started getting calls from family and friends to make sure I wasn't on it, I couldn't believe they were telling me the truth when they said it collapsed. It's scary when tragedies strike so close to home.
My prayers with everyone connected with this tragedy.

I saw a bunch of smoke out my window but just assumed a building was on fire and then my dad called. I live about 10 blocks from the bridge. We went down there and needless to say I am still in shock. My friends should've been there but were running late, thankfully. My thoughts & prayers are with everyone. I suggest everyone go this week and donate money or blood to the red cross.

I go home almost everyday from work, either by bike or car, under the bridge on the West Bank. I was not at work this week. It is pretty unnerving. My thoughts go out to everybody involved.

I talked to a woman and her son at the scene who went over in their mini van on the north side. Theirs must have been one of the last vehicles to fall. The boy told me they were headed straight down and flipped over landing on their roof. The boy was unharmed, his Mother had bandages on her fingers, and a bandaid on her face. They were waiting for her husband to come pick them up, he was stuck in traffic. They felt lucky to be alive. I have a photo of them and will post it to my FLICKR page.

Still around. No photos of the scene. For now I'm staying clear to avoid adding to the mess.
But since it's less than a mile from me, I'll get down there one of these days.

Very sad news indeed....my prayers go out to those affected by this tragedy up in the Twin Cities.
I was very shocked when I first heard about it this yesterday evening, especially since I've driven on this bridge several times. I recently uploaded a photo I took on the bridge back in 2004.

I was on the Franklin Ave bridge when this happened. Because of the weather, I chose to ride my scooter across Franklin vs. taking 35W in my Jeep.
I'm still pretty livid after hearing and seeing the reports.

Unfortunately, one of my co workers and his family were on the bridge. He is in serious condition and his wife is in critical condition. We do not know what the status is of his two daughters. But they are all alive, at least.

Thankfully my family and friends who use this route regularly are all accounted for.
The thing that still makes me sick to my stomach when I think about it is that is my normal route, at that time of day and has been for the last 5 years.
Last night I went to visit a friend in Shakopee instead of going straight home from work...I shudder at the thought of what might have been.
All thoughts and prayers are with those still left with missing family/friends. On a brighter note I work for Quality Bicycle Products out of Bloomington and 90% of our morning phone traffic today was from our Dealers across the Nation just "checking in making sure Q's employees were alright"...that's powerful stuff there!

A few friends and I were boating on the Mississippi Saturday afternoon,,,, We went under the 35W Bridge and I remember looking up at it admiring the structure,,, and also a little afraid because something just didnt look right.
Four days later, its gone. Fortunately, I have a few photos from a prior trip thru the locks to remember it by.
I've thought of adding a set of these to my page and titling it "Memorial to 35W #9340".
Is that in bad taste?

It may be a little early yet. Keep things in perspective though.
Seems kinda silly to make a memorial to a bridge, and 40 years of service isn't even enough for most people to be able to retire. I wouldn't say its performance was worth admiration, more, admonition.

I think she might've been referring to the "#9340" part? A somewhat sarcastic nod to the plethora of 35W bridge sets popping up now?
Or not, I don't know.

So is anybody angry at those who refuse to raise or pay more taxes for infrastructure (re)investment? The eroding infrastructure has been an issue for decades, but no one (especially Republicans) has had the guts to do anything about it. Now there will be action based on the emotion of the moment not on sound decisions based on fact.

No, and don't use a tragedy to further your political goals. That's gross.

I believe the bridge was I-35W bridge #9340.
In which case I don't see how it could be "offensive." Sarcasm was the only thing I could come up with that might make it offensive to anyone.

No political goals from me - I could give a crap about political goals; I am just concerned about what is right and what is important for the future survival of the country as we used to know it. Yes it is a tradegy, but proper planning prevents decisions made solely from the emotions that flow immediately after a tradegy occurs. Maybe if people think about this kind of stuff before the tradegy occurs we wouldn't need to be having this discussion at all. Think about how many laws are written after something terrible has happened because of the public outcry, not because it was a perceived problem before it happened.

Whoa, where’d that come from? Unless she’s running for office and using that as her campaign slogan, I’d hardly call those “Political Goals”.

I have to agree. Wanting to invest in safe roads is not a political goal. It's common sense. I believe Hoary's point is that hopefully the politicians that prevented an increase in Transportation funding will now change their minds and support funding safe bridges and roads. It's horrible that it might have taken a tragedy to get people to see how important it is to fund transportation properly, but hopefully this sort tragedy can be avoided in the future if we take action now.

As I mentioned in another thread somewhere, politicians are not the only ones to blame. Voters bear equal responsibility each time they reject a candidate as a tax increaser simply for pointing out that hey, we have to pay for this stuff somehow. The ones who promise to reduce spending talk a nice talk, but spending cuts are rarely done responsibly. Either the burden is pushed down to the local level (where programs are even less affordable), or the cuts come out of "unglamorous" departments such as transportation and infrastructure.

I went by on the East Bank last night to look around briefly - there are so many people all over the place, ignoring the police tape and crowding around to get a view. I was there too, obviously, and am feeling somewhat conflicted about that, but I wanted to see things for myself. I made sure that I wasn't creating any more work or trouble for any of the officers from all over the area who were there to help.
I'm glad everyone in here is alright, and was very happy to hear that they've lowered the number of missing to 8 now, from 20 to 30.

Olivander: Well said. But I think that's enough.
This thread is meant to check on whether other members were affected or not. Soapboxes abound elsewhere. Please create your own thread if you must vent. Believe me, I wish I would vent, but OUT OF RESPECT (please look it up if need be), I ask all to keep that...urge...out of this thread. I hope we can make that distinction.
So far, I'm glad to see there are some that care enough to have said they're ok, and others about their personal experience/connection with the event.

Heh, I've vented my political stuff elsewhere, so no more of that.
I got some pictures the night of and I'm working on clearing disk space to be able to squeeze them onto my computer. I was on the Stone Arch Bridge mostly, so I didn't see a whole lot. Just seeing who was in the crowd was pretty amazing, though. I know there were some people there visiting from Australia and I'm sure there were others from around the world watching as well, certainly a reason why the story dominated headlines everywhere the next day.
