A photowalk idea...

view profile

rrazor is a group administrator rrazor  Pro User  says:

Is anyone interested in long exposure / nighttime photography?

Perhaps a meet-up/walk could be arranged just before sunset, and we can continue shooting until dark. I've only got one tripod, but perhaps folks could bring extras so that everyone can get in on the night photography action.

That's a great idea! Sunset into early night would be a terrific time to go. I have a tripod as well.

I have two tripods... one is a little on the heavy side (I use it for a 4x5 camera, usually). Any ideas for good night shot locations?

My favorite nighttime subject is the Mississippi. I think it would be fun to capture a busy Friday / Saturday evening in Uptown, or the zany 1st ave bar crowd, etc.

Of course, the possibilities are endless—grain elevators, factories, industrial areas, the river road, one of the many campuses, alleyways, highways, Loring Park / Sculpture garden, high parking ramps (or other high vantage points), the witch's hat, bridges... and onwards.

For the first go, perhaps we could meet over in the St. Anthony Main area. There's the old Pillsbury A building, neon, Nye's, and easy access to the Hennepin Ave, 3rd Ave, and Stone Arch bridges. There are also several drinking establishments...

i'd love to capture some interesting people shots, and i think the bridge idea sounds great, too. my ass is not entering any sort of grain elevator, unless it's to remain planted on the ground. luck is rarely on my side, and i'd be the fool falling to my death....ick.

I'm affraid my crappy point and shoot won't be of any value on a night-type walk... But of course I'll go anyway.

I'd love to go. I'd have to use my 35mm SLR, though, so I'd need a lot of guidance on exposure times and film type and where to get it developed and stuff. Yeah, count me in.

i'm definately interested. i only have one tripod but i also have a clamp that has a ballhead i would be willing to let someone use, it works pretty good if you have something to fasten it to and the camera is not too heavy. (this shot was taken with it.)

going as a group would also provide some security via strength in numbers.

I would suggest doing it on a weekend closest to or on the full moon, it makes a big difference for exposure time.

In regards to "security via strength in numbers", I live in the Saint Anthony Main area, and while I've never had any issues in the more than 2 years that I've lived here, it would be nice to have a group of tripod wielding pals around... : )

Also! Heading out on or near the full moon sounds like a great idea, I think.

Dudes, I used to wear a bullet proof vest for a living, and I carried cuffs. I've got your backs. I might only be 5'2", but who gives - it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog, right?

I wasn't EVER scantily clad while on the job, but here's a taste of what the gear looked like:

I've a tripod I'd happily give to any who are lacking such ... note, it's not a *good* tripod and I used to use matchbooks (et. al) to make it more 'level.'

I pretty much cannot get weekends off. I'll be entirely envious of your meets as was I this last weekend.

But myself, and my 15-yr-old daughter both were suffering through a malady termed "mono." She was back to school after two weeks. I'm still recovering.

My neck [glands] still is the size of my right thigh.

I've got coodies.

Cheers...

A night shoot is a great idea. I have a couple of extra tripods I can bring--one's big, heavy, tall (9 ft max), one is small and light.

St Anthony/Main St. area seems like an excellent place to me.

For exposure, most camera meters will work a little while after sunset. There are exposure guides on the 'net you can google for. Start with www.thenocturnes.com (definitely check out their list of stuff to bring along).

I'm glad there's interest! I must confess, I rushed out and snapped some night shots after starting this thread.

If we want a weekend that coincides with a full moon, we'll have to wait until... April 15th. However, we can work with a nearly full moon March 11th, or half-full moon as early as February 18th.

What do you guys think? I'm willing to go out and shoot anytime.

The moon would be a factor only if we were going for those really long exposure shots, those 180-second exposure types, like those guys in Rhode Island take. Like this one:

But we can get lots of good urban night shots with the light from signs, street lights, cars, etc. any night/evening.

I am buying a new tripod, so I will have an extra tripod available for someone's use. In fact, if anyone is interested in a tripod...

Let's plan on March 11th for the night photowalk. We could meet at Tugg's or another place on St. Anthony Main and walk about. Objections? Casual observations? Obstructions? ...

This sounds like a great idea - count me in. I've been wanting to get down there for some after dark shooting, but have always been a little leery of doing so alone, so this should be great.

I too have an extra (somewhat less sturdy) tripod, but as I will most likely be taking the train downtown and walking from there, I'd rather not bring it unless I'm sure someone needs it, so let me know if anyone still needs one and I'll lug it along.

hmmmmm...way down in the specs it says the list price is going to be 1,399 USD but also €1,399. So it'll cost you considerably less if you buy it with dollars. I wonder if that's correct.
