La bambola si inserisce perfettamente nel filone degli knock–offs o cloni di Barbie, bambole che cercano di imitarne le caratteristiche, offrendo peró qualitá scadente a un prezzo inferiore. Distribuita dalla ditta Ceppi-Ratti, esce sul mercato nel 1971, in blister, abbronzata e in costume da bagno e cappellino, rifacendosi apertamente al modello della Barbie Malibu, venduta proprio nello stesso anno. La bambola messa in vendita era Maddie Mod, prodotta a Hong Kong per la Princess Grace, ( Mego) su licenza (forse…), ribattezzata con un nome vagamente esotico e sicuramente piú pronunciabile dalla clientela italiana!

Tra le tante bambole che assumeranno l’identitá di Tanya in Italia, dopo Maddie Mod:
-Petra, bambola tedesca della Plasty/ Lundby/ Airfix, a piú riprese.
-Karina, sempre tedesca, della Bush, anche lei a piú riprese.
- Princess of Flowers Leeanna (che sará anche venduta come Petra in Germania),
e poi Lace della Creata.
-Betty Teen della Tong ( a sua volta venduta come la popolarissima Gloria in Sudamerica.
L’ultimo cambiamento radicale risale al 2000, anno in cui Tanya adotta un corpo e un viso completamente nuovo e decisamente gradevole, dalle fattezze vagamente manga, un corpo ben modellato, capelli di qualitá migliore rispetto al passato, abiti di qualità discreta e qualche tentativo di produrre alcune linee da collezione, come la serie Zodiaco e la Principessa Giapponese. Fanno la loro comparsa anche alcune amiche. In seguito, a parte cambiamenti nella pettinatura, Tanya non ha subito altre modifiche, nemmeno nel trucco del viso.

Vista l’attuale crisi del giocattolo tradizionale, che ha colpito duramente anche Barbie, la bambola per eccellenza, non possiamo fare altro che chiederci cosa riserverá il futuro a Tanya. Intanto, vale la pena dare uno sguardo al suo interessantissimo passato.


For the first time in her “life”, Tanya, the longest-running Italian fashion-doll has a website on her own, filled with surprising information, gossip and trivia about her!

This doll fits perfectly in the Barbie knock–offs and clones history. Knock-off dolls are dolls that try to offer the same features of a Barbie doll at a lower price and even inferior quality. Distributed by the Ceppi-Ratti Italian brand, Tanya was on the market in 1971, in a blister packaging, suntanned and wearing a pink bathing suit and hat, imitating Malibu Barbie, on sale that same year. The doll for sale was indeed Maddie Mod, made in Hong Kong for Princess Grace, ( Mego ) and renamed in a way that could seem exotic enough , but still easy to pronounce for the Italian buyers.!

After Maddie Mod many other dolls will be sold in Italy as Tanya:

-Petra, a German doll by Plasty/ Lundby/ Airfix, for several times.
-Karina another German doll by Bush, for several times, too.
- Princess of Flowers Leeanna (she will be sold as Petra in Germany, too) and then Lace from Creata.
-Betty Teen by Tong (sold as Gloria in South-America and very popular).

The latest change happened in the year 2000, when Tanya adopts a totally new face and body mold, nice and well done, slightly manga-inspired, hair fibre of a much better quality than in the past, nice outfits and there is even an attempt at launching some collectable lines, such as Zodiac and Princess of Japan. Even a couple of friends are available for Tanya. Lately, no other major changes were brought to the doll, than hair-styles, not even in the face-up.

As even Barbie, the quintessential doll, has been severely hit by the crisis of the traditional toy, we can only wonder what the future will bring to Tanya. Meanwhile, let’s take a look to her interesting past!
