I started Wildflowers group back in March of this year in an effort to build up a collection of well-identified and clear photos of wildflowers of the US and Canada. It was with the hopes that we could use these photos somehow to help people identify flowers they see in the woods and fields and swamps.
Now, we've gone to phase two which is to use a graphic with tags to help people make quick and easy identification based on a few characteristics (flower shape, color and overall form).
The tagging scheme is this:
___flower color(s) – from this list: purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, brown, red, pink or white. When questionable or in doubt, add both (or all) colors.
___flower shape(s) – Primary shape of the flower from the following list: 2petals, 3petals, 4petals, 5petals, 6petals, manypetals, longcluster, roundcluster or oddshaped
___WFGNA (as a literal. It stands for Wildflower Field Guide of North America) We settled on something people could remember, yet was unique enough to be able to search for without too many stray hits.
secondarily we also tag:
___Common Name
___Binomial Name - Genus species
___Genus Name separately
and suggest tagging:
___Family Name - the taxonomic family (usually ending in "aceae.")
___State or Province
___GeoTags
I used all 100 tags (are we still limited to 100?) to create the IDentifier and was curious as to what other people's thoughts about this sytem of tag use might be.
Any improvements/criticisms or other schemes?
