History of Kunsthaus Tacheles
Built in 1908, the building originally housed a prototype of the modern department store, called the Friedrichstraßenpassage. Sold prior to World War I, it was subsequently used as a showroom for an electronics company in the 1920s, offices for the German Workers Front in the 1930s, and the central office for the Nazi SS in the 1940s. It sustained heavy damage during World War II, and various political and commercial interests occupied parts of the building during the 1950s and 60s. It was condemned in the 1970s and demolition began in 1980. The demolition of the remaining structure was to take place in 1990, but the group Künstlerinitative Tacheles occupied the building and saved it from destruction by having it declared a historic landmark. Since then it has grown into an international arts center, supported in part by its cinema and bar as well as government subsidies.
