TABBY advice needed URGENT!
 |
I know this is a photo forum and not really an advice forum but I thought I'd ask as I'm at my wits end.
We own a 3yr old female (spayed) tabby called Minne. For the past few months Minnie has been frequently attacked by a ? stray tomcat (he has no collar and isn't neutered).
These attacks began at night initially, he would sit and wait on her outside the cat flap, but now it is occuring during the day also. He has even been involved in a tug of war with us, him holding onto minnie trying to get back in the house and us pulling her in!
She is now scared to go out, stressed and pulling bits of fur out. We keep her in at night now.
Our local animal wardens refuse to try and trap it. I've ordered cat deterent spray to put along our garden fence where he enters the back yard.
Can anyone suggest something else?

Wow! I have a scar on the top of my hand from a similar experience with a bully cat. This guy would come right up to my living room window and claw to get in at my little girl.
My little girl weighs only 7 or 8lbs and this thing was an easy 15 or more.
One night I heard a ruckus and the bully was ON MY GIRL just fighting away. I screamed and ran toward them and he would not stop. I grabbed the water hose and blasted him and he would not stop. When I got close enough he stopped attacking her and attacked me...slashing the top of my right hand. Blood was pouring so I grabbed my cat and got us back in the house.
None of the neighbours knew who owned the beast, but they all knew who I was talking about! I called the dog pound and they weren't very helpful. I didn't know what to do. This cat was attacking cats all over the neighbourhood and wasn't afraid of people, water hoses, or broom handles!
One day he stood at my front door, like he was waiting for us...I couldn't go outside! I tried shooing and making noise with pans and bags and he would not budge.
I am not proud of this, but I had things to do in the yard and i was not going to be a prisoner of a bully cat, so I blasted him with pepper spray right in the face and it did NOTHING! He just shook his head, blinked and looked me like, "what else you got?"
This went on for years and animal control was absolutely not concerned.
We moved, not because of the bully cat, and that is how we got rid of the problem...but I can not lie, there were a few times I seriously thought about "taking care" of that menace once and for all. But when it came down to it, I couldn't...
Perhaps you can trap the cat yourself and take it to the shelter.

To be honest the easiest way (may not seem the nicest) but we moved into a house a couple months ago and there are quite a few stray animals around here, as well as pesty Crows eating the food out of my bird feeder. These strays scare everyone they have even attacked the neighbour kids...but I went out to a local store and bought the cheapest air soft gun I could find about $13 canadian these guns only have little plastic pellets so they don't hurt that much, and they won't break skin or really hurt the cat, but it might be enough just to scare it off, they also make kinda a loud noise which also might help. It sort of worked for us, none of the strays well come in the yard anymore they just sit outside the fence and taunt the cats now. But at least I know my cats arn't being hurt!

The idea of trapping it and taking it to the vet is a good one. Or tell animal control you think the animal could have rabies... they'll pick er up in no time.

I feel bad for the feral cats. Who knows how they became strays? They're just trying to survive. I like the idea of taking them to the humane society. At least they could be spayed/neutered and hopefully someone could claim them.

also if you could trap him...you might be able to take him to a local pet store...sometimes they take unwanded animals and socilize them, clean them up and give them a good home!

Check to see if there are any privately run shelters in your area. Gov't funded orgs are usually the worst for getting any help from. Check in the yellow pages for shelters. For a small donation I'm sure they'd come and help you out...or at least loan you a cage so you can trap and remove the animal.
I don't agree with hurting him but you do need to protect your cat. Get a litter box and keep her inside until the feral cat is taken care of. They can carry diseases like FIV (feline HIV) which is very contagious, as well as URI (upper respiratory infection), fleas, lice, distemper, rabies...all sorts of wonderful things that could be passed on to your cat.
Good luck and come back to let us know how you made out.

Check to see if you can find a local Pet Rescue group in your area, parsticularly one that regularly deals with cats. We received a LOT of help from one in the Atlanta area several years ago.
They were humane, kind, caring and efficient. Nobody ot hurt and some very nice but pesky feral cats ot new homes!!
You miht try "Google" - - - something like "No-Kill Animal Shelter" with the name of your town or "Pet Rescue" with the town or maybe even "Cat Rescue" - - - I would, personally, put "no kill" or "humane" in the search string, but that's just "me" . . .
Good luck - - - I, too, would like to know how this turns out for you. I'm so sorry for your kitty!!!

You could always get a dog that likes *your* cat ;-)
Seriously, check for a local feral support/rescue group in your area. That would be the best.

Cats hate water, and, a water pistol at the ready to shower him
from any angle - upstairs window, anywhere, he will not like it,
it won't hurt him, and then he will get used to knowing that if
he comes anywhere near, he gets showered. He will back off.
I have used this tactic many times on (Tom cats) new to the
area. It has always worked for me. I guess you will have
solved this problem now, but if not, do try. Best of luck.

Whenever my cat does something she knows shes not aloud to, we spray her with a water bottle, we don't drench her though! Lol, so like lesandbev... spray him!

We had a similar problem with a tom around our place, to the point that he would spray through our screen door (fly-screen, whatever you want to call it), and into the house. He also used to come in through the cat flap and spray inside, if he could. I squirted him with vinegar, which seemed to give him the hint, although if pepper spray didn't bother him, then I'm not so sure. Perhaps you could buy/borrow/hire a cat-trap from somewhere, and either take him to a shelter or vet. He sounds like a real tough-nut! Hope it all goes ok.
