or mackerel stripes... the fish bone explanation works to get the idea across, but it is a bit macabre...

When I read that, the first thing I did was check them all. ::laugh:: They do all have it to some degree, but mostly broken by white patches.

My tortie has red tabby markings all over her. Its like she was made tortie and then God said... Nah, let's really confuse them... and gave her all the markings of a red tabby!!

I have a kitten who is definitely a tabby with strong stripes on his legs and face. But his sides are all spots! It seems like spots come from partially faded stripes maybe. Does anyone else know where spots fit into the tabby picture?
My other tabby has spots on her stomach, which is a common "vest button" characteristic of tabbies, I read.

I just found this great webpage with drawings of the four categories of tabby markings. According to this, my older cat is a strongly-marked classic tabby, and my kitten is just right for a spotted tabby.
Scroll down to Patterns here tabby patterns

Your's are bi-color tabby (about half white and half tabby) :-)
Here's another site with cat color info
And if you're interested in the genetics of it... a link to Cat Fanciers page on genetics which is a good primer.
My sister is working on a database of pictures and the genetics of the cats. I can't wait for her to finish, cuz now every time I see a cat I think of it's genetic letters instead of admiring the kitty!

Most cats are tabbies,my girl is a ticked and the M on her forehead and mascara lines are very distinctive. I'm also thnking she maybe be part Wirehair or some kind of Rex because her fur is very dense and very resistant to shedding, I mean we are well into October and I have brushed her like twice and there is barely any fur. Her coat went from a bit course and rough to very silky -soft. She is two and half years old, very cute but the thing is her ,her fur looks like selkirk rex ,sort of but she has about four bands of ticking. She's a rescue from a shelter so who knows. The one thing I will say is an unpatterned ticked cat is very rare ,especially in the northeast. I volunteer at the shelter where I got my cat and I have only seen like 6 that were ticked, including a ticked tortie that got adopted last week, out of all of them and I started in May. She is my watch cat, anyone outside who we don't know she growls, other cats she just calmly watches them. She is not in any way ,vicious though ,she is very loving and affectionate but to hear her growl ,you wouldn't know it. She does seem a bit more tentative with men when they walk in but once seated she goes right up to you and rubs against your ankles and then after awhile ,invites you to play by rolling over on her back, giving you her cutest come hither look.. She has white mitts and a bikini with a buff-colored chin and buff colored belly, otherwise she is ticked with some striping on her legs and a ringed tail with a dark chocolate tipped tail and dark chocolate dorsal line. Her green eyes are extremely vivid. Have a great day!

LOL as soon as I read the blog about the 'M' I had to check both my cats... both are tabbies and my one is also Calico!! Now tomorrow when I go to work I am going to check all the cats there!!
Can anyone explain to me why tabbies get the 'M' on there foreheads?

In my experience, tabbies are a completely bonkers so maybe the M on the forehead is a warning for "mad cat" :o)

When I was a little girl I was told how tabbies got their "M".
In Bethlehem, after Mary gave birth to Jesus, there was so much noise and so many people coming to see the baby that Mary couldn't get him to sleep. There was a couple of cats that came to see what all the fuss was about. When they saw how tired and worried Mary looked because she couldn't settle Jesus, the cats cuddled up with the baby and purred 'till the baby went to sleep. Mary patted each of the cats on the head to thank thim, and when she took her hand away each cat was left with an "M". The marking has been passed down since then to show the world that tabbies are forever blessed because of the help they gave Mary.
OK - I was a little kid...
But I've also heard it said that it's a protective marking. From a distance, the "M" marking can look like a pair of eyes (kinda) and that may have stopped some predators from attacking because they think the cat is watching them.

The Shorter Oxford Dictionary derives "tabby" from "al atta'baya", a district in Baghdad famous for the manufacture of watered silks and taffetas, which of course ripple with this pattern of curving stripes.
And there are my two beautiful Pussies sitting there all unknowing and peaceful, when the kitchen radio has yet more frightful news from that city...

My tabby has grey roots and quite an unusual face, vet thinks she might be half British Shorthair. But she has the most amazing markings - mackerel and spotted with ticking, black paws, waistcoat buttons, mascara, the M, and a little white chin!
