Swiss Strobist meetup and workshop - ETH Hönggerberg, Zürich - Sunday, 21st September

What
We're planning a day/afternoon of photography on the ETH campus (website, map) at Hönggerberg in Zürich, on Sunday 21st September. Whoever is interested: please sign up here, so that we know how many people are coming along. Please also indicate what equipment you have and whether you'd be prepared to share it on the day.

Where and when
Meeting time is now decided: we're meeting at 12:00 in front of the cafeteria (just opposite the bus stop). For the ones driving: Wolfgang-Pauli-Strasse, Höngg. Please see the comments further down this page regarding driving directions and bus/train routes!

Aim of the day
We're planning on separating into a couple of groups, with one or more experienced strobist photographer/s with a group of people eager to learn. We'll set up a couple of shots, explain the lighting setup and then help you to achieve good results and set up alternatives if you have ideas.

If you're more into portraiture using available light, there are no rules to say that you have to use flash! We saw many great results achieved in Winterthur in March this year, many of which were achieved using natural light.

Equipment
Useful equipment to bring with you, if you can, includes camera and lenses (obviously!), any external flash guns you may have, a tripod, coloured plastic gels or filters (even lens filters might be useful) and a notepad and paper to jot down useful tips. If you only have a compact camera, you can still join in: there are several ways to get much better results with a point-and-shoot camera than just pointing and shooting!

If you're on a budget, don't worry! You can still achieve great results with even the most basic equipment! The lovely light in this photo of Jo was achieved using a flash gun, a piece of A4 copier paper and a rubber band!

If you have a little more equipment, such as optical triggers, light stands or spare flash guns, then please do bring them along. Be sure to mark anything you bring with you, so that equipment doesn't get mixed up if you intend sharing it with others. Also make sure that you bring your equipment in a waterproof bag, as the meet-up will be taking place in September and it may not be as great weather as we'll hope for.

Weather
If current autumnal weather is anything to go by, then make sure you bring/wear warm clothes, including hats and gloves. It may not be that cold if you're moving about, but it will feel much colder standing around or posing, and if you're holding a camera above waist level for any length of time whilst taking photos.

Models
Sarah Stone + partner, Sabrina Rees and friend, who are kindly going to be attending, will be working in exchange for (digital) copies of our photographs. Therefore, I will be making sure that everyone has details of where they will need to send their pictures: preferably edited and on a CD-R by post.

Update: Beat (strobe2go) has agreed that the photos taken on the day of the models attending may not be sold on, either by the models or by the photographer/s, without prior agreement. To this effect, each photographer present will need to sign an agreement; we think that this is perfectly reasonable and professional, but please leave a comment here if you don't agree.

Photographers attending
In: Béatrice, Victor, Eke, Mark and Jo, George, 2ni, Eloisa, Nick, Beat (strobe2go), Nina, Karin, Charles.J-R, Claudy (maybe), Oliver (visualist_ch), dontom_zh, Meder (novocainated), Stefan Pharies, Valerio Soncini, L Todd Austin.

Looks like I am not with the crowd once more :> As for the location I would suggest something with indoor possibility, as there "could" be rain ;)

That's a good idea: Eke has suggested a location in Zürich which covers nature, urban and cover for bad weather:

Just in case it gets as cold as the Winterthur meetup, ETH Hönggerberg has a cafe which is open at the weekends:

It's at location #16 on this map:

... but don't just blindly follow your GPS or map because most of that road is bus-only and you won't be able to turn into it coming from Höngg or the City. Once you get to the ETH there are signposted car parks at the locations marked HIG and HPT on the map mentioned above.

The cafeteria which Beat mentioned is at HPI. The cafeteria in HCI will be open.

How about meeting IN the cafeteria, in case of rain...

For those of you coming from Haubtbahnhof by public transport:
Take tram number 11 to Bucheggplatz, then change to bus number 69 to ETH Hönggerberg (be aware that the stop before it is called "Hönggerberg" - one more to go from there...).
You can also take tram 14 to Milchbuck and change to 69 bus there.

We'll clarify that with them on the day, but I'm sure they'd just appreciate being asked in advance of any commercial use.
Posted 45 months ago. (permalink)

view photostream

strobe2go says:

@Nick: any publication of either side (model / fotog) is fine as long as it is non-commercial.

Any use beyond that is not covered in the TfCD contract and needs to be approved by the other party.

I will bring a bunch of print outs of a generic TfCD contract on Sunday. The fotogs who wish to work with the models are requested to sign to others are free to work with their collegues as in previous meetings.

We will also to a collection to compensate the models for their travel expenses.

victor*f  Pro User  says:

For those who don't know, TfCD stands for "Time [in exchange] for CD", and is briefly explained here.

Due to the size of the event and its pseudo-commercial, semi-professional nature, does anyone know what policy ETH has towards photography on its property? Hopefully it's not like that of Sihlcity. It would be a pain in the @ss to drag all the gear somewhere else.

I don't think we should have a problem: this is a group of friends doing a workshop together and by no means a commercial shoot (even pseudo)! Eke suggested it: perhaps he knows whether they're likely to object? Are there security guard son site? If not, I can't imagine we'll have problems on a Sunday at a uni campus...
Posted 45 months ago. (permalink)

view photostream

ubiquity_zh  Pro User  says:

No, the last time I did a shooting there, I didn't see any security gards, not even at the construction sites (yes, we entered one...).
During the week, there are always students on the site who take photos for their classes, so it's quite a common sight.
If worst comes to worst, we can always shoot on the streets, or in the nearby forest or fields.
