About Sussex Bonfire Society Events

Many villages around Eastern Sussex and parts of Kent hold large bonfire parades and fireworks during the autumn months. Events are mainly in October and November but a few are now held at early as late September. This is partly to allow Bonfire Societies to visit each other's events.

The events are part of the UK national 'Bonfire Night' which celebrates the failure of the Gunpowder Plot to blow up Parliament and the death of Guy Fawkes.

But they also tap into a local tradition of celebrating the martyrdom of local Protestants during the reign of Queen Mary.

While some events continue to promote an anti-Catholic point of view others, such as Rye and Robertsbridge are much more family orientated. At Rye instead of burning a traditional effigy of Guy Fawkes a popular 'hate' figure such as the Crazy Frog of the ringtone fame or a seagull (a local pest) is chosen and then made in papier-mache and burned on the bonfire.

Towns and villages are fiercely independent and run their own events - Lewes had SIX separate events on the same night in 2011 - but there is also considerable co-operation and camaraderie between various groups extending to loans of equipment and personnel such as marshalls.
