I use a Canon 100mm-400mmL IS. I love the lens but I wish it would open up a bit wider ... it's an f/4.5 - 5.6 , not what I would call a fast lens.
But I do love it !!!!

I've only got a Canon 75-300mm f/4-5.6 (USM thank goodness, but not the greatest piece of glass :\) and would dearly love to upgrade to something along the lines of:
Sigma APO 80-400mm F4.5-5.6 EX OS
Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG MACRO HSM w/- 2xteleconverter

I was using the Canon 75-300, and got some pretty good shots out of it. BIt soft at full stretch though.
I got a Sigma 170-500mm, the F5-6.3 APO one. They do a more expensive, faster one too. Awesome lens, especially for the money - plenty fast enough for me, and it's very sharp.

I got a very inexpensive Nikon 70-300 G that is very slow but it is auto focus. I'm looking to replace it.
Most of the time I use a Nikkor 600 f4 MF. It is very fast and slow at the same time. Slow in focusing but that isn't really the lenses fault. The other thing is that the DOF is incredably narrow making it very hard to use at close range. I've got a whole lot of respect for the guys that used these 20 years ago with film. It must have been an expensive learning curve.
@Allen Rockwell- I've used the 100-400 and thought it was a great lens for the money.
@'ju:femaiz- I might go with a 70-200 2.8 with a TC. 400mm @ 5.6 isn't bad and 200mm at 2.8 is smoking
@localsurfer have you been using the 75-500 long? If not congrats on the new lens.

I'm a fan of the nikon 80-200 2.8. It's effectively longer with my d70 body ( 120-300) and real fast at 2.8. Ive contemplated using a TC but haven't made the leap. I hear with most bodies, you lose autofocus and not sure how many stops too.

canon 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS
not bad. love to hand hold surf shots. fairly light and compact. auto focus hunts a little some time, can be frustrating.
i'm wondering if anyone has ever used the canon 400mm 5.6L
it doesn't have IS (wish it did) nor the flexibility of a zoom but...
i hear it's great for birds in flight. seems it would be good for surf shots as well. any opinions on this lens?

I used a Beroflex 500mm f8 at the manual focus time, but that lens was a total crap (ok, ehat do you expect at a price of 50€...). Now I use the Sigma 100-300mm f4 (on my 'Nikon its makes a nice 150-450mm) and I'm pretty happy with it, allthough this thing is heavy ass! I like the fast autofocus and the HSM motor, but it some focus issues sometime.
I guess I will drop it in the near future and see if I can get the Nikon 80-400mm VR or a Nikon 70-200 plus 2x converter.

I use a Sigma 100-300mm f4 EX IF HSM on a Canon EOS Elan 7ne. It's an excellent lens for the price; sharp, relatively fast and well balanced. My only complaint is sometimes I wish I had a bit more reach. Has anyone used a Canon 400mm f/5.6? I've read several good reviews on it, but was wondering how it performed as a surf photography lens. I don't have the money for the big guns (400mm f/2.8 or 500mm f/4) so I'm looking for a less expensive option.

Started out with the Canon 100-400L IS....shelved it for the 70-200 2.8 IS.........shelved it for the 135 2.0 with a 1.4TC. Last summer I got a 1DMKIIN body (1.3 crop factor from 1.6 with the 20D) and went back to the 100-400 (using higher ISO and stopped WAY down). Finally, I got the 300 2.8 IS and shelved all others (as surf lenses, anyway!)

I started out with a nikon 70-300G which is a great lens in the right light, generally I shot at f7.1 or f8.0 and aimed for shutter speed above 1/800 to get sharp images.
For Sam 29
Now I use a 70-200VR f2.8 often with the 1.7TC. The keeper rate is certainly higher. However the when using the TC there is the dis-advantatge of loosing 2 stops of light, making the lowest stop f4.8 and although it's to be expected using a TC, I find that sometimes the images can be a little soft.

I know that the Canon 400mm f/5.6 has very good reviews. I saw incredible photos with that camera.

Sigma 50 - 500mm. Is a bit slow and soft at the 500mm range, but for shooting at 300 - 400 on a sunny day, you will get great shots. Very good value for money, but you must use a tripod, it can become a bit of a beast.

i agree with the bigma 50-500mm. its great at anything less than 500mm, so like 450mm, but you will need a monopod/tripod to keep it still. its a big lens with f4-5.6, and just shoot around f/8 and its a gorgeous lens.

Hi,

and then later down the line im looking into getting the sigma 1.4x teleconverter...
Is this a decent option for getting that little bit extra reach?
I dont have stacks of money and would like to get th best value for my money...
oes anyone have any sample shots with this teleconverter, or can point me in some way, so i can see what quality im getting...
Thanks!

19 months after my 1st comment. back then i was trying to decide which lens to buy. i decided on the canon 100-400mm IS L. turns out it was one of my best decisions ever. a great lens and very versitile. not only a good surf lens but good for so many other things. wildlife, portraits you name it it works. except low light. when the sun drops below the horizon you're lucky to get a shutter speed of 1/200 at ISO 800.
the push pull zoom on this is awesome too. the perfect lens to do hand held surf photography. no tripod or stick needed. it is a bit heavy though. i highly recommend this lens!!

My favourite is 500mm, though I have used 300mm F4 with teleconvertor (particularly on a crop camera) with good results too. It depends on your location & budget of course. I think 200mm is ok also with a crop camera if you're reasonably close to the action.

I use the Canon 70-200 f2.8 L-series with IS and I use it with a 2x extender, which allows me to shoot at relatively fast speeds at f5.6. It works really well, as I can also use the lens (without the extender) for portrait photography. The IS is of great value as it allows a lot more freedom of movement as I don't have to always use my tripod.
Update: I have since learnt that I do lose a lot of sharpness by using the extender. It's not an ideal solution. The 70-200mm f2.8 lens also looses a bit of sharpness if used wide open at f2.8. It seems to be better at f5.6. I am now considering buying the 400mm f5.6 but am concerned about the 5.6 limitation and to a lesser extent about the lack of IS and all-weather proofing.

Just got my new Canon L-series 400mm f5.6 and it is a huge improvement on the 70-200mm f2.8 with 2x extender. Significant improvement in image sharpness and also lighter to handle. Do have to use with a tripod or monopod. I also managed to swop my 2x extender for a 1.4x extender, so may well use the 1.4 extender with it but I will try my best not to. I would recommend this lens to anyone that is not prepared to fork out the money for a pro prime lens like the 400mm f2.8 or better.

"What are you favorite lenses to shoot surf with? From the beach or from the water?"
3rd option:
From the pier, no more than 100 feet away.
200 mm
(but at the length, be careful they don't spray you.)
Photos are not as flat, and action is stopped quite easily.

As you know, we get big surf that breaks a long way off around here. That's probably part of the disappointment.
It's "soft". With the 1.4 teleconv., it's a difficult focus. Still, for the price you can get shots. You just have a little work after the trigger.
