Maeda Suntour 1912 - 1994

Shikanosuke Maeda started making Suntour 8.8.8. freewheels in 1912.

Nobuo Ozaki, the head of product development at Maeda, invented the slant parallelogram rear derailleur in 1964 and Maeda obtained worldwide patents on the design. For the next 20 years, Suntour produced technically superior derailleurs. Suntour's slant parallelogram broke the image of Japanese components as being cheap copies of European components.

Suntour had good patent attorneys and they vigorously defended the slant parallelogram design. All of the major derailleur makers incorporated slant parallelograms once the patent expired in 1984.

Suntour peaked in 1985, when they offered the best combination of performance and value in conventional friction-shifting gear trains. By 1987, the market demanded indexed shifting. For the next three years, the performance of Suntour's AccuShift was about a year behind Shimano. Suntour's market share plummeted, and in the expensive yen enviroment, they ran out of time and resources to compete with Shimano.

In 1994, Suntour cut back to the products that they hoped they could sell. By the end of the year, Suntour was offering closeout prices on their medium and high-priced components. The Suntour factory in Osaka closed its doors.
