Promote Control - I caved! ...

Hi guy's,

I've been researching the Promote Control for quite a while now and have finally bitten the bullet and ordered one.

[Kerry first mentioned it here in March last year]

I initially looked at getting it from from Adorama or B&H but both places have no CN3 Control Shutter Cable's in stock and are unable to tell you when they'll will arrive.

[It can be used with the shutter cable but shots fire off a lot slower without it]

I decided just to got with promotesystems.com [the guy's who make the device]. Communication via email with them is very quick and they have the cables in stock.

It's expensive [just under $400 [edit: actually, it works out at AU$366 delivered from the states] but as always I've done a lot of research so feel confident it'll be worth it.

"Programmable Focus Stacking" - ooooh bugtastic. Are you going to hire it out for say $5 an hour???

In truth, I'll mainly be only using it for the "High Dynamic Range Mode" but the Focus Stacking looks interesting. In saying that, doing it manually isn't too hard.

Here's one my earlier attempts ...

"Auto-Blend Layers" Experiment

Thought I'd tryout Photoshop CS4's Auto-Blend Layers feature to extend depth of field.

I placed my Canon 40D + 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM lens on a tripod. The near end of the banana was approx 270mm from the front of the lens. The far end was 440mm away. The camera was set on AV and f/9.0 was dialed in. ISO was 100. The focal length was 45mm. I took 7 exposures using liveview focusing at different points along the banana.

The above image is a result of running the 7 exposures through the Auto-Blend Layers feature.

I was more than impressed with the outcome. Sharp from front to back!

Just remember, the DOF using f/9.0 @ 45mm with the lens 270mm away from a subject is around 10mm.

Oh yes ... It's just getting the chance though!

All I seem to be doing is exercising after work these days! A very unhealthy habit!

Just opened the box then. An extremely well built piece of kit with a very sturdy case. For the price though I wouldn't have expected any less!

Going to love this ...

A scenario in "HDR mode" ...

I've set "Mid Exposure" to 1/40. You get this reading from the camera when you meter for the scene.

I've decided to go in "0.3EV" steps. This can be changed to whatever you want.

I chose 24 exposures "cause I can" ;-)

So, I this scenerio I'll get 24 brackets @ 1/640, 1/500, 1/400, 1/320, 1/250, 1/200, 1/160, 1/125, 1/100, 1/80, 1/60, 1/50, 1/40, 1/30, 1/25, 1/20, 1/15, 1/13, 1/10, 1/8, 1/6, 1/5, 1/4, 1/3 after pressing one button.

A great feature that I didn't know about is that it gives you the "Seq:"
