Sultan Qaboos University, located in Muscat, Oman, is the only public university in the Sultanate of Oman. Named after Qaboos bin Said Aal Said the Sultan of Oman, the university opened in 1986. At the time, it comprised five colleges: Agriculture, Art and Islamic Studies and Science, Education, Engineering, and Medicine. With growth and reorganization it now has nine colleges: Agriculture, Art, Commerce and Economics, Education, Engineering, Law and Islamic studies, Medicine, Nursing, and Science.

Student enrollment has grown from 500 in 1986 to more than 10,000 in 2005. More than half of the students live off campus due to space constraints. Female students form about half of the total population.

هي جامعة عمانية حكومية تتمتع بالاستقلال "الإداري" والمالي عن الوزارات الحكومية المعنية بالتعليم العالي،تعتبر أول جامعة في سلطنة عمان، وبها تسع كليات ذات اختصاصات متنوعة في حين يعتبر خريجو الجامعة من روَاد سوق العمل في سلطنة عمان.

نافذة تاريخية

كان مشروع إنشاء جامعة السلطان قابوس وعدا من السلطان قابوس بن سعيد لأبناء شعبه في الاحتفالات بالعيد الوطني العاشر 1980م. وبدأت أعمال بناء الجامعة في عام 1982 واستقبلت الدفعة الأولى من طلابها عام1986م. وقد أصدر السلطان قابوس بن سعيد مرسوما سلطانيا رقم 9/86 بإنشائها وحدد هذا المرسوم بداية الدراسة في الجامعة في خمس كليات هي: كلية التربية وكلية الهندسة وكلية الطب والعلوم الصحية وكلية العلوم الزراعية والبحرية وكلية العلوم. وبعد ذلك تم إضافة كلية الآداب عام 1987م وكلية التجارة والاقتصاد عام 1993م وإلحاق كلية الحقوق عام 2006م وأخيراً إضافة كلية التمريض عام 2008م.
