Sustainable Drainage Systems (known as SuDS in the UK/EU, LID/BMPs in the USA and WSUD in Australia) offer an alternative approach to traditional piped drainage systems. SuDS employ a diverse range of techniques to effectively manage rainfall at source including swales, permeable paving, green roofs, detention/attenuation ponds, and constructed wetlands, all of which aim to detain runoff and release it slowly into watercourses or to ground. At their best, they will mange flood risk and water quality using techniques which are based on natural processes… and add amenity to developments.
