Dave!
Is it possible to extend the deadline to that Sunday. My friends restaurant is closed till the end of next week (this time of year a lot of restaurants close do to vacations). Also, I work the other job. I think most could use a Sunday deadline. What say yee?
I got the vehicle to do this but not enough time!

Since I won't be participating, I don't feel I'm shooting myself in the foot by sharing one tip I've picked up in food photography:
It doesn't take long for freshly cooked food to lose its luster at room temperature and look dry and flat in photos. Brushing the food with glycerin will keep it looking shiny, moist, and tantalizing!

re: Food and drink: Yes, that would be a natural pairing.
re: include humans: That is kinda getting away from the assignment. You are free to shoot it, of course. But that is not really a food shot, per se. See also: non "headshots" that were fantastic, but did not get consideration in the finals -- because they were not headshots...
re: Full week - Would love to, but Boot Camp will be pushing into fall as it is. Be creative. Restrictions can force that in a good way, sometimes.

Don't read on if you'd be offended by (legitimate) ponderings from someone who actually works in the food biz--because my thoughts will probably be totally different than how 99% of folks will approach this assignment.
my question is...
do folks here really read high end food mags? the current crop of Regular Joe food mags are allll about desaturated photos on plates in muted earth tones.
Bon Appetit, Saveur, and ESPECIALLY Cooks Illustrated are the Pop Photo of the food world. They're really just rags for shoemakers and the Joe and Glenda Yuppies of the world.
I'll be curious to see the results, if they are actually appetizing pix that people would use in a menu/website....
or pix shot in uber arsty style just because you have 5 SB900s and 6 softboxes....
btw, Micheal Hulstroms entry is the hotness IMO... but I'm not looking at the pix with casual diner (or even name-dropping restaurant whore) eyes. thats the only pic currently in the search that seems like the photographer has an above average concept about food. (no offense to the other entries)

anyone know how to easily replicate the sweat on a glass or can of liquid?
for example, you know when you take a beer bottle or can, or even a white wine bottle out of a fridge in the summer and its REALLY hot outside you get that nice moisture bead going on the surface?
Looking to replicate in a controlled environment (ie. my apartment) and am stumped at how to do it. I tried simply leaving it to warm on the counter but no dice.

@basegrinder: I think as the first STROBIST assignment was mostly about how you light a person no matter how beautiful or ugly the person is the second STROBIST assignment is not much different. If a cheap food is perfectly lit with some "meaning" it can beat uber-class restaurant food that is crappy lit, right?
I hope I understood you well.

Looking at the entries today and wodeing why some have links to 2 coins.
After re-reading the Strobist entry 5 times (I'm a bit dislexic) I eventualy found the bit about 2 coins

I don't know if anyone noticed any issues with the Flickr search, my assignment picture seems to be going in and out of the search.
I did tag it appropriately! I was alerted about this after Wink could not find my picture, although I could see it, now sometime it shows and other times it does not.

And mdl01 My post wasn't showing, but I think I figured why... I'd copied/pasted the tag from the website, but my PC had copied "sbc2assign2 " (Note the space at the end). The search David put above searches for "sbc2assign2", no space. If I searched with the space, it appeared. So, delete your tag, and add it again ensuring that you definitely don't have any spaces. mdl01 I suspect when you say it went in and out of the search that you were sometimes following the search link, and other times were pasting in the tag in your own search? (I was, which is what threw me at first, 'cos I could see it in my own search...)
hope that helps someone. (though I hope it doesn't help anyone with a better shot than mine, otherwise I may have ruled myself out! ;-) Meh, who am I kiddin - don't think I'm in with much chance anyway - good luck to all!)

Can you accept links to shots here if we can't get the tags working? www.flickr.com/photos/nosamluap/3695751732/
Oddly, when it does appear, it's always in the same place - between "Medium rear" by Andriy Z and "Chocolate con Churros" by a.castell

I found a great incentive for getting the shot done. I chose Smarties (English version of M&Ms) and share my living space with a chocoholic. It was either get the shot done or spend more money on a replacement subject.

@ NosamLuap
I experienced also some kind of appear/disappear. I put it in saturday, and it was present in the result search. But monday morning it wasn't there anymore. But I could not see it in my account neither. Than it appeared again on monday evening, in the same position in result list. And now, tuesday morning, I can't see it anymore again.
Well, as this is first time I use Flickr to put a photo on web, I think I probably did something wrong. But if more experienced users have same problem...

Sorry if this has been covered before. I tried searching through this thread but I grew impatient after 15 minutes of reading.
Question regarding adding text to our submissions; is it allowed?
I have a great slogan I'd love to include in my photo that would give it the look i'm going for but dont want to step on any toes.
I did more of a product shot of food, and wanted to do a slight twist on the products usual slogan to make it fit my photo.

So who has had the guts to do the optional part of the assignment and negotiated the shoot in a real restaurant. Looking at most of the entries so far, it looks like home cooking has been almost everyone's option.
I tried the "put yourself up for some major embarrassment" option yesterday and had great fun (between the nerves) doing it.

@ All - One submission per person. This ain't a sweepstakes. If you reshoot, pull your old frame out.
re: Adding Text- Legal, but very risky.
re: The coin: Everyone should shoot it -- it is to verify your pic was not pre-existing. Only the winner needs to produce it, of course. Unless you win, it does not need to be submitted anywhere. PLEASE do not clutter up the submissions by tagging it in. KThxBai!

I have noticed several have posted their images with an AdobeRGB colour space. You probably don't want to do that because anyone viewing them with Windows Internet Explorer, older versions of Firefox, Opera and a few others will not see the images as you intended. Instead they will see a washed out desaturated version.
For best results you need to convert your images to sRGB before uploading to flickr.
