The assignment only lasts a few minutes. (David types pretty quick.)
It's the thinking about the assignments, and shooting the assignments, and getting the results that takes a week or more.
:-)
Now, if I can get all the other projects done before the time the first assignment is due, I'll be happy. (Surprised, but happy.)
The last blog post is at 12am on Monday, which means the first assignment will be posted no earlier than 12am on Tuesday (since that's when today would be tomorrow.) But it could wait until 8am or later just for the torture factor.

The name of this thread needs to be changed to

Us Newbs are already looking forward to jumping into the deep end of the Flickr Strobist Pool and now we have the big guys mocking us from their lounge chairs before we even know which dive we are expected to perform.
...and this thread is already so long with crazy that it will take forever to find the questions and the help. So I got a quote for you from a movie of my own choosing...

I plan on participating in the Boot 2. I officially disqualify my self from the prize!
I do not want a prize as I have enough mods!. I would like to have someone that needs the mods win because they show the right stuff.
I like to think of the Boot camp as a practicing method like doing licks on a piano or guitar or drums.... always honing your skills.
I hope some of you vets help in giving some examples as well as good advice as David asks.

Hey, just an idea I would like to run by everyone here.
Once we're over with Strobist Bootcamp II we aughtta put a sqaud picture together . For example, we get a military like background, send it to each other and Photoshop ourselves into the photo. something worth doing for the accomplishment and the memories.

Right..... I had to get up at ten o'clock at night, half an hour before I went to bed, drink a cup of sulphuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down' t mill and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our mother and father would kill us and dance on our graves singing Halleluja.
Aye......and you try telling the young people of today that. And they won't believe you !

Probably should have asked this ages ago, and I feel embarrassed for having to ask and admit these things, haha. Well, here it goes.
What are the limits of something being strobist? Yeah, I know it has to have off-camera flash, but, *gulp* I don't have an off-camera flash. I have a SB-400, a reflector, two hot-lamps, and no cash (zip, zero, nada. I'm eating my shoes here people.) Does it still count as "off-camera" if I were to bounce my SB-400 off a reflector like so: [link]? Would using a reflector to work the sun be ok, like so: [link]? And would I be murdered for using hot lamps, like so: [link]? I'm still going to participate, but I'd like to know that I can submit and be counted legit in all this.

So I posted my entry, meticulously following the rules, to the pool using the appropriate tags. My shot appeared for a few minutes and is now gone (yet it's still in the main Strobist pool). The FAQ's say you need 5 uploads before photos appear. Does this mean 5 photos contributed to the group pool or 5 uploads to my account? Thanks for any help you can provide....

If your shot is still in the Strobist pool, I can only assume that lots of people added to the pool after you. So it's on page 2 or 3 or 4 or 97. Happens. Lots. Oh well. (Edit- as of 2 PM, it was on page 1 three rows down).
If you are new to Flickr, you generally need to have 5 public shots in your stream so that Flickr will review your stream and determine if it is 'safe' (not NSFW). No hard and fast rule though - sometimes more, sometimes less.

David, thanks again for the bone to chew on.
You mentioned this will be the only exercise this time with a live model. I'm gonna ask you to reconsider -- for many of us, live model exercises offer better practice and less boring photos later. I know, it's educational to take photos of oranges, kids dolls, reflective drinking glasses, and basketballs. But without something live in the photo, nobody wants to look at the pic....

Is it permissible to make an overall exposure adjustment to the raw image? I don't have an electronic flash meter so I use the DH-01 manual metering method (aka shoot hand, chimp, shoot again). It gets pretty close on the camera LCD but almost impossible to nail the exact overall exposure level for the final image without tweaking it a bit in post process. I've already submitted my shot but would like to replace it with one that has an exposure correction applied if that is within the rules.

HI. I've actually never uploaded any pics before. I read the info that DH said. I think I was able to get it out in the general stream of things, but have no idea how to get it into the strobist pool. Supposedly there was supposed to be an option for it when I was getting the image ready, but I did not see it. Yes, I have an account or whatever you call it, and I joined the Strobist pool already. Help!

- Perhaps on a typical scene with a fairly well distributed range of of dark-to-light tones. Even then though, I usually find it necessary to adjust exposure and.or contrast in the raw image, even if just by a minute amount, to transpose a technically "correct" exposure to a final image that is aesthetically what I'm looking for.
And in the case of my Boot Camp image, the tonal range of the image is not typical. The overall tonal range is predominantly toward the left side of the histogram, with only the skin tones and a few other small highlight areas contributing to the higher tones. So the histogram is very short on the right side.
As a general rule, I find the histogram on the camera to be a decent rough-order-estimate of the exposure, but I'd say I almost always have to make some minor adjustments in the raw image to get the final image I want.
