and Maybe you should just follow the rules of the group. It doesn't ask for strobist info in the picture, but in the description.

wow, clearly i'm getting 10× the sarcasm ;)
also, I was recently featured on the flickr blog for these setup photos. yes, it's extra work — and the main group they are intended for, is this strobist group.
and FYI, there are links to each of these photos in the description... which clearly tells me more than a couple people aren't reading the descriptions properly.

Sounds lame to me Dustin. You ARE following the rules and then some. I see photos all the time that are in the pool with NO strobist info at all.

Hi Harry,
Thanks dude. 'preciate the useful feedback and non-sarcasm :)
Indeed there are quite a few that come through and I can imagine it's hard for the administrators to keep track of them all.
I was just mainly concerned from when I'm actually posting info, and then they get removed.
cheers,
Dustin

wow, nice stuff i love set up photos. I guess for the ones you load into the pool , just make sure the strobist info is in the drscriptions area. if the bot is working on it, they wont see the image and know info is there. It would be a shame to not see all the useful stuff. nice stream.

Your work is awesome Dustin, and yor info is spot on! You actually help the strobist dummies like me to understand how you are shooting more than anyone else around here!

Hey Dustin,
Sorry, but I think I removed one this morning and later saw that you had a photo link to your set-up, please repost. Sometimes when things come through the Robomod, it isn't clear that there is a link to an alternative set-up photo and with so many, it's easy to miss.

Thanks a ton for your support. It's easy to moan and groan on the internet... and as we all know it gets us nowhere quickly. I'll continue to post to the group..
Steve, totally understand. I have no idea how the moderation queue works, but you guys I'm sure are clearly busy and have thus been doing a pretty good job.
Again, thanks all, this is still a fantastic group.

Dustin Diaz Like I said in our fmail - your stuff rocks. You're really good but I'd like to see the simple strobist description and a shot of your setup in the description would be icing on the cake. It's just bad form to chase links when you go to the work you do to create the setup to not just post them and and it's not to take away from your ability as a photographer cause you're good. really good. sorry if I was being an ass.

So do I understand this correctly? Because Dustin has nice photos and he posts a link to the strobist info, he does not have to follow the rules?
I didn't think posting a link was acceptable, it certainly is not to me, I don't have time to click through every link to see the strobist info!
If the rules go for all the should go for Dustin as well.
Sorry Dustin, nothing personal, you are a great photographer, however, that does not relieve you from your responsibility of posting the Strobist info in the description of the picture, your link surely is a great addition, thanks!
Steve i do respect your say, but I would like to hear why Dustin is excluded from the rules which apply to everone else?

Yeah, considering that this web site was designed on the basis of helping people by spreading useful information, it's ridiculous that so many people post images to the pool that do very little to teach anyone anything.

@AlfredK: With all due respect, you have to be joking, right? Links to setup shots have always, as long as I've been reading this group, been de facto acceptable here. Particularly given that they're linked, as they should be, in the caption, and provide (by their nature) 10x the typical strobist info that is the norm around here.
Am I to take you seriously when you say you "don't have time" to take the millisecond it takes to click one prominent link, which takes you in this case to a very thoughtful and complete strobist info shot?

Don't knock on my door! I'm not the one who wrote the rules.
"2. Include lighting details starting with the number of flashes and how they were triggered - preferably in the Caption, but using a comment line is OK too. The idea of this Pool is to share pictures taken with off-camera flash, and the details of how (the more detail the better.) Hey, we wanna learn from you..."
I don't see anything mentioned about linking to another picture as acceptable?
I'm fine with whatever you guy's decide, but the rules have to apply to everyone, don't they?
And by the way, didn't we just go trough this about two weeks ago?

Dustin, while I think what you're doing is fine, you should just send a pm to one of the moderators instead of whining about it in a public thread.

Alfred, I'm doing my best not to be too rigid. If someone posts a link to a picture with all of the set-up info, it's fine with me. When it gets down to it, the information has been provided, it's in the picture description and is clear. The only things that bother me is when info is posted only in the tags or in notes on the image.

Probably helps to explain the moderation process a bit: we look through photos (and probably not all of them either) and if there's no info, we take it out. We don't spend time looking for the accompanying set up shot, there's just not enough time in the day.
I think we all appreciate Dustin's efforts, but as said before, please don't misconstrue our methods as being in any way unforgiving. Perhaps if you added a link to your setup photo, that would cue the reviewer that there is indeed a setup link.
As always, what we have here is a failure to communicate.
Cheers,
fnb

i know this isn't the most constructive thing that could be said but: it's frustrating to see someone getting so worked up over something so trivial. my take on it is this, it's great that you want to be helpful and provide the pictures, and it's great that you go above and beyond. if you have an issue it should be resolved by you and moderators not in public for the world to see - that is poor form my friend. secondly if they disagree and don't decide to go your way just move on, i think this is amounting to far too much effort on your part to make a case and you could just give up on your 10x the work and put that energy into something someone else appreciates if it is not getting you the attention which you seem to be craving here. i hate to say it but this selfish plea for attention doesn't appear to aid your cause instead i think it makes you look bad because you're handling the situation in a childish temper tantrum sort of way.

No, I think he made it int he FlickrBlog before this thread, so that would give him the right to throw a tantrum right? After all, Flickr thinks he's very helpful, why shouldn't he feel that he's obligated to share what he has with everyone who might not have had the opportunity to learn from him due to some miscommunication that resulted in his photos being removed from some group. And I was never good with runon's that made absolutely no sense.

That's an interesting PoV. I certainly added Dustin as a Contact as a result of this thread, and it would be interesting to know how many more people did the same.
BTW Rules are OK if used as a means to an end, but there seems to be an ass or two who think the rules are an end in themselves.

As long as he is posting his setup, i dont think his images should be deleted from the group.

I'm not sure if your comment about an ass or two who think that the rules are written in stone pertains to me, I would like to explain something to you and everyone else.
A few weeks ago we were asked to help the moderators by tagging images without strobist info and NSFW and were provided a tool to do so. I don't care if Dustin's or anyone else's pictures get removed or stay in the pool, I only did was I was asked to do and thought I was doing the right thing! Well I guess I was wrong!
There where many pictures which I tagged and hoped that they would not get removed because some of them were better then Dustin's images, but my point was that if you tag one you have to tag them all.
Since it seams to difficult for the moderators to establish a clear standard by which we tag and remove images, I will no longer be tagging any of them.
So thanks for anyone who is pissing at me for doing what the moderators have asked us to do!

Dustin, my recommendation is that for now you post your strobist info in the traditional sense and if you want to provide a link to a set up picture, all the better.
I will get feedback from my fellow mods and we'll clarify the rule.
Alfred, I've appreciated your help. I don't want to be wishy-washy on the rules but until every circumstance pops up and is discussed, we're all just trying to use our best judgment.
Thanks.

Letter of the law vs. Intent of the law
If I'm not mistaken, the intent of the group is share lighting informaiton, thereby increasing our knowledge, understanding, and abilities when using off-camera flash. Dustin has provided top-quality lighting information (more than most posts) and he provides a learning opportunity for those who care to look. If you don't feel like clicking on his setup link...don't view his quality work.
I fail to see how such a legalistic view of the group rules benefits the group.
