It doesn't matter what they look like, or even if the build quality is fantastic... do they bloody fire when they are supposed to, would be my question??
My v2's drove me to screaming point, and have now gone to the great land of eBay - been replaced with 100% reliable Skyports... :)

My V2s fired reliably for about half a year or so - until I had to start replacing batteries from time to time. After that it became a gamble, especially when using 2-3 flashes. Completely unacceptable for working with people in front of your lens.
For me the best thing about the new version is that they use cheap batteries!

My Cactus V2 has worked for me just fine from the moment I got them, not a single problem, not one ever missfired, working smooth and reliably everytime. So I guess, I got lucky like tby_v said, though maybe I haven't tested them on a more challenging situation than my home-studio shots, where trigger and receiver where at most 20 ft apart and, of course, no interference with other wireless systems.
Anyhow, it's always good to keep up on info about new gear, so it would be good if someone who already tested this V4 could review their performance.

Well, once I added an antenna to my V2 transmitter I had perfect performance 100% of the time, no misfires, huge range, etc. But their quality control is loose, so those of you who have had horrible experiences just got unlucky. I have had a total of 10 v2 receivers, and 3 of them were complete crap, didn't work 80% of the time. The other 7 work 99% of the time.
Anyway, these are a HUGE improvement on all fronts. The build quality is much better, there are no weak points, no easy wires to break, no crammed in mishapen sync ports. The properly sized built in antenna on the transmitter gives these very reliable performance and range. I have only tested up to 50 feet so far, but the documentation reports a 100 meter range. In all of my tests so far, no misfires, no random popping, etc. These are not pocket wizard replacements, but they are a huge step up in overall form and function.
@Metodico- These are photos I took of my very own V4 kit, which I have tested, and reveiwed. The results of my review are posted beneath the various photos above.

While mechanically these seem better the electronic circuit is the same. I would expect in time there will be a similar percentage of people that will not be happy with these. These are toys not tools. But I'm happy enough with my toys.

I've not had a problem with the electronics, so if it is the same electronics, that doesn't bother me. I think the biggest issue is with the cheap PC port and that they use bare, uninsulated wire to go from PCB to PC port to hotshoe. I had one of my receivers start misfiring on me. It turns out the PC port bulkhead nut on the inside of the box had come loose and slid onto one of those uninsulated wires. In most orientations, it would short the other wire and constantly fire the flash. It took a few minutes to figure out, but the fix was easy.
Could you post some pictures of the inside of those things? Did they say what they would retail for? Do both RX and TX units run on AA/AAA batteries?

scubajunkie: You can find inside photos of them both from my review at http://akikorhonen.org/articles.php?action=view&id=667
It would have been much better to keep the discussion on one thread as then all the information could be found easily.

Josh Sommers :
Problem is not "long distance". My concern is the misfiring if you put several receivers together for example one as hear light and one as rim light....I had already a sb28 blown out by constant misfiring of the cactus triggers.
Could you do some testing for me?
To put the receivers close together and see what happens?
Thanks in advance
Kind regards

I don't think there was ever a problem with the circuit other than the 12V limit for trigger, or the lower trigger voltage of some flash. Or the poor internal antenna, their biggest problem was one of design.
My interest is because of my studio strobes eat the cactus V2s receivers. The new ones are good for 200V.

I loved my V2s—all 8 of them. Never had a problem (except when my camera was within inches of the receiver). I did upgrade though, buying into Nikons CLS, which I am extremely happy with and supplement my SU-800 with several RadioPoppers. I am comfortable where I am, but may consider the new V4s to fire my ABs.

Oh...hello to everyone. I'm a newbie here and I've really enjoyed reading some of the post on this site. Everyone seems to have great information to share and as a new person to photography I'm soaking it all in.
looks like they did what everyone has been doing with the V2s. Added the antenna so now consumers don't have to. I don't have any experience with these triggers and I went with Cybersyncs mainly because of the amount of complaints people here and other site were reporting about them. motleypixel on youtube does a great review and test of the V2s and will probably give some of you that have no problems with the V2s a better understanding why some people get so frustrated. (Its a 4 part video review: www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5hTyVLYNZg ). He also does the mod on them as well and does the test again. Looks like to me it probably has a lot to do with where you are and what you have around you...don't know though just guessing.

They look like they could be more stable.
I did notice that the battery end terminals in the receiver are welded to close to each other. This would cause the battery end to not be able to touch the terminal so it wouldn't fire. I fixed it just by bending the tab enough that it allowed the battery to stay in one place and also make contact. Anyone else notice this? This was causing me headaches until i took some time to figure out the cause.
Another issue I have found is using the receiver with my 430ex2. The damn thing likes to fire on the second trigger all the time. Also would not fire consistently. What I think I've concluded to be the problem is the contact point on my flash head doesn't touch the contact point on the receiver well enough. When i hold the flash tight to the hot shoe it fires every time, but if its not tight enough or wiggled on the right way the symptoms come back. Anyone else have this issue? My Vivitar 285hv's work every time with the V2's. This just happens with my 430ex.
Another work around I did is regarding the strength of the receiver to hold the flash stable enough. I just got some Velcro and the PC sync cables for the 285's and attached them to the side of the flash. Now my whole flash stand doesn't look like a leaning tower of stuff ready to fall over. It has helped with the stability.

Why would you want to mod it? If you want a fleabay trigger with a big antenna just buy the YN-16 from Dealextreme. I use it and it is great. Any version will do if all you want is a trigger for your strobe, and under $30 including shipping.
It has never failed me and has a good range, because it has an extendible antenna in the transmitter.
From the email quoted above we can expect a shipped cost of just under $50 for the V4.

The V2 and V2s were *not* compatible. They have very little interoperability between old/new parts. That's why it's easier to just get a full set at once so you don't get stuck w/ not being able to fine a replacement if one breaks...

P.S. I don't think they will work with my 550EX due to "specific pins" ...
My parade has been offically rained on...
Now what should I order the v2's
Here is my set up
Canon XSI
2 550EX Speedlites
Can someone list the items I need. Much appreciated...!
Here are the notes from the Gadget Inifinity Site:
Notes on compatibility:
Cactus V4 does not transmit TTL information.
Some dedicated flashes (e.g. Nissin Di-622 and Di-466, Sunpak PZ42x and PZ30, Sigma EF-530/500 DG ST for Canon, etc.) are triggered via system-specific pins instead of the central contact of the hot shoe.
Cactus V4 does not work with these flash models. To check whether your dedicated flash units are compatible with Cactus V4, try attaching them to a camera of other brand (e.g. attaching a Nikon TTL flash to a Canon DSLR camera).
If the flash can be triggered, it will work with Cactus V4.
Tested with the following flash models:
Cactus KF36;
Canon SpeedLite 580EX II, 580EX, 540EZ, 520EZ, 430EX, 430EZ, 420EX, 420EZ, 380EX;
Nikon SpeedLite SB-900, SB-800, SB-600, SB-28, SB-27, SB-26, SB-25, SB-24;
Olympus FL-50R, FL-50, FL-36R, FL-36;
Pentax AF-540 FGZ, AF-360 FGZ, AF-400 FT, AF-240 FT;
Sigma EF-530 DG Super, EF-530 DG ST (for Nikon only), EF-500 DG Super, EF-500 DG ST (for Nikon only), EF-430;
Sunpak Auto 2000DZ, 622 Pro, 433AF, 433D, 383, 355AF, 344D, 333D;
Vivitar 285HV, 285, 283, DF-400MZ, DF-340MZ;

Was going to get cybersyncs but just ordered the V4s. 1 transmitter a 3 receivers for $87.00 plus $10.00 shipping. I never had a problem with my V2s but I wanted a 3rd receiver. If they are reliable within a 50 ft range I'll be a happy camper. The $180 I saved over the cost of cybersyncs can go toward the next toy.

scott: it should work fine w/ a 550ex...it just shorts out the center pin to fire the flash. Some canon flashes put out craploads of RF interference so the range of these gets messed up (canon flashes even mess up pocketwizards' range).
Bryan: try taking the plastic wrap off the batteries and try the receiver w/o the door on to make sure the contact isn't being pushed apart...these are all known problems if you read the V2s threads ;-)

These work fine with my 430ex, whereas the v2 NEVER worked with my 430ex, so I would assume that they probably do work fine with the 580ex too. I was told that they completely rewrote the onboard software for these, which is the main reason why they are incompatible with the V2 receivers, but also the main reason why they play so much nicer with flashes that the v2s did not play with at all.

I can see the Nano has a 5/8" stud with 1/4-20" threaded tip and I can see a threaded hole on the bottom of the receiver of the V4 but I can find any dimensions for it? Are these a standard size?

I myself hope reliability is good with these but those who purchase them need to understand that they aren't studio quality and you have to work with the issues that they have. What do they say " you get what you pay for"... Since time is of no concern for me I can take extra time to test these out. If they are reliable within the standards that I need at this point then I'm going to use them. If not i'm going to buy pocket wizards. I don't expect to take these on a wedding shoot but for my home studio stock photography they may be an option to cables. If their reliable then I may try them out in the studio but I'd never expect to shoot a $1500 wedding or high end client with these.
A good photographer can do good work with the tools he has avaliable. A Professional photographer is one who knows that the tools he has just wont work. Ok maybe an overstatement here but you get what i'm saying. Dont cry about spending $40 bucks on a $200 product. You wouldn't expect to shoot a magazine cover with your kids Dora wanabe camera now would you?
