Golf bags for light stands?

view profile

Gerard Maas says:

I remember reading about this photographer who cleverly noticed at the airport how golfers were smoothly allowed with their bags while he was harassed about the pack of light stands he was taking along. He bought a golfer bag and never had a trouble again.
That was long time ago.

Recently I was in the sports store killing some waiting time, and started looking at the golf bags remembering the anecdote above.

They look very practical. I could imagine using the side pockets (designed to hold ball packs) to fit my flashes and stuff and the feet stand support would be oh-so-great in those places where you'd rather not open your bag on the ground.

Yet, the target use of the bag of putting your light stands inside doesn't look straightforward. The bags I saw had hard divisions for the golf clubs. They look quite small to fit a light stand, me thinks.

Is somebody using a golfer bag for strobist gear? Mind sharing your experience?

-kr, Gerard (whos Manfrotto lightstand bag became to small to carry all that stuff around)

i havent shifted to using golf bags...yet. but youre quite right, golfers get a free pass on such equipment while i have nightmares about trying to explain my studio strobes.

maybe a golf bag would hold everything BUT the lights, its not perfect, but quite a bit closer then before. i'd try it

Im thinking about the same thing.
I bought a light stand bag from tamrac, its ok but not ideal.
I think the golf bag could be a good idea, i think the side pockets would work nice for clamps and grip and maybe even strobes if they were padded enough.

is that anything like jumpers for goalposts?

they are not particularly cheap though are they (golf bags)? I guess it depends how much kit you have - I find that a camera bag is ok for all my main kit with a tripod bag containing stands/clamps etc..

Two words: Car Boot

You can pick them up for pennies, they are normally a bit battered but it adds to the authenticity!

Isn't a "boot" the same as what we yanks call a trunk?
Have I had it wrong all these years?

There's a short list of words that we use differently, I thought I had a decent grasp of it...

Fag
Fanny
Pissed
Pants
Cheers
Boot
Etc.

Oh, and as a southerner, the use of "biscuit" to refer to a cookie is completely unacceptable. A biscuit is a carrier for gravy, or stuffed with fattening breakfast foods, and that's all there is to it.

I'm prepared to resort to violence to defend the correct usage of the word. I'm even more prepared to forget about it and stop hijacking this thread with this nonsense :-)

Now, that's a throw back to some medieval roots.

I do not have a photo of it but for the last 3 years I have been using a golf bag travel cover bag. The golf clubs fit inside it for travel.
Mine is soft sided and fits 6 stands with casters and numerous umbrellas, softboxes, has roomy pockets for cords and accessories and is on big roller wheels with a skidplate. Carry handle and shoulder strap included.
Cost $30.00 at K-mart. They are available at any sports store also.

This isn't my model but will give you an idea. A hard case model is also available. Never had a problem at the airport with it.

I've been using this, just because I picked up a used one for a good price...

It has wheels on one end, for one-handed transport.
I doubt it would be very airport-friendly, though.
And it's a bit overkill for light stands.
I like the golf bag idea.

Car Boot Sale

We don't have yard sales in the UK (much, it rains too much, and neighbors never talk to each other anyway).

But, we have the localized equivalent of eBay every weekend. Loads of folk pile their unwanted stuff into their cars (the boot is indeed the trunk), drive to the site (often a soccer pitch or field), set up a table and the buyers turn up and buy. Cheaply. Assuming it isn't raining.

Probably a whole bunch of stolen gear there too. Just like eBay.

And that list of words:

Fag ... cigarette, but more likely referring to a gay male.
Fanny ... a part of the female anatomy we don't refer to on this group.
Pissed ... so drunk you can't stand up.

2 great nations divided by a common language.

If it's served as breakfast, yes.
For other meals, it's the brown gelatinous stuff with bits of beef-like meat.
Either way, it gets delivered via a biscuit, the one exception being when it's served as a topping on mashed potatoes.
It's best when served within reach of a defibrillator.

Oh, a boot SALE, I get it now.

We have those, too, in places, as well as yard/garage/attic/estate sales.

My grandmother calls it "trade day."
As in: "I'm going down to trade day to see if anybody's got anything good."

I recently heard a guy speaking of visiting the UK, and openly referring to his new fanny pack and his vintage acid washed pants. After a few giggles he cornered someone to get the skinny. Fanny = va jay jay and pants = panties.

The golf bag is a great idea. I have a spare that I am about to put into service. Easier way to carry several stands. Plus there are cases for the golf bag for air travel. Sure way to avoid attracting attention.

I got a hard golf bag case for free! A co-worker was throwing it out because it had t broken latches--otherwise it was perfect. This is the type of case people put their golf bags in for travel.

It is rigid plastic, it is lightweight and durable. It is also plenty long and I use it for my big light stands and long sogtbox--my backdrop stand bag even fits in there.

Best part is, it has wheels, so I can roll it on location no problem.

I use two types of bags for my lighting stands that I have picked up. First is a baseball bat bag, its long, has some pockets for other things and doesn't say camera stuff. The second is a skateboard bag, looks like a tallish backpack, lots of pockets for stuff. Got it at a yardsale for $2.

I've been using a nylon guitar bag. It's heavy duty, fits my longest stands easily and has lots of other compartments. I can fit all my strobist gear plus an AB800 as well. Plus it has comfortable shoulder straps. It was $40. Mine looks something like this one:
