Light Modifier Cage Match Results - Test 2 (SOFTNESS w/ no ceiling)

This is the 2ed set of test from the following topic
www.flickr.com/groups/strobist/discuss/72157606355053030/...

Let me preface this by saying that there are no one size fits all solutions here. This test only addresses softness in a situation with no ceiling. Softness has a direct correlation to the size of the light source and way it is restricted. With no ceiling or wall to bounce off of, the winners will always be the ones with the most surface area and least directed light. I didn't shoot the Lumiquest 80/20 since this is the arena that the Big Bounce shines in, but I would guess it falls just behind the Fong and Demb (which were neck and neck) due to the surface being roughly the same size and the light is more contained on the sides. The next test will measure light loss which is an important aspect missing from this test.

I shot off camera and on camera and I couldn't tell you why 3ed and 4th place holders switched places between these 2 scenarios. It may be user error or my personal interpretation of the results due to the fact that they were so close.

I would have liked to use an actual model but couldn't find someone that could sit still long enough. The mannequin surface will read differently than real skin. I also don't have access to a studio with extra tall ceilings, so I shot outside in dark shade but reduced ambient by shooting at a low iso and fast shutter speed.

SOFTNESS (no ceiling) CATEGORY ON CAMERA:
1st- Milk Jug
2nd- Big Bounce
3ed- Fong
4th- Demb

SOFTNESS (no ceiling) CATEGORY OFF CAMERA:
1st- Milk Jug
2nd- Big Bounce
3ed- Demb
4th- Fong

Haha, this is one part of the DIY ethic I do get a little elitist in. Dude, just get the fong. It's not like we're talking expensive light modifiers like beauty dishes and softboxes here.

I have no problem breaking out a speedlight in front of a client, but I'm not busting out a milk jug :)

fong is over priced and is no better than a stofen when people use flash correctly plus you don't look rediculus with a stofen

@rtpoah: are you referring to the Stofen Omnibounce? (Not aware they make other products?)

The Omnibounce doesn't actually change the size of the light-source, however 'correctly' you use a flash. The only thing that changes shadow softness is changing the size of the light source. The omnibounce is useful for bouncing light off reflective surfaces, as the name suggests - it's a light direction modifier, not a size modifier, it's not designed to make shadows softer.

Its funny because I have fallen in love with my milk jug. and did take it out in front of models this weekend. its great at the beach, kinda protects the flash if it falls , and doesnt catch the wind like umrella. Ill post examples in my stream later.

The Fong isn't much bigger than the Sto-fen, not in comparison to a person's head anyway. The Fing works by spreading light all around, and hopefully bouncing it off of walls and ceilings for that large light source, and it sends a little light down onto the subject. I think its shape trumps the Sto-Fen for indoor, on-camera light modification. Still, I won't pay $50 for one.

I like www.abetterbouncecard.com as it is roughly the same idea.

Then again I like the Sto-Fen with the flash at 45 degrees. This to works a lot like the Fong sending light all around, and a little down toward your subject.

But then again I like the milk jug--I need more milk jug! (said in my best Christopher Walkin impersonation...)
