off top of head...the guide number goes back and forth and supposedly it is more powerful but only by a bit. It can recgonize when its own gels are inserted and will transmit WB info appropriately to the camera, and it does head zooming based on DX if that's how you're shooting. So a 30mm lens will show up as 50mm on the head zoom, rather than 28mm.

Don't forget the auto color balance recognition is for the next generation cameras ONLY -D3 & D700! Not even the D300!
If you use CLS the manual switch will be nice.

eh. that's tiny next to my Vivitar. It's like 1.5 times the size of my camera body and weighs about twice as much. You darn kids with your new-fangled flashes. In my day, we had to fetch the light from the Sun and bring it back in buckets!

Nikon seems to use the same "chassis" for their flashes. If you notice, the SB-28, SB-80DX and the SB-800 are all about the same (roughly).
This guy looks to be about the same as the SB-24, SB-25 and SB-26.
If worse came to worse it could be used as a defensive blunt object.

Ryan,
I'll bet you cheated. You probably just put some "Make my logo bigger cream" on your strobe didn't you?

Am I alone in thinking that the '800 has a more "streamlined" look?

Streamlined? I'ts the Tatra T77 of flashes.

It probably makes your camera faster, too. A must-have for all PJs out there.

The biggest improvement that the SB-900 has over the SB-800, is that the SB-900 now rotates 180' to either side, instead of stopping short at 90' to one of the sides.
This is makes an incredible difference in how you can bounce flash.
For that alone, the SB-900 should be an immediate upgrade for owners of the SB-800.

...at least for those owners who regularly bounce the flash.
Did anyone find a "Strobist relevant" upgrade in the flash?
Is it confirmed that it still has a slave mode?

neil,
comparing the two rotation mechanisms in my head, i dont see an incredible difference, but it's true one will get those few extra angles if they want to bounce the flash behind and over their right shoulder.
anyway, nikon, just like all successful companies, knows it is compelled to come out with "newer, better" models from time to time so as to keep their profit margins up. i mean no R&D went into this thing and they get to charge big for it as the "top of the line." perhaps more realistically however this flash, like many new items, is the "bottom of the bang for your buck line."

the 180 to both sides would be a great difference... I've always been thinking why don't they do that on all flashes... I mean, it wouldn't cost anything.
think of portrait oriented pictures, camera tilted down, flash bounced off ceiling... I have to hold the camera upside down to do that... especially with wideangle.
the price and size are big drawbacks, though.

Hey, does it have a button that makes it sudddenly get bigger like that, or is it automatic? For $500, I'll keep using my SB-800 and use the money to buy another monolight.

Can all the "modern" nikon flashes be used as slaves? (SB-600,SB-800 and the SB-900)
Be triggered by an other flash I mean, ie. my SB-28 with skyport fires a SB-600? (not via CLS)

This will be an instant hit for the paps shooting a red carpet. You can now use a 70-200mm lens with your strobe. I'm not a numbers guru, so I can't tell if they jacked up the output or of it's getting it done with better optics/reflector.
Having a mode button saves from trying to remember how to get to the mode menu.
I probably won't buy one. My 800s do what I need, and I have a Fong and a beauty dish that I don't want to lose function.

i wonder how much of a difference it would make say if you wanted to bounce it off a ceiling/wall that was alot higher/farther? just boost the zoom higher to get it to have enough power to go there and back. :) Obviously this might make the bounce too narrow if the ceiling is at like 10 feet.
I would love to do a test( or see one) of it being used in this creative manner. the $ some people say might not be worth to spend to get it, might just come back to haunt them, when their flash just cant do what they want. im a canon user and the 200 zoom seems like something even for me to look into more. maybe im just crazy lol

Thermal warning is a nice touch (finally!), but no speedlight is worth near the price of, say, a AB800 with Vagabond II for my uses. Hopefully this drives the price of the SB800 down, though.
I keep thinking of Spinal Tap every time someone writes "the zoom goes up to 200."

My old lady says she is waiting for me to bring home an sb-1200.
I told her that two sb-600s were just as good. Then she went into a muffled giggle.

Looks very cool, sounds imporessive... but...
GN48 @ISO 200 ... I wonder if that is the GN at 200mm zoom? If so, then what's the GN at the lower end, for people shooting at, for example, 50mm?
How does it compare to other flashes? I want to upgrade to a Nikon flash, but this seems just on par with my existing Minolta that has a GN of over 50 @ ISO200 at 85mm.
