David, I only signed up for the free thing at Shoot Digital. I hope to network and maybe meet some like-minded folks.

I wasn't sure if I could submit work for which I do not have a model release, since a lot of my past work is street pics and sports shots. I know S!TD is for stock, so hence the concern.

Dave,
If you're looking at the travel schedule how about looking a little closer to home? I know London, Paris, Dubai, Seattle etc are cool but those of us within a couple of hours of you would like to go to a seminar also. Harrisburg, Pa is an hour or so north of you and I'm guessing you could sell out 3 days of seminars easily.
Thanks,

I thought I would start throwing in a few cool/delicious places to eat in Manhattan.... I'll Start with the cheap side:

Right down the street is an amazing little joint called Pommes Frite, as the name suggests they serve only belgian style french fries with hundreds of dipping sauces. Right down the street from that is a joint called Dumpling Man which serves up amazing dumplings. Both very cheap!! I will get back to everyone with the more expensive fare later, as well as some pubs I could see myself in....

A couple bars close by that people might consider:

McSorley's Ale House
15 E7th (betw. 2nd and 3rd)
The oldest bar in New York (1854) -- this place is an experience. Cheap beer (beer only... "light" or "dark") in a very cool environment.
www.mcsorleysnewyork.com/

Sala
344 Bowery at Great Jones
Spanish sangria/tapas place. Casual place, but a cool room, and fairly reasonable prices.
www.salanyc.com/salabowery.html

Truth be told, the location is great... close to the lower east side and alphabet city. With just a little bit of a walk, there are dozens of reasonable, casual bars.

One other notable option, if people are looking for a cheap, visually interesting place for dinner:

Panna II
1st avenue / 6th st.
Dirt cheap, not-bad Indian food, in a restaurant lit by thousands of little Christmas lights. Plus, the place is BYOB. It's definitely an experience. Here's a pic

I see a vision of two seminars(another of your friends wants to return during the fall)think!.... in the same weekend one starts Friday night one starts Saturday morning....sat afternoon we all go together with models and such ... Sunday play with our familys and torture them with some new set up shots......now that is a good weekend.

I see this vision in Northampton Ma and just thinkin here out loud .....

Everything comes to minimal cost for the crews.
I wasn't a Travel Agent for nothing

Nothing like Ma or VT when the leafs come dowm

A food option closer to home: diagonally across the street is Swift's Hibernian Lounge. Serves great pub food (pot pies, bangers and mash) and beer in increasing orders of magnitude. Also has a 10-foot portrait of Swift on the wall (sorry, it's a painting, not a photograph so no chance to revers engineer. We're talking 18th century, remember).

David,

Would it be alright if I filmed the seminar? I have a Casio EX-S600 which takes pretty decent video and my memory isn't going to hold half of what I'll learn. I'd set it up on my Joby tripod either by my feet or on my lap.

I know you said people will be taking setup shots (I'll probably take those too) but I figured I'd ask.

For those going to NYC workshop:

1. If you bring your PayPal email/receipt for the payment, it'll make check-in much smoother. Otherwise we need a cheek swab for DNA and a urine test.

2. Extra SB-800's are always welcome (I am only bringing 5) in case we want to do something really cool on a group scale. . .

3. I always have to balance what to bring and what not to bring, and one of the things I have to leave behind is a flex-type backdrop. If you have one you like, and would be easy to tote, feel free to bring it. That'll give us more options in the afternoon.

4. Because of the compressed time format, please plan to arrive between 9:30 and 10:00a, at which time we will begin promptly. Stragglers will be shot in the afternoon -- and lit very unflatteringly. . .

Actually, I am doing a shoot with local photog Tim Herzog tonight, but that is not open to all. (We are on a rooftop at sunset in the Central Park West area. If you see 5 SB's going off repeatedly, look up and yell, "hi!")

Tomorrow is for meetings and walking Manhattan all day in the hot sun. Staying at the historic Hotel Chelsea, where Sid offed Nancy and a whole lotta famous people used to live.

Without AC, I might add.

But you have to stay here once, just for the good creative ghosts. And, it's a buck twenty a night. In Manhattan...

Two questions: 1st, the event tomorrow is already closed for subscriptions? Pretty sure it is ... (fLIck!) and 2nd, maybe I misunderstood this part but, when you showing the 'connections' to flashes, I heard you say you can use the cable (SC-28 TTL Coiled) to connect a CANON hot shoe camera to a NIKON flash, the only thing you loose is TTL function? And about the different voltage, can not damage one or other?

Great day David! Well done indeed. I'm feeling a lot more excited to work with manual flash and break out of the CLS comfort zone; my PocketWizards are about to be much more heavily utilized and that's good. The light modifiers examples, especially the GOBO stuff with Dmitry's annex and Richard under the gridded light were really 'enlightening' .

Enjoy tomorrow and thanks again for all the info today and for handling all our questions with such enthusiasm and understanding for the different levels of knowledge and experience in the room. You have a way of auto-adjusting to the level of the question-asker without ever making anyone feel inept or newbie-ish, yet you still keep everyone engaged- that's good stuff. Keep it up.

If I could get some help from the Nikon side of the house.

Went home after the seminar and started nuking the dog with manual, off-camera flash. But can only get it set to control the flash from the camera, not from the flash as David was doing.

I am using a D300 and SB-800. Flash is set to manual. Camera is set to manual. Pop up flash is set to Commander mode, group 1 (my SB-800 is set to manual. When this is set I don't seem to be able to change amount of flash from the flash, but I can from the camera menu. What am I doing wrong?

Hey David, thanks for a great day yesterday! I would've loved to stick around and go out with the group, but my husband had basically spent the day wandering around the city (we're from Philly) and I knew he wouldn't be too enthused about listening to our geeky (I mean that in the best way possible) photography discussions, even over a beer or two.

It was really great to watch you walk through the thought process on each of the different setups, and I think the adjustments to shutter/aperture/flash power are beginning to sink in. Can't wait to get out and start practicing!

Thanks Carlos,

I got it. I had to set the flash to SU-4 mode and the Group to Manual in the camera. I'm flashing like crazy now.

I am truly humbled to have been able to make it down to NYC. You style and approach to teaching light is very organic and easy to follow. I must say i have enjoyed reading your blog and am lucky to have come across it when I did. You have taught me a lot and helped me to grow. i look forward to working with you again in the future and for a few more beers.
Cheers

Hey, all-

After midnite and just got back from S!TD, which was a blast. I am the Waling Dad right now, but will be traveling back to MD tomorrow and checking in more thoroughly late Mon of early Tues.

IF YOU STILL HAVE Q'S: Throw them in this thread, and we'll hit them upon my return.

Thanks again for the fun day and all the kind words!

Thanks again, David, for a great seminar! It's not just that the technical aspects suddenly seem not so daunting, but it's valuable to be exposed to your whole approach to photography. (The Inspiration Folder is a great idea.)

If we as photographers sometimes are guilty of forgetting what it's like to be in front of the camera, being shot by 50 strobists and the man himself is a sobering reminder :). Speaking of which, if any of you would like to share your set-up shots from the first afternoon shoot, please message me, I'd really appreciate it!

Many thanks,
Dmitry (of the alcove)

Like all the participants who have posted their appreciation for David great presentation, I would like to add mine. The Workshop was a great learning experience. I am still trying to digest and put to practice the many things that I have learnt. It would be great if a strobists' get together can be organized for the tri-state area.

I too had a great time. I personally learned the most by just watching David work -- both in interacting with his subjects, and troubleshooting problems.

Bummed I missed hanging for beers... I saw a lot of people bolting, and since I didn't hear anything being explicitly discussed, I figured it was a wrap. (I'm not so bright) Ah well, next time...

Throw in my thanks as well. Great way to spend the day. Still trying to figure out how to apply what I've seen and learned.

Does anyone have any sketches or notes for the setups David did? I was towards the sides and couldn't get too close to take any good notes. As the hours tick by my brain forgets the various setups. No worries if not.

Thanks again David and like danoots wish I had stuck around for the beers. Oh well.

Another question (see what a little knowledge does):

Can I use a Pocket Wizard on one SB800 and use the built-in flash on the D300 to trigger others or do I have to go all PW if using them? My thought is I can buy less PWs and only use them when the distance is too far or I have to go around corners.

Thanks,

Steven

Here's one of David from the pub afterwards after he showed how my point and shoot would trigger an SB-800. Surprise.
