DIY Beauty Dish - Yeah, another one!

view profile

tylerburkphotography says:

Hola fellow Strobists!
I am excited about my new beauty dish and I wanted to share my creation with who else? Yup, Strobist. Anyway, here it is.
Items used in the creation:

1- 14" plastic terra cotta bowl from Home Depot
2 - cans of Krylon Fusion paint (black & white)
1 - old 50 pack cd case.....thing.
1 - gutter thing from Home Depot (don't know the name but you probably know what I am talking about)
some epoxy and screws.
Total cost was probably around $15.00

The plastic gutter thing happens to fit my 550EX perfectly so I made this specifically for that flash. I cut a hole in the bowl the size of the flash then cut a hole in the cd case....thing the same size. Painted the bowl inside and out then drilled some screws and mounted the base of the cd case thing to the bowl. Instead of using a mirror in the cd case thing I took an old cd and epoxyed it to the inside of the lid. Just for fun I sprayed it with some Krylon Reflective paint (in my mind I was thinking it would intensify the light....probably not though). Anyway, that was about it. The velcro in the pic was a last minute add-on. It secures the bowl on the flash. But check it out. This thing probably weighs a pound or less so I don't worry about it being too heavy for the flash. Also I can pop the cd case thing off and have a direct light if needed. It actually gives it a directional quality to the light. All in all I'm pretty happy with it.

kd5jha - Nope, no color cast at all. You could use pretty much anything but I chose a cd cause it happened to be laying around when I was building it. Plus it's more of a mirror like surface than foil.

I like how light this is. I wouldn't worry about the weight being too much for my strobe to support. It also makes attaching it so much easier than adding an L-bracket.

I'm curious how closely the curvature of this bowl matches a 'real' beauty dish. Isn't that a critical factor of getting the "beauty dish" look?

If you add some brand signs it will look like a "pro" dish.
Seeing your gallery I understand you can't use cereal boxes...
I guess the gutter thing can be somehow attached to the umbrella mount, to avoid to have all the weight on the flash.

The CD has a 1.25" hole in the middle. When I made mine, I bought a plastic convex mirror (as jebleez suggests) for $3.50 and glued that over the CD, giving me more outward bounce and complete reflectivity.

is the bowl from the plants section of HD?

Only thing I'd suggest is a clear version of the CD spindle cover...that one looks a bit opaque.
Cool light design though.

tylerburkphotography says:

kenkyee - yes, it's from the garden section.
The cover is actually clear but has a bit of a frosted look due to the reflective paint I sprayed on it. In theory the reflective paint would give the light a bit more pop but I haven't even been able to play with this one much less experiment with different covers. Even if there was a difference it would probably be so minute it really wouldn't matter.

Nice job, it looks great! I like the CD in the end for a reflector--ingenious! I do agree with Bassworks that a convex mirror will spread the light out a little better. They have them at Pep Boys for like $7--that is what I used.

Oh, and play with your zoom! Mine was too wide and shot past the reflector at first.

tandaburk,

Just wanted to say thanks for your ingenious method - it motivated me to finally go out and build my own.

For my one I used a plastic planter base (rather than the planter itself), with a 25-CD case. The other change is that I used a convex mirror to help diffuse the light (a 37.5-CD case would probably have been the right height....). A Dremel tool makes short work of the cutting, and everything is held together with hot glue. Only mod I might make is to cut off the excess downspout connector that's protruding into the dish.

Total cost, not including paint, was <$15.

The CD case will eat some light. You can avoid using it by just drilling three holes in your dish and three holes in a CD, then use nuts to attach the CD with bolts to position the reflector. I covered the hole in my CD with a 3.5" convex mirror. Works great.

For ideas on using one of these, go to Wizwow' site www.lighting-essentials.com and poke around.

doug-jenn says:

captainxo,

The downspout connector looks essentially like this:

The connector has a large half and a small half, and everything either slides onto or into it. The bowl and cd case get cut out so that they slide snugly over the small half and butt up against the large half. I hot glued everything in place, but you could also use screws or brackets.

The flash fits into the large half and butts up against the smaller half. You could add padding to make a tighter fit, but everything is so light that there isn't a problem with it staying on, at least with my flash.

Hope that helps.

@flyhere

If you want to try or have both color dishes, just buy an extra planter dish and cut a hole in the center to allow ti to fit over the CD case and nest in the perm. mounted dish... I am sure that these things stack nicely by design for storage at the store...

Then just attach some Velcro to the back of the main dish and some Velcro strips to the secondary dish so that you can slip it on and Velcro it in place when you want to switch colors... If you don't like Velcro, use snap on buttons from the fabric store.

Then just paint the 2nd dish with either matte silver or Chrome spray paint... I bet that will work great and you can have both colors...

Try your luck with that one, George - I suspect every hardware store might use their own terminological variation. So, my best bet would be to actually visit a store and look at what they offer. That's an interesting mental exercise anyway - to figure out how you can creatively abuse parts that actually had been designed for another purpose. ;)

Is it just me, or does it seem like a lot of light is lost by the light that hits the center of the mirror / reflective object? All that light would bounce right back towards the center of the flash, and would have to be reflected again before (if) it hits the side of the dish.

It would seem to me that a better solution would be more of a cone-shaped reflector, with a steep angle at the tip and a shallower angle at the base. This would make sure that all light is directed away from the flash and towards the sides of the dish, and hopefully would reduce light loss.

Or, maybe a small "short" cone could be placed on center of the mirror and redirect just the light that would have been bounced back at the flash.

Something like this may be able to be scupled out of stryrofoam and covered in reflective aluminum HVAC tape, (or someone might find something similar at a Dollar Store that could be wrapped in foil tape and repurposed...)

@nbergevi

That's why some have improved upon this design by adding a convex mirror to the center of the CD case where the flash head is directed.

This directs the light outwards and into the dish...where it is dispersed.

But yes, you do lose some light to the reflections, but all modifiers normally cost you some light.

The filter companies (Lee,Roscoe, and GAM) actually all make a mirror silver material that could be cut into a strip and glued with spray adhesive to the bowl, but I am not sure that it would perform better than chrome spray paint...

See my post above...

nbergevi! What about a plastic funnel (with the narrow tube cut off, just the cone part) covered in reflective tape/tin foil? Your idea of the angled reflector seems to make more sense (to me) than the flat CD or slightly curved mirror... but I guess we'll never know until someone tries it.

nbergevi, cone-shaped reflectors are used in some omnidirectional hifi loudspeaker designs: The loudspeaker faces up vertically, and the cone sits on top of the speaker, pointing with its tip to the speaker's center. The shape of this cone is not a mathematically precise cone, it rather features a parabolic curve , so it should be quite suitable for reflecting light. These audio reflectors were made of black glossy plastic and had a base diameter of some three or five inches. The last time I saw such a thing is some years ago, but maybe someone still knows a manufacturer who makes these things.

Yeah, I'm no beauty either, but I did just finish my beauty dish and here are some quick (I-have-no-idea-what-I'm-doing-with-this-thing) photos.

Beauty Dish Example 2Beauty Dish Example 1

Couple of things about my dish:
- I did use the convex mirror inside the cd case. Could only find a 3" one though.
- The Home Depot by me only had 17" pots, so mines a bit larger.
- In my stupidity (hey, it's my 1st DIY project!) I put the plastic spout in backwards (so it's sticking into the pot). It still works well though.
- I first saw this on David Tejada's site (who linked back to this thread), so I got most of the extra ideas from him.
- HD didn't have the Krylon paint either, so it's just basic Rustoleum plastic spray paint.

How about, inside of collapsible bowl, put round aluminum panel with convex mirror with three spring coil legs.

CD spindle is an excellent idea, but I had to give up on making ring flash with it a few month ago as it eats up too much of light. You can cut out a piece and place it on flash like a gel to see how much you loose in f/stops.

I still think it is a genius idea to put bowl in combination with CD spindle.

Just so everyone is clear, you want the mirror to be convex, not concave. A concave mirror would simply concentrate the light back at the flash. A convex mirror helps disperse the light around the bowl (the bowl itself is concave, so maybe that's part of the confusion...).

Then paint the inside of the dome silver, and essentially you have a fully domed mirror. I'll be sure to let you guys know how it works out.

Mine is 15", lucky i had an old one in my garden, because I couldn't find any new ones with bowl-shape in shops (looked through B&Q, Homebase, Wicks). Still not found the gutter thing but oh well...

I have a 430EX flash and a 580EXII flash.

The grey gutter adapter is too small for the 580EX, but the 430EX will barely squeeze onto the 430EX.

Assuming I only make one (though for the price I can easily afford two), I guess I'll have to use the white plastic gutter in order to use my 580EX.

For anybody that's used the white gutter adapter that doug-used... did you guys cut off the smaller half?

@PhotosByVic: I had the same problem as you. And with enough brainstorming, the best solution I came up with was to use the white gutter adapter with my 580exII. It doesn't seem to fit at first but if you actually squeeze the plastic gutter with your hands you are able to slide the little guy onto the flash. It doesn't scratch the flash either because of the 580's rubber grip. This gives the beauty dish a secure hold when you cut for the smaller part.

The only thing I will add to this beauty dish thing is.....isn't the reflector in front of the light source in a Norman beauty dish concave?

this is to directly push the Photons back at the parabolic dish.....

Why have we gone to convex on the DYS versions

I could be wrong but I saw a Norman with the concave or was I dreaming?

Reason I am asking ...I'm working on the 22" water heater home depot version.

@ictigoibitties:

The white gutter is "unsqueezable"... it's pretty thick plastic.

I can squeeze grey gutter adapter around the 430ex... but there's NO way you could fit the 580ex in there...

@Wink... which 22" water heater version? Share the link!

@Wink: The Norman one is designed for a bare flash tube, not a fresnel lens. The tube naturally illuminates the whole surface and the centre piece is more to stop the direct light from the tube.

With the hotshoe DIY versions we need to turn a direct beam of light into a scattered one and to get that light onto the entire surface of the dish.

White paint drying in the garage!

BTW... using a utility knife to cut the pot and the CD spindle is a PAIN... and I'm NOT looking forward to cutting the gutter adapter.

nbergevi suggested a cone shape as apposed to the convex mirror earlier in the post. Thought that was an interesting concept so I quickly made one out of posterboard and covered it with aluminum foil. Tried a few quick shots and it did seem to squeeze out a bit more light. How much exactly is unknown. I'll try to get some pics up comparing the different options (mirror, cd, cone etc.). It was a quick experiment but for those looking to do this dish, I would suggest going with the cone idea. Not only is there a bit more light but you save the $$ from the mirror. I know, big deal what is a $1.95 for a mirror right? Well, I agree but another reason to go with the cone idea is that it weighs less than the mirror. So there. :) Then take the $1.95 you saved from the mirror and buy a bottle of Boones to celebrate your new toy.
