suggestions on program:
- DIY hour? if others are interested
- Freeform shooting?
- Assignments (shoot the CEO, shoot the rockstar etc)
- very short lunch (more shooting time)
- coffee breaks
- clear time schedule
you know... all the stuff suggested in the after Brussels meet thread :)

I'll be bringing an EOS 30D with lensen, 2x 540EZ, 2 nano stands, 2 silver umbrella's, 2 shoot through brollies, 1 Ebay 16 ch. trigger & receiver and an optical slave, a 580 EX and a METZ 40 MZ3-i.

Hi, I'd like to be there. Both dates are fine. Just don't let the costs run up to much, as I'm a poor starving-student who already spend far to much on gear. Although I haven't done the pocket wizard thing to my wallet (yet).
I'l be bringing along an SB800 with stand, brollie and the additional tools (DIY of course;) ).

Good luck on this. I hope it all turns out well for you. If we get our (German meetup - uncanceled) to work we will definately share whatever worked and what didn't work. Ours is planned for, what looks like, late February. So yours would be right around the corner from that.
If ours turns out being after yours, I'd be looking forward to hearing how yours went - what worked and didn't.
I hope they both turn out well.
Good luck,
Sean

Yeah, I'm assuming this will be in English?
And I saw no concrete details as to the location?
Either way, I'm interested and will see if I can conjur up 2-3 other aspiring Strobists.. I'll have them post their interest. I'll be sure to be available both dates.
Will an email list be created to keep all informed of developments, or should we just check this thread?

Hi all,
It's been a little quiet from my side. Might have something to do with me changing jobs on December 1st :).
As for the questions above:
- The language will probably be Dutch, but in general, "us Dutch blokes and gals" can express ourselves in English. I don't expect any problems in this area.
- As for the fee, I'm aiming for the same fee as the Brussels meeting.
I see there's enough interest to go ahead arranging the models & MUA. Since we shoot in a music center in a town that has a Rock Academy, I figured we could help out some young bands and do some promoshots instead of using models. Let me know what you think about this. Given enough interest, I'll contact some local bands.
After these are set, I'll post the final fee. This will be based on 9 photographers, so there will be 9 slots available. Everyone can enter on a first come, first serve basis. A received (and confirmed) payment will be your ticket.
Next, 3 groups will be formed, based on experience and equipment. Also, all groups will receive ASSIGNMENTS as HOMEWORK, to be finished by each group (as a group) BEFORE the meetup!!!! First off, this will help you previsualise, second this will result in using your shooting time more effective. Be aware that time management will be very strict! If you don't have the time to do the homework, please do not enter, as you will hinder your groupmates. I am aware that this sounds very strict and harsh, but this is for your own good ("yes mummy, I'll eat my spinach and liver" ;) )
Anyway, as soon as I can, I'll visit 013 to shoot some interior images to give you an impression. An agenda will also follow.
Cheers,
IllO

I'm definately opting for models instead of some young band. We need some girls/blokes that aren't 'scared' by the camera, and that will wait when we need to move lights. A bit more professionality then some ordinary band.
Unless ofcourse you want to do an " how to calm the subjects" -lesson.
An email-list chould be helpfull, I can see this thread dropping before someone gets a chance to read it. Anyways, kickass idea and when can I pay ? ;)

Homework? :S It's been quite a while since I've done any....
I cannot think of any band that's scared of the camera, I mean, can you imagine someone who'd like to play for a huge crowd but is afraid of the camera? Maybe go for 1 band and 2 models? I think the band idea is great since shooting a small group is different from shooting 1 person.

I think preparation is a very good idea. But do you intend the groups to actually meet before the meetup "for training"? Or can every member turn in his/her results seperately? Only the latter is possible for me.
Dutch as "general language" doesn't sound to be much fun for me. I can completely understand if you want to make this as simple as it can be for less proficient english speakers. Then this simply wouldn't be for non-dutch-speakers. That's all right if everybody is clear about this right from the start! I think you should announce this as either 100% Dutch or 100% English. 50/50 would probably be frustrating for most.

I think a band might be a cool idea. But they will have to know and understand that it's supposed to be a learning experience for us, so that they are patient when we need time to adjust lights or if we're going to experiment with something new.
Perhaps a couple that's willing to pose for us would give different shooting opportunity's as well.

@advance.horrid : try google newsreader. You can search for specific keywords/threads quite easily.
@o7photographs: I was thinking about band with max 4 members, as lighting them will give us quite a new challange. And I agree on the "camera shyness" vs performing for a crowd .
@Till_Hamburg: No, I don't intend the groups to physically meet before the actual meetup. But I will not hinder them either if they want to.
What I would like to see is that each group exchanges ideas on how to solve an assignment, what lighting setup to use, which variations etc, so they have a number of setups ready (on paper, in heads) by the time they actually meet. Use email, Skype, chat, whatever. What I want to see before the meetup is the sketched setups each group wants to use for starters, so we can evaluate them afterwards. I want this to be a learning experience for everyone.
And I think you're little on the negative side about Dutch as a general language, I expect each group will communicate in the way that's most efficient to them. That's one of the things I've seen in Brussels that settled itselve.
@Minosone: that's the general idea behind asking "young bands".
@European.Desperado: You can't? And here I was trying to start a discussion ;) But you are right...
So.. I'll leave the discussion models vs band vs a combination open til Christmas (unless there's a general agreement long before that date), Then I'll continue the quest for models/bands. Dunno how long theis will take. I'm aiming for Januari 12th to have everything in order (give or take a few days).
As for the date, I saw March 8th was prefered by most.

I'm still interested, but a lot depends on the info still to come. The Amount of homework, and the reaction time between homework and workshop could be an issue, because I usually have a rather full schedule. So, as soon as this gets more specific, I'll know if I could be able to honour 'my part of the deal'.
Furthermore, I have limited practical experience in strobism (hence the reason I'd love to participate, so I could learn). But if the pace is to high (so we'd use our shooting time more effective, as you put it), will there be time to learn, or would I slow down the rest of the group to much? (By the way: I did study lighting 101 etc. And I am busy in Light: science and magic).
As for band or model: both are o.k. to me.

I am a bit late to the party perhaps, but I am definitely interested in illo, is there still a slot free?
I would opt for the "shoot a band" thing if at all possible. It means someone actually benefits from the pictures besides ourselves. (I like to shoot "for" stuff more then just shoot in general).
There are many, many local bands that would be fun to use for this, if you need some help in that area, I know a few :P

Newsflash:
- Nobody's too late yet!
- Only one vote for models only, which means models & band combo
Since there are 3 groups, I'll try to find small groups max 5 persons
- I'll start on the assignments. I'll keep them relatively simple. Again, they're only meant to help you previsioning, work together as a group and start preperations before and not during the meetup. As a group, you're free to shoot any way you want.
- Before the end of the week, I'll post an agenda.
More info to follow...
Cheers,

OK, for everybody who has entered: it's time to share what experience you've got:
- Years of experience
- Photography experience (1-10, 10 being a well known master)
- Strobism experience (same scale as before)
- Equipment
Based on this information we'll form groups. Special request might be honoured, mail me if you (don't) want to work with someone and I'll see what I can do.
After that I'll start publishing the assignments - and you can work on that as a group.

Okay, let me start off:
- Years of experience
Roughly 30 years photographing everything, last 10 years part-time pro
- Photography experience (1-10, 10 being a well known master) 8
- Strobism experience (same scale as before)
Only starting to delve into this one and loving every minute of it, 7
- Equipment
Nikon gear: D2H, D200 and an assortment of glass, SB-800 and SB-80DX flashes, umbrellas, softbox, stands and Pocket Wizards.
I am willing to host an informal get together at my house if anybody from the group is interested.

Btw. thanks for the offer with the maison Illogical. I am not sure yet, if I will travel with my girl friend. It might be easier to just book a hotel room.
I think this is a good option. Shouldn't be too far from the train station and 013, right?!

I got a Nikon D50 at the end of 2005, but really started photography February of this year.
- 1 year (intensive) experience photography
Not sure about the experience levels. 10 is a well known master, what is 1? An ape, a p/s guy, me? Look at my photo stream.
@mildata, can your house easily be reached, i.e. without a car, from: 5018TX, Kempenbaan 2, Tilburg, Netherlands? ;-) Then I would be in.
You're talking about the night before, right?
EDIT: Oops, forgot the equipment. As I am traveling by train I would like to bring as less as possible. That would mean I bring a D300, one light stand, one SB-800, one white shoot through umbrella, one silver umbrella and two FCC pocket wizards.

Main reason for signing is is to boost my learning curve.Still working my way trough the lighting 102 section.

- Years of experience
Bought my SLR camera (300D) in March 2004... so that's almost about 4 years
- Photography experience (1-10, 10 being a well known master)
See my profile to learn yourself :)
I also have a profile at Modellennet (especially dedicated to modelphotography) at www.modellennet.be/photographer_det.php?pid=42
- Strobism experience (same scale as before)
Been using large studio strobes from 2005 approx. Have my own amateur studio now with 3 studio strobes. Off camera lighting, small scale (Canon EX 550), just about a couple of months. Have to learn how to use that small flash...
- Equipment
Canon 300D, 1x EX 550 flash, Tamron 28-70mm 2.8, Canon 150mm 2.8, Sigma 18-55mm.

- years of experience? in what exactly?
- photographic: there's a picture in my parents fotobook of me carying a camera at age 3 or so... so that'd be 30 years but more seriously I'd say 17 roughly. I'd say... 7 to 8-ish?
- strobism: 7?
- gear: very unlike the brussels meet it seems I'm being outnumbered for now: Canon 40d + glasswork, 4 flashes, white & silver umbrellas, gels, snoot, GI triggers, barndoors, straw grids, 2 lightstands euhm... probably forgetting loads of small stuff... oh yeah, most important: duct tape! :P
@Limpix: I'd certainly give you more than 5...
Looking forward to seeing y'all!

"Far"is a relative concept. If you mean by foot - it's relatively far. By car it's a few minutes :)
And no, I'm not Marc. I will not add myself to a group, but walk around with my D200 and a videocam to capture setups, the mood and a modelshot once in a while. Whenever possible I'll provide support, although I'm not an expert myself. For the Frankfurt meeting they've chartered someone (Bert Stephani) to supervise (great idea guys!).
And level 1... that's not an ape. That's more of a "ehr... what does this button do?"
I also rank you higher than a 5.
Hehehe, we certainly won't abuse this situation...much >:)

Photography experience: 7.5
Strobism experience: 6, mostly inanimate objects.
Equipment: Canon Eos 30D, some lenses. 580 EX, 2X 540 EZ, 1x Metz 40MZ-3i, 2xmanfrotti nano stand, 2x 43" shoot through brolly, 2x 30" silver reflective brolly, 1 Ebay 16 channel trigger and matching receiver, 2X optical slave trigger.

I'd say 5 for concerts, 3 for general. 1 for a monkey pressing a button.
- Strobism experience (same scale as before)
3? 2? dunno, not much at least.
- Equipment
Nikon body, some glass (more forthcoming before then hopefully), 2 SB-600, 1 SB-800 (hopefully). lightstand, umbrella's, etc.)

Seeing how fast this day was booked, I'd like to know who else would have liked to enter. Given enough interest and encouragement, me (or someone else) might want to organise another meeting.
That would be me... cr@p!

I'm willing to help organising where I can. We do have an exhibition at our photo club in January that I have to support though. Just let me know what you would want me to do and I'll let you know if it fits. My email is marc.verdiesenhccnetnl.

update on the gear, the SB-800 is secured and a nice piece of glass is added to the collection (the 10.5 fish, should be handy for this shoot).

Damn, why did you open the registration while I was on vacation. Now I missed it. Well If there's another spot available. I'm still interessed.

Marc Verdiesen Thanks, might be necessary for a second meetup. For now, I haven't seen enough reactions to encourage me to organise a second meet.
advance.horrid that's #2
I'd like to play with your new 10.5 baby ;)
Minosone And #3.
Why? Because I could put some extra time into this to prevent things slowing down. Yes, you missed this one, but I hope you had a good vacation.

I am sure a little play can be arranged.
The thing is very small though, much smaller than I expected!
And very, very sharp.
groups look good, what will be expected of us to have done beforehand?

@IllOgical42. Do you have any images from inside 013, the rooms where we will be working? That would be nice to get an idea.

I'm working on some very broad defined & interpretable assignments. The idea is to have a set of assignments. This will be your homework.
What I would like to see is each group produce a prevision of what you would like to see in a final image, plus the setup(s) needed to create that image. If possible, I would like to see one "bread-and-butter" and one more experimental prevision + setup per assignment. First, this will save time during the day because you have setups ready, second you will have a starting point to further develop upon during a shoot. And third, we can compare the results you've got (as a group) to the image you wanted to capture.
BTW I'm working on the assignments, and from what I've been told they are 'tres difficile' at the moment., so more pointers are necessary :)
Good question. I've been planning to do that for 2 weeks. Haven't accomplished this goal yet.

mildata: most (if not all) of the rooms are black. Only exceptions are the toilets and the backstage area's.
I personally wonder that (if we get to use the kleine zaal or somesuch) we can hang some backdrops, they are sure to have some white ones handy (for projecting things on). and a white bckground can become anything :P

Herman, the lobby isn't black and I think the hallways aren't but yeah, black seems to be their favorite :)
And I have a 3x6 m white backdrop...

Indeed, upstairs everything is quite dark, which adds to the challenge :). The lobby however has large glass wall from ground to ceiling.
Either that or #4 for another meet ;)
Btw - I made an appointment to go there tomorrow and shoot the location itself.

Cool, I wonder which parts we will be using.
Btw: it is very possible to bounce of the black ceiling the the "kleine zaal" using a single SB-600 if on ASA1600/1.8. So it isn't _that_ black.

Too bad I see this topic so late, also missed the Brussels meetup.
Would have loved to meet some of you guys (advance.horrid, Mariano, ...) and talk & practice with the strobism skills ...

I found this very interesting:

Are there other people (that are going to this meet) that want some of these and wouldn't mind sharing shipping costs?

Foyer, stairways, cafe, batcave, and dressing rooms for the models. Pics later this evening after the kids have gone to bed.
And yes, if a surface is reflective enough, bouncing IS possible. Just look at a new black shiny car...
#5.... and counting

OK here's 013 from the outside - just did a quick in and out, nothing special - no flashes or nothing. I spend more time talking to Herald from 013 (thanks dude!) and someone called John from some band that performs at the main stage later tonight. I think they are called called Obituary ;)

Thanks mate.
I see some great potential in the foyer area with the fencing and the lights above the foyer bar.

Too right - that's what we saw as well :)
Also, don't underestimate the halls & the bar - plenty of room. And due to time constraints on my behalf I haven't even shot the so called Bat Cave.
