Personally, I'm all for a separate bay area group as well. The main flickr group is so big that it's easy for threads to get lost, plus I think it'd be nice to have something focusing on our local community.

There's a couple of options...as a group it'd be good to perhaps use this thread to discuss which one looks to be the best and then get all of us behind it.

1. Bay Area Flickr group (ecphoto has started one over here. ) It's nice that it's still here at flickr for those who don't like to visit a lot of sites, but it still has the same downsides as this group/site in that flickr isn't really set up as a discussion board.

2. Create our own dedicated discussion board on a separate site. I have one set up as an example on proboards, and Stock Photo Journey has offered to host a board on his server if we want it completely under our control. I've used proboards for a couple of years now and I like the setup. Having our own board gives us a lot of freedom to organize things/dedicated sections/etc.

3. Join an existing site. Michael Soo has a bay area photography forum on his site that's been around for a while. I recently joined up after seeing a mention of it here. It's a general photography website and one that isn't limited to the strobist way ( link here)

Thoughts?

Well. One argument is that we are all likely to put our images on flickr anyway, so sharing them with the whole group is still an easy option. So what we are really looking for, if I'm looking at it correctly, is an easier way to discuss things, plus share some local spots of interest, plus possibly arrange meetups easier.

Sounds like a dedicated discussion forum to me. proboards seemed fine at first glace, but you and I might be the only ones registered so far :-)

A general forum also makes sense...perhaps the most, since we could add a little strobist section, with Michael Soo's permission (I haven't been to that one). Would we run into the same problem of the bay area forum not having any kind of regional basis, though? I still think "bay area" is a bit too big of an area. I, for one, can't make it to things that are more than about 30 minutes away on any kind of regular basis. I work full time, take MBA classes at night, and run my photo business somewhere in between there.

The one problem I see with going off Flickr is that Flickr strobists won't find us, and some people will even have a hard time finding us in other Flickr groups. And frankly, I have no time to monitor other forums or places.

i just stumbled on this thread today and wow! what great ideas. I am all for a localized group, its less intimidating for me :) I agree with kaiyen, Bay area is too big! i would have loved to go for the sat meetup but its in San Rafeal - pretty pretty far from Campbell:)
perhaps a larger bay area forum with subsections for south, east and north bays (SF and peninsula as well, my bad!). that way we can be localized enough yet be able to put together larger events , covering the entire bay area, provided enough interest.
i know nothing about setting up forums or boards :) so i will leave that to the pros. I am in, whatever you guys decide.

kaiyen  Pro User  says:

IvanoMak - my theory is that since we still will use flickr to host our photos, we will still largely be involved in this group anyway. Activity in the (south) bay group won't be massive, I don't think. More coordinating meetups.

And there is nothing to force you to monitor the other group. Everyone's contributions would be welcome, but a lot of us are busy, and we all make choices to get involved or not. No hard feelings if you don't get involved in a south bay area one, certainly. Who knows, maybe I won't get that involved.

One thing I will say, having just gotten flamed in another flickr group, is that...maybe meeting some of us in person wouldn't be such a bad thing. This strobist group is pretty good overall (though one would not think so based on my experiences in another thread, but I do feel that it's a good group), but it seems like a lot of people just blast others on flickr. If I knew epicureandeviles (phew) in person because we met up at some point to do a shoot, then perhaps we can avoid that. And share some knowledge.

Eh.

i find it difficult, at times, to relate to thousands of screen handles :P (i know! i know! mine is a mouthful). being able to meet in person and work together, at times, outside of these forums, world would be a huge plus.
i have so much to learn!

Yong Pong  Pro User  says:

in my opinion, if you move to a separate discussion board you're either going to have to plug it a lot in other threads or find some other way to let the other strobists on flickr know you've got it. but if you create it on flickr, when people search for strobist, they'll see it - and you're probably not going to have as much traffic as the 20k member strobist group has - so you'll be able to keep better track of things in a bay area flickr group.

plus, no one has to absorb any costs since flickr hosts everything.

if you create a separate forum, people might still flame you, the only difference being that if you have admin, you can kick them :)

Dave | daveCphoto.com says:

Good points about people finding a separate group on a different site. Why don't we all just start using ecphoto's bay area strobist group here (link again) and see where that leads? If it gets big enough to warrant separating from flickr, we can always do it then.

And yes, the bay area is a big place, but I'm sure there are a number of folks who would be willing to go to different events/meetups out of their area. I'd rather they all be in one group so that we all know about them rather than having to monitor a north-bay, south-bay, east-bay etc. group.

Sound good? Then come and join the new group :)

So, does anyone have any ideas for a south bay meet up? The bay is so large and a lot of ppl have plans for the 26th anyways, we could get another meet up going.

btw, it's pretty cool that someone is finally organizing another meet up. I have been monitoring this thread for a while and I am just disappointed I can't make it on saturday.

I posted in the other flickr group but I'll post it here too.

I'd be happy to volunteer my studio, but my schedule for the next few Saturdays is kinda yucky at the moment (definitely no can do 1/26, 2/9, 2/16, 2/23, 2/29-3/2). A Friday night would be doable and I think I can get a Sunday free with enough notice.

I was all excited about this Satruday's meetup. Was willing to drive 21/2 hours from Mt. House to San Rafael, but fate has it , family obligations - I can't make it. boohoo! If there is a meetup set up for the south bay, I'm in! Closer drive for me. Friday-Saturday or Sunday I'm in! I'm In!

Are there any strobists in Mountain House here?

Hey All ...

We still have seven on the list for Saturday:

oaxoax
ddg572002
msleaves
kaptures
ringydingydo
CherylSavan
dabeed74

and still eight watching:

gwen
brett_coon
purplezebra
FarazShah
eventbud
verbad
dardarsauce
jScribble

(Sign up is here).

I'd love it if people who are committed would email me so I know a bit better who's coming. This is a first-time thing for me and organization is not my strong suit. So, please shoot me a flickrmail with your real email, and I'll send you mine, which will have the studio address and my cell phone. The studio is on the second floor of a warehouse so you'll need to call my cell on Saturday so I can open the door.

Does anyone have a strong preference for starting times. I'm thinking about 10 a.m. and go to 3 or 4. How does that sound?

I've also put out some feelers on Craigslist and Model Mayhem for a some victims subjects and gotten a couple of responses. I think we should be able to recruit at least one. In return, they will expect a CD of some the images we make. We can work out how to do that pretty easily,

Gear: The studio has lights, which we can use, but since this is Strobist thing please bring your small lights and triggers if you've got them. I also have an assortment of umbrellas and reflectors, but more is better, so please bring them if you've got them. Snoots, and grid spots, too.

Ogalthorpe has put together a good outline on a Strobist meetup. Try to read it beforehand. He's got some good thoughts on sharing time and collaboration.

What else should we be thinking about?

Cheers,

Tim

10 to 4 works for me. I've got a couple of light stands, a 5-in-1 reflector, 2 umbrellas, and a diffuser that I'll bring. Oh, and a piece of foamcore for a reflector too.

Any details/logistics we want to work out beforehand so we don't waste time the day of? Any specific topics that we want to cover or things that people want to learn?

For me I'd like to learn more about posing and light set-up for portraits (with a 2-light setup). Also how to best light a room overall to shoot an event/party/get together, etc.

Out of curiosity, what's the experience level of all of you that are coming? I know that Tim's a pro, and I'm new to the strobist thing...

Dabeed's asked a good question. Please share any thoughts on what'd you'd like to do on Saturday.

There's enough space in the studio to have two for sure and maybe three shots going at once with different setups, plus if the sun ever comes out we can go outside.

It's not a huge space, but the ceiling is very high, so it might be difficult to try the David Hobby-put-some-strobes-in-the-corner-to-light-a-room trick, but we can try.

Also, I've got some notices out seeking models, but don't have a firm commitment yet and experience tells me the no-show factor will certiainly come into play. So ... if you've got a friend who's willing to step in, bring him/her along.

You guys would pick the day my company ski trip is planned on. I live in Stockton and did drive to Palo Alto for a meetup once. Only 4 of us showed up. Kind of funky weather now but I'd like to get a meetup going closer to Stockton. It's hard to believe with David's seminar selling out in 3 minutes that there aren't more meetups in Northern CA.

One other thing I'd like to learn more is how to use a bare strobe/hard light more effectively. I find that I'm always putting my umbrellas on because if I don't, my pics end up having that typical on-camera direct flash look.

I really would like to practice photographing people. First with some even lighting and striving for a bright white background. Then switch to a more edgy and moody lighting - hi contrast and fade to black. I'm a notch above beginner as I did this off cam flash in the late 70's with good results but not for a long long time.

oaxoax, I'm am going to go out on a limb and post to www.modelmayhem for any type of model to sign up on your events page.

I plan urban exploration and local photography excursions for the youth in Palo Alto as I teach and am pursuing photography on my gap year.
I just ordered a kit with two umbrellas from midwest photo exchange to take photos for prom, but would definitely be interested in meeting up with anyone else in the area, even if it is just a couple other people - that way, we get to learn from each other in greater depth.

Wow, I searched for sf meetup and got this, but was scrolling through it and as it turns out, someone else is also named Alton.

Anyways, Meetup.com could also work for organization as well - either way, let me know if you would like to arrange for anything - I can have a dozen or so people attend at least.
