Strobist MeetUp embrace Brussels (3rd November at Tour & Taxis)

view profile

Rui M Leal says:

Hello,

I'm a Portuguese professional photographer living in Luxembourg. I have a Lighting Mods blog about DIY and great stuff for your small strobes based on the thoughts of David Hobby from Strobist, my personal web page is at www.ruimleal-photography.net.

I would like to begin this MeetUp group with some fellow photographers so we could share and improve our lighting skills.

So I'm organizing a MeetUp group in Brussels, depending on the acceptance and the location of the people interested.

Planing for Saturday the 3rd of November 2007. Place and location is still yet to be define so I'm counting on suggestions on this matter.

And this, see the Video (Ogalthorpe was on this one), is what you could expect from it.

Number of people in will be at most 10 photographers divided in 3 groups of 3 photographers where one will photograph and the other 2 will assist in a rotation basis. All photographers attending will be able to rotate through all 3 sets and making their own shots always assisted by me or by other nominated photographer .

Good self motivation is needed and knowledge of Strobist methods. At least one trigger flash with remote trigger (PW or GI or other) is required. This would make things much easier on exchanging gears if needed.

I can supply 2 triggers for Gadget Infinity and 4 receivers as well as Pocket Wizards 1 Trigger and 2 PW2 (Triger/Receiver). 2 Nikon SB26 with power packs and 1 580EX with power pack as well as hot shoe connections, stands, clamps, umbrellas and other DIY gadgets.

Any suggestions on renting a roof or a quite place (maybe some old houses) in the surroundings of Luxembourg or Brussels, for 10, as long as some models for TFCD with a released signed for each participant would be more than welcome.

Also post in some photos or suggestion on what you would like to shoot and experiment based on the 101 and 102 Strobist methods so it could be planned and schedule in advance.

If you think you will meet this requirement join us.

At this point no fee will be required but if in a situation where models and space will require payment a fee will be indicated later on.

Take a look at some previous shots from other Meetings:
www.nicholaushaskins.com/2007/08/florida-strobist-meet-hi...
strobist.blogspot.com/2007/08/florida-strobists-throwin-d...
strobist.blogspot.com/2007/08/flashers-spotted-in-florida...

I added a small subscription fee of €30,00 euros just to make sure people would be coming and time would not be spent in vain for the organization of this.
If the meeting would change (by any reason) refunds will be issued.

Subscription fee removed (all places filled)

Schedule (due to the Tour and Taxis opening at 10h00 this was slightly changed so here is the final):

09:00 - 09:30 - Morning check-in/setup and models/photographers meet and greet.
09:30 - 09:45 - Brief introduction to the sessions and organizational procedures.
09:45 - 12:30 - Shooting 3 Models in a 3 different environmental situations in a Strobist context ( Lighting 101: Bouncing off of Walls and Ceilings, Lighting 101: Hard Light and Lighting 101: Headshot in a Corner).
12:30 - 13:00 - Check on computer what have been done through the setups and discussion matter concerning the setups, Q&A briefing and suggestions.
13:00 - 14:30 - Lunch and some talk about (lunch time could be shorter if the location has good accesses).
14:30 - 17:30 - Shooting the 3 models in another Strobist context ( Lighting 101: Cross Lighting, Lighting 101: Using Gels to Correct Light and Lighting 101: Cereal Box Snoots and GoBo's).

These are just suggestions they are not final and could change depending on the location (inside or outside) so use this Flickr thread for questions and/or discussions on this.

The Good Reverend Ogalthorpe [deleted] says:

Hey Rui.

I will be in Spain (Girona) starting Nov. 5 for a little over a week. If you can move it back to the following weekend, I would love to attend. I don't have any firm plans yet. But the general plan is Seattle to Dublin on Nov. 1. Dublin to Girona Nov.5 and then I don't yet have return plans. I could easily fly up to Brussels or nearby.

Anyway, if it works, I would totally love to do it.

Rui M Leal says:

Manuel Van De Weijer I thought weekends will be much easier for everyone but since I'm now starting this thread let's see what will come up from here.

Ogalthorpe That's an idea if we could come up with at least 10 people to make it on that day no problem with me. The 3rd I thought it was a good starting date for this :)

Thanks for the invite on MySpace.
I think this would be a good idea. I think Brussels would be a better idea for me cause I have a direct flight to Brussels, but for Luxembourg I should come over with a car which is not something I would like too at this moment ;)

I currently have two wireless systems. One system is Elinchrom Skyport and another one is a Chinese no name system which is not 100% sure with my Balcar flashes. But I have no PW.

On the flash side I have 220V studio flashes but I can also use my Canon SpeedLite & Nikon SB24 flashes.

If I can fit in into my scedule, I'll be happy to join you guys.
If I can make it, I can probably arrange for some models.

There are two other photographers that I know might be interested to join, but they're on holiday at the moment.

Maybe the 3th of november is a bit short notice for some people to make arrangements (and we still have to find a place to meet and shoot)

Rui M Leal says:

Peter Kremzar Hey thanks for the reply and the announcement.

Thanks for the offer on studio strobes. I also got mine here but I think the idea here is make small strobes shine like BIG ones.

This is why I call it Strobist MeetUp and not workshop. But since you got your small ones just bring them in.

Anyone have a good place where we could make this happen?

I don't see a lot of interested people here yet.

If we are going to make it on Brussels at least we could have some feedback from the people living there... come on any ideas or places?

I will make an announcement on Model Mayhem to get some nice models for the day.

madelien says:

I'd be interested in a Strobist meetup in Brussels, but something more like a seminar thing, with people giving lectures in their field of expertise. The idea of ten or more photographers aiming at one poor model gives me the heebie geebies. I'm usually very shy of anything photo-nerdish.

The idea of renting a studio also seems fairly limiting. Maybe I underestimate the number of Belgian strobists, but I think we could make quite an unexpected turn-out.

I would join a meeting in Brussels, along with two friends/ fellow photographers.
We have some PW's and strobes (SB26, SB28's, SB800 ...)

I agree with Madelien and would prefer a kinda seminar instead of shooting models.
People lecturing in their field of experience might be a long (and expensive) shot, but we could (as a starter) excecute the Strobist Assignments and off course discuss techniques and gear.

Off course, a seminar envolves far more preparation, organizing ...

Anyway, we ( Belgian strobists) should get in touch ! :-)

madelien says:

I'd sign up for a seminar/workshop by Gerard any day of the week. I've seen his setups for modelshoots on location, and found them really inspiring. I think I could learn more from watching him light something, then by being part of a group of ten attempting to light something all at once.

Of course he uses a few products by Lastolite which are momentarily waaay out of my price range, but I'll try to ignore that.

I'm from Ghent by the way. *waves* Belgian Strobists should totally get in touch. I think there's quite a fair few of us.

Rui M Leal says:

Hi madelien,

well I think if this would be a seminar then we would come up with some fees for the attendees and would have nothing to do with Strobist meeting group where people share their lighting ideas with others by the Monkey see Monkey do theory.

It was never my intention on making this a seminar since David will be doing one in Paris a couple of days my idea of putting this Meet Group up.

When I decided to create this meeting group was to be able to contact with other people in love with the Strobist methods and share ideas with low budget equipment while getting great results with it.

As Ogalthorpe said your work is also very good and why don't you consider on giving us a seminar after this meeting ;)

I also plan on getting 3 models for the shootings so I would not think people would get bored with this. Just take look a at some other successful examples from other MeetUps.

Here goes the link to the Florida one www.nicholaushaskins.com/2007/08/florida-strobist-meet-hi...

The main idea here is to follow the techniques we learned from Strobist and make them work for your projects either if your a professional or an amateur just giving your first steps and while doing this share the knowledge with other fellows on a small group basis.

I know that I also would prefer on getting me into a plane and take a workshop with LaChapelle, Maisel or Klein but then again this would not be a MeetUp.

Anyway thanks for the ideas maybe next time somebody could have a better idea to make this thing going :)

Well I'm putting all my gear available to the people attending and also would be going from Luxembourg to Brussels on my expenses. So what more can I say to somebody who's willing to share some great stuff with others.

I like the pictures you have on your page with the flowers on the girls hand a nice Grid you have there :)

You're more than welcome to join the Meeting.
As soon as we have a few people I will start making a list.

I've been contacted also by a couple of models M/F who would like to join us but have not decided which ones will be.

If anyone have any model friend who would like to participate just let me know so we can work this out.

I'm now in Lisbon organizing the Lisbon Fashion week photo shoots but I plan In a few days to post a "what will you be facing" for the Meet Group.

Maybe this way people would be more interested on a particular set and then apply for it rather then mumbling around with no directions to go to.

Up until now I did not get any place suggestions or setups that people would like to face... this is not getting warm :(

The Good Reverend Ogalthorpe [deleted] says:

from my point of view the meetups are more about having fun, meeting new people first and then getting some good shots. from my eperience in Seattle and from what I saw in New York, your group really needs some time to get to know each other first. The Seattle meetup that you saw in the video was our third one. The first one was very informal, just playing around. The second one was a Lighting 101 bootcamp type of event. Then the third one was more advanced. People knew the equipment, they knew each other. And more importantly I made sure they had an idea of what they wanted to shoot before even setting foot in the studio.

The New York group's first meetup was last week. And I see the same progression happening there. The first one was informal with people getting know each other and figuring out how to work in a group. I can't speak for the Florida group, so maybe they'll chime in with some advice.

But I would say that for some success, make sure you have know what you want to shoot before you even start. Have people give ideas and example photographs. that way you can have the models prepare. and also a good discussion before hand can help all the members know where each other is coming from and generate some discussion.

Without this type of preparation, i think the kind of meetup you've seen in videos will be hard to achieve.

Serge Van Cauwenbergh [deleted] says:

Hello Rui,

I'm also interested but don't have the same knowledge about Strobist-techniques as most of you have. And also my equipment is not yet complete. I do have a SB600 flash which I can trigger through my D200, and I do also have a tripod for that flash with umbrella adapter, but that's about it. I still have to buy an umbrella and another SB600/800 or similar. I don't know if I can attend? Or maybe as an observer to watch how you guys work and set up things?

I live close to Brussels, so that would be fine. So far, the date is also okay.

Rui M Leal says:

sergevc thanks for joining the discussing. Well I thin you can join in as a participant. I have some gear for at least 2 setups and sure we can make it by then and arrange another setup.

If you want to join in at first start your way through the Strobist 101 by yourself and get to know the techniques any doubts you have you can then tune them up at the MeetUp.

I'm not willing to risk my ass out of work to come up ending with 3 models 1 hairstylist and 1 Make-Up artist and myself shooting.

It doesn't sound bad at all. A small fee is OK to get things a bit more serious. That place in Leuven is a "legend" among local photographers. It would be nice to get there together but might be a bit unreachable for people coming by public transport (I haven't been there myself but a photographer good friend of mine was and she said it was really cool)

Based on Strobist Lighting 101. Also take at On Assignments for some more ideas.

I wouldn't mind a focus on beauty photography, perhaps how to incoorporate things like a beauty dish or a softbox into strobism? Hopefully I'll have my ordered Lastolite UmbrellaBox by then. Maybe it would be best to find out the level of experience and divide into two groups, beginner and intermediate? I definitely want to be working with more than one flash, as I've been doing enough of that in the past months. I'd like to practice on group shots, since I do a lot of those, but it's harder getting several persons to pose for your experiments, than just one person. Here it's always my poor boyfriend who gets the short end of the straw.

Pity about Salve Mater, it seemed like jùst the place. Anybody that can think of a good place? the Waterschei or Winterslag mines in Genk are excellent places, I've done a wedding shoot there in May and have been aching to return. They do charge 50 euros rent, though.

I just started out and nowhere near you guys' level. If that's no problem, I would love to join in.

Salve Mater would have been excellent for me, very close to my home, if it's somewhere else I would have to use public transport or carpool :)

Of course it'll all depend on the date...

The interest here is to start up and then improve with meetups.

UPDATE:

I have now confirmed and paid:

- Ken Crites
- Rui M Leal
- Claude Piscitelli

So there is still plenty of room for more people to come.

I haven't found, yet, a suitable place so we can meet and do this... any ideas for some abandoned place or covered one would be much appreciated?

Next week I will be updating the light concepts I would like to approach on the MeetUp.

I'm also planning on giving some money (from the registration fee) to the models for their time and patience, more on this later on.

I will come and pay when officially fixed. I can only come in BXL or not so far from +/- 50 or 75 KM around.

rys5bru I leave that up to you.

The available places are 10 at most and will only be reserved when paid.
So you will decide when will be the best time to sign.

Check their portfolios for some pictures.

I'm also looking hard for a nice place to meet but couldn't come with a nice one for that date.

Anyone from Brussels could suggest some good space covered near places where we could eat something during lunch break?

o7photographs Not yet.
I'm searching some places in Brussels but since I'm not local it's getting hard to find some quite one's where we could all meet without getting into trouble.

Do you have any suggestions?

Rui M Leal says:

Alexandre Istratov Feel free to come in, this does not have any knowledge degree on Strobist lighting.

Maybe on future one's I will implement that, but for now I would like to meet more people and start this group going step by step.

Are there any abandoned places where we can stay inside and make some cool pictures even if I have to get a permit ?

Take a look at some of these places maybe we could find one safe so we can actually make the shoot without too much outsiders look.

maybe:
www.herisem.be/en/conference_rooms.php

or studio:
www.fotostudio-verhuur.be/

might be a bit expensive but that's just my guess....
www.hannelore.be/toon.php?id=127279

Illogical means inside the atomium :)

or maybe a small gym or at the university or hogeschool...
I just don't have any contacts there :(

Just remember that the urban exploring locations do not come with heating!

o7photographs Thanks I will take a look at those.

Since not many people are registering I do not want to get a paid place since I do not know how people would think about this.

I also know that abandoned places would not get us into food stores well but at least we do not have to pay for them.

If someone else could get us some more ideas would be great. Since I'm not a local for me it's getting a bit difficult to have a suitable place.

I will contact the Studio and see if they can get us a place for free.

Also would be nice if we could make this near the center because it will be more pleased to everybody.

Cinema Theater Varia

Anyone got any idea where is this building and if we can get some permits to get in and photograph?

I live in Brussels but I only can come up with Tour and Taxis as a nice location for a meet up.

Other places in the center are to crowded and maybe not very safe.

Maybe the renovated theater KVS, in the city center, but I've never been there:
www.flickr.com/photos/jordane/402037227/
www.kvs.be/index2.php?page=gebouwen

The atomium is beautiful to shoot, but maybe not a very good idea.
It's not in the center and you can only get pictures from the outside, unless everyone pays the entrance. Inside it's also very crowdy and small.
And according to SABAM (the Belgian Society of Authors, Composers, and Publishers), any and all self-made images of the Atomium are in violation of copyright. So maybe you even get in trouble over there by shooting it.

IllOgical42 Do you think it's a safe place and no problems concerning permits for photographs?

I found a link with some pic of the place Sanatorium Tombeek

I just wanna make a safe meet up so we can get great shots and this looks like the place for it. Since if the weather is good we can make it outside and if it's not we can always go inside and explore some nice background textures.

Didier Jouret Thanks for the links of the places but as you can imagine would be dificult to manage a 3 groups of 3 people with strobes, stands, umbrellas, Models and all the rest in a place where people are passing by.

I took a look at Tour & Taxis and it looks like a good place to photograph but as Herman Horsten had already mentioned that we may need a permit and will have to pay for the space. Since I did not received any feedback from you guys concerning a paying space I will skip this one.

Through one of my sports friends I have contact with: www.dojodubrochet.be/
check pics under "Location d'espaces" for pictures.
They will let me know (probably this evening) if it is available.

Same as the Paris seminar? The one who finds the location gets a free ticket? :P
