Joe McNally coined it. They work great -- and are usually free -- but they are a pain to collapse, and you can't check them as baggage.

They're very heavy when they blow over in the wind. Noisy too.
Hard to fit more than one or two in the trunk of your car.

I tried to drill a couple 1/4" holes in my VA lightstand so I could strap it to my back. Didn't go so well.

I tried to use one last week, but it didn't work out well.
I was shooting in a mall, and a PR person said she'd be with me all day, (I was shooting in several stores) so I suggested it might speed things up if she held the flash, since she could aim it faster than me moving back and forth between the flash and the camera.
A single flash didn't do much in the room, so after moving her around a couple of times to try and find a place that it would help, she 'discovered' that she needed to be somewhere else, and I (and my two light stands) had the rest of the day to myself. (That wasn't the plan... really. I was hoping it really would speed things up.)
I'll be posting some pictures after they are published in the newspaper I was shooting for. (Later this month.)

Mullenite, did we seriously cause this big of a craze?
The term was used at the Florida Strobist meet, referring to my assitant Chris. He is my, "voice activated lightstand."
I do post that term on forums everywhere, here on flickr, and on my blog. Mullenite coined that term at the meet!
I call him VAL now! Ha!

Nick - I'm not sure where but I had heard it elsewhere so I can't take credit, but I use it all the time. I get a lot of strange looks when not in the company of photographers.

When your VAL gets out of line, explain to him or her that there is a long line of mimes who would gladly step up to the plate.
( Of course, they would know that you're bluffing; I mean MIMES...come on !!! )

Funny stuff. Mine sometimes doubles as a gear rack or GR, which occasionally gets a grrrrrr sound from me. In addition to that I also have attachments for it one being a monopod and it then becomes a VALB (voice activated light boom). The other thing I like about mine is it comes with two clamps so it can hold two flash heads in different positions. Mine is a very versatile part of my kit. Other than the occasional service issues, storage, feeding, down time (potty breaks), noise (occasional complaint). I have found it to be one of my better investments. The best part is it's been with me for over 38 years, with only minor service issues, and at this point I'm not sure who will wear out first her or me. Actually the best part is she puts up with all my stuff. Great thread all.

I used this VAL in Florida.

I have wanted to go into production with this model, but these are quite high maintenance and the older model - err, vintage... I mean, trusty VAL got really pissed off.
