How To: Mounting an SB800 to a AB22R Beauty Dish

view profile

Now that I am addicted (afflicted?) to my SB800 flash units I wanted to find a way to use them with my existing light modifiers for those times when I want to be free of cords & cables.

Shown here is how to invest 10 minutes and $6 to mount an SB800 to an Alien Bees Beauty Dish

SB-AB22

The "speedring" consists of a 3 In. PVC DWV MIP Adapter Hub as the light stand mount and a 3 In. Qwik Cap as a retainer and flash mount.

SB-AB Speedring

1. Drill and tap a 1/4"-20 threaded hole in the PVC adapter to receive the 1/4" threaded connector that comes with your umbrella stand.

2. Attach the connector to the PVC adaptor.

3. Using a utility knife, cut a opening in the Quik Cap to hold the diffuser cap from the flash unit.

4. Cut the top off the flash diffuser cap so it can be used to mount the flash to the quik cap (without it also being a diffuser)

5. Place the modified diffuser cap in the opening you cut in the quik cap (friction fit)

6. Attach the PVC "speedring" to the light stand & slip the beauty dish over the threads.

7. On the inside of the beauty dish attach the quick cap to the PVC "speedring" (friction fit) thus holding the beauty dish in place.

8. Snap the flash unit onto the diffuser cap to complete the assembly.

It is not absolutely necessary to use the band clamp included with the quik cap, but I found that ,even when adjusted loosely, it does help to maintain the round shape of the quick cap and give a more secure feeling to the assembly.

First, a very slick setup and a nice modification.

I see that you have the 1/4" -20 stud end of the 5/8 brass insert threaded directly into the PVC adapter. Likely the insert that came with your umbrella adapter shown in the photographs.

All the the weight of the beauty ring is hinging off this attachment point. And, you are only getting a few threads of engagement in PVC plastic. I am very leery of the robustness of this setup.

I suggest that you find the other 5/8 inch brass insert that came with your umbrella adapter. It has a 1/4" - hole in one end, and use that with a 1/4" -20 bolt with a hex head and a fender washer. Just run this bolt through the hole you already have (you may need to enlarge it slightly).

This will give you a setup where this hinged weight is held by a setup that is much more secure than two or three PVC threads..

Enjoy! Lon

how does the light distribution compare to using a strobe? do you still get all the benefits of using a BD?

and what kind of lightstand did you need for this? I'm assuming the relatively light lightstands you use for flashes would just tilt over :-)

I was looking at beauty dishes and wondering if this could be done since the AB one isn't that much more than the $80 fleabay ones, so thanks for the mod...

you can also use the grey gutter piece from home depot and have the strobemounted normally (vertically) to your light stand. a bracket could help with the weight too, connecting the dish to the stand/shoe

I really like this idea but does anyone know if there's a way to mount 2 speedlights with any given AB light modifier? Or is the diameter too small to make that physically possible?

I know this an old post but so far this is turning out to be the best solution to my old problem. I use Sony cameras and speedlights so I had to make a few modifications to the Quick Cap. My main problem with doing the strobist thing was that I could not safely mount my speedlight onto a stand without breaking it until now. (I had to mount the receiver to an adapter then to a Sony flash creating a small "neck" that held all the tension and weight) Now all the stress is on the PVC segment. Much better. I will be further modifying the set up so that it can be hand held with a painter's extension pole. Many thanks
