Hello everyone!
I just stumbled across the Strobist website (from a link on Zenfolio) and read about this seminar. I am very interested in the topic and was happy to sign up for this seminar being held just blocks from my home! I signed up for the Saturday session.
Hopefully it's okay that I"m new to Strobist and just a beginner in learning to use flash. I was glad to read about the option for a refund - simply because I am so new to Strobist, I need to make sure it's really what I'm looking. I doubt I'll ask for a refund, but it's nice to know I have that option 'just in case'.
A quick look here tells me you are all very friendly. I hope to learn quickly and start posting some of my flash pictures on this site.

Since there will be 80,000 strobists filling up the hotel, do we get a rate on rooms?
Looks like there might be a typo above. I'm seeing $18 for parking, not $10.
Glad to pay for a Strobist seminar, but the Hilton and the Strobist are two separate entities. :)

Welcome aboard. Read through the Lighting 101. If that makes some sense to you, you'll be fine.
IA-
80,000? That's a scary thought! That's a big-time college football stadium.
I was quoted $10 for parking. I will look into it. Thanks for the heads-up.
The hotel biz is apparently doing very well this year. So much so that they are not doig courtesy seminar rates above and beyind the weekend rate, which was quoted as $149.95.
So feel free to try the usual haunts for better rates, and please post if you find better than $149.95

Both seminars have been filled.
But there will probably be a few seats that open up in the interim as peoples' plans change, etc.
If you would like to be on the wait list, please leave me a note below in this thread. I will use this list anc make contatc via Flickr mail when something opens up.
Please be sure to note whether you are open to Saturday, Sunday or either day.

Here's a link for planning a cheap trip to the workshop via public transit using the
King County Metro Trip Planner. You can put in "SEATAC Airport" as the destination. If you're just looking for inexpensive parking, you can use the Burien Park and Ride and take the bus -- about 10 minutes and $1.25, don't know what (if anything) the Park and Ride would cost on the weekend.
There are a lot of hotels in the area that cater to people flying out early in the morning. Rooms are about $50 to $70 and you get a shuttle ride to the airport. Used to stay in them all the time -- nothing special, but the price is right (well at least better).
Looking forward to Saturday, Doug

@Yollie51: Good to see a beginner taking the leap. I was hoping for some company! I obtained my first SLR over 50 years ago, but I have never done lighting and learning to use a speedlight is all new for me. Now I have to figure out a good choice for "off-camera" flash and see what I can do to practice with something simple on my D80.
I notice that Lighting 101 skips steps for me, especially around finding some beginner strobe to use with a DSLR. I think I'd better find a book. Have you found one that handles the basics?

Would folks want to do the Friday night mixer somewhere other than the hotel bar? I understand it's convenient for people flying in who don't have cars, but there are plenty of places to go that are more interesting. My suggestion would be Fremont. Are a lot of folks flying in?

Hello David,

I am a newbie to the whole lighting thing (I like to say that I prefer "natural light" but that's mostly because using strobes still intimidates the stuffing out of me!) I have gotten lots of great info from strobist already -- and I am REALLY looking forward to the seminar! See everyone Saturday.
The start time IS 9 a.m., right?

Oh, that's so nice of Sarah. Yes, I am the Tina that Sarah in DC mentioned. She's the one who told me about Strobist -- and she contacted me about the Seattle seminar and told me that I simply had to camp out by my computer until the moment that tickets went on sale. In retrospect, I probably didn't need to take the "camping out" thing quite so literally ... :-)

Never got around to asking, but your white balance was daylight for images that weren't color-shifted. Why not the flash setting? From what I can tell, they are both the same color temp. (5500K), but the daylight setting has an additional tint shift.
Personal preference? Technical reason?
Thank you so much for making the trek to Seattle and for putting so much into the two days.

I am so tired.
But I had such great fun meeting so many of you this weekend. Ditto the after-hours lobby conversations, too. Please feel free to continue our Seattle discussions here and ask Q's on points that may not be clear yet.
And remember, don't try to absorb every detail we talked about. Just keep it somewhere in your mind where you can access it when the time is right. What matters is the overall approach to expanding your comfort level with light.
Ellarose- I shoot with my camera set on daylight when I use flash. The flash setting warms up everything just a tad. If I want my flash warmed, I can do it with a gel (to whatever degree that I want) without doing so to the ambient-lit areas of the frame.
Thanks again, y'all,
-David
