1colin I am just playing around with ya. To me it does sort of look like the effect that Dave Hill (and others) are doing. As I mentioned earlier, it's lighting lighting lighting and a few photoshop tweaks... layers, selective sharpening, USM, Smart Sharpen, etc... to get the look I wanted. I have no idea what Dave Hill does but he says it's 99% lighting. I agree.

This is my attempt getting the "Gary Land" look, i posted it in a Gary Land thread and some guys said that it looks Hillish, Anyway, somehow all these photogs get a hyper-real look.

There is a thrid image that i used for the sky that i got last week.
I tried to do the most non-destructive editing possible but i had to keep merging layers (the file size tended to bog down my computer) it still ended up at almost 200 mb.

So, I am a relative newb with PhotoShop (6 months) and I'm hung up on one of the steps. Can someone help?
----------------------
For this step you need to do the following
DUPLICATE LAYER on layer pallette
FILTER - BLUR - GAUSSIAN BLUR 9.4 pixels
FILTER - NOISE - ADD NOISE 3%
from the top menu select LAYER - ADD LAYER MASK - HIDE ALL
using the lasso tool select only the eyes and choose SELECT - FEATHER about 6pixels
Choose SELECT - INVERSE
now use the brush on the tool pallette and set the brush opacity to 30% - brush over the entire image
Now FLATTEN the image
-----------------------------------------
When it gets to the "now use the brush on the tool palate" step, I clicked on the brush tool on the left side of the screen, selected 30% up at the top of the screen, and then painted over the entire picture. I am seeing no change to the picture. When I flatten the image (next step) the eyes are still selected. I can't see that painting did anything. Am I missing an obvious step?
Can anyone help me with this - what am I doing wrong? I must be missing something obvious here...

@ John_paris..
you can try all you want, to convince me it isnt Hating...but go back through this thread and read some of the remarks... just do it. Why would trying to emulate this style, even with just PS and not in the actual shoot, cause so much grief for someone they feel the need to respond in a rude manor. Do you think theyd do that in real life? in person? I highly doubt it.

@definetlyoverdone: I can only speak for myself. I just find it depressing that in a forum about off-camera flash, an attempt to replicate a technique which relies heavily on a certain style of lighting has turned into a mish-mash of photoshopping. If it's just about the post, then there are far better groups to discuss that. Any attempts to move people in the direction of actually attempting the lighting are met with "Oh, but he uses lots of really expensive lights so obviously we can't do it" without any of the thinking-out-of-the-box that seems so common elsewhere in the forum.
Call that "hating" if you like. I think at this point I'll officially give up! :-)

Jon,im not saying youre a hater, ... post processing has alot to do with digital photography, its about as much a part of this as taking the actual photo. A discussian like this one is, I admit, better suited for one of the photoshop groups but... if some of the guys who can do this with lighting would show us how, then this thread would probably go off and find a quiet place to die. I mean, all those who supposedly "know how to do this the right way, with lighting" arent helping matters by poppin on and saying, ewww these are horrible" or "i only use lighting, i dont use post processing" maybe they should put the $$ where their mouth is then... ive yet to see a tutorial or even an idea on how this look is achieved with lighting only and no post processing... its like they are trying to hide the key to the golden crapper or something...lol

@definitelyoverdone...
you know how dave hill figured out his lighting? someone didn't just show him an online tutorial or a flickr strobist post.
he learned by practicing for years. trying new things, different setups, not being afraid to grab his friends and go out to the park or the backyard or the garage and just setup, shoot, take notes. and then afterwards same thing : different setup, shoot again, take notes.
when his friends got tired and left, he called up other people, hauled his lights over and shot them.
get some lights --- they don't have to be expensive. get the cheapest you can find that do what you're wanting to do. still too expensive? work a couple extra jobs, save up your money after a few months and buy ONE light. then save up, buy a second light.
figuring this lighting stuff out is a lot of hard work. call up some photographers and ask to be an assistant. be persistent enough, polite enough, be a genuine person that wants to learn the process, and they might say yes and let you help them.
i'm NOT trying to be mean or short.... just trying to educate. if i could list the many crappy tasks/jobs i've had to do—not just tiring and long but also hazardous to my health!!— in picking up the trade...
and by crappy i mean the things i look back and say, "those were the BEST times because I learned or experienced THIS or gained trust in that"... and in hindsight, the most fun.
good luck and enjoy the process!

@sb's around you - try switching the colour of the brush. If it's white try black or vice versa. Basically the brush colour should be the opposite colour of the mask.

Like Mr benjaminian says it´s hard work.
I think in the end the eye tells you all. Not a ps work or something else.
Manly if you get the point and get the image as your eye says than you will get the image. A play with light is something that we all want to learn and maby one day we will. In the mean time try to get your own style and then rock and roll.

I agree with benjaminian. Learning techniques is hard work... but part of learning is talking about those techniques on places like Flickr! To me we're all learning a new technique here that has never (to my knowledge) been taught by anyone. Listen to what people say here. View their samples - no matter how off the mark some of them are (mine included). Thats how we learn (in addition to being an assistant and what benjaminian said).
For my shot of the guy with the guitar, I lit it with similar lighting I observed Dave Hill use. A small softbox as the key light and a light coming from the right side. Yes, I realize that Hill can be seen using large softboxes but his sets are a lot larger so he needs more light usually - I didn't in this shot. (I didn't have a 3rd light unfortunately but the shot worked for me anyway).
I then used layers and unsharp masking as well as smart sharpen and creative dodging and burning to get the look I wanted.

I played with the colors after using the technique to get the final result. I also made the process into an action split into two parts. I run the first, circle the eyes with the lasso and then run the second. I also altered it so it keeps it all in its own layer (I never completely flatten all the layers) so I can paint back in detail where desired.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your investigating with us all. It is a blessing.

So, I can't get this effect to work. I've tried many many times, both following the instructions exactly and experimenting some on my own but it always craps itself in the end. So, what could I be doing wrong?
Because the only thing that happens for me is that when I add the sharpening in the end I get some aura around everything and if I add less it just doesn't do anything. I also don't get the painting-like effect. So what the heck could I be doing wrong?

Ok, Hi folks , this is my try, since the first time i saw Dave Hill's photos, the feeling was the same i had when i first saw HDR images long time ago.
So after trying some steps people published here and been at home with nothing better to do (TV is boring) i started thinking again about my first feelings with Dave's photos and HDR and i decided to give it a try.
So i downloaded a trial of the plugin for photosho for the hdr merge, Tonemapping plug/in i started playing with some photos and ended playing with some portraits and this is what i ended with.
Photo taken with metz 45 bounced into umbrella over the camera left, and procesed with hdr merge in photoshopcs3, and some other adjustmenst after that.
Tell me what you think
Thanks and sorry for my english

Hi Imagespike
You are correct, the issue with this is that this picture is not actually good for this kind of modification. It's because oryginal is "moved" and there is no detail on the skin. That's why after photoshoping it looks like the skin is to smooth... but thats my first try :)
Now i must make a proper studio shot with nice details. Then it will work more fine :)

@Luiz: How can I put this politely?
Er....
God-damn that's atrocious. Seriously now. Look at this or this, this, or perhaps this, and try and describe exactly what similarities your image has with any of those! Go on!
It would appear that the point bears mentioning again... first you need an image to which this can be applied. This means wrap-around lighting and strong highlights. Then for his "look" you need a decent background. Sharp to infinity. Then when you have these basics you can work towards the "look".
Applying the recipe above to any old image does not produce the "Dave Hill Look". It produces the "I Haven't A Bloody Clue What I'm Doing, But I Can Sure As Hell Rub This Turd Look"
Er... not as polite as envisaged... terribly sorry an' all that.

To be honest I feel like this effect could easily be duplicated using a program with tonemapping like photomatix provided you lit the subject correctly.
For example:

or

Not that either of those are lit correctly, but they have the same feel to the overall effect that most people are producing here. It seems to me that a really good 3 point lighting setup is bare minimum to get the highlights to look they way they should to match the effect... anyway that's just my take I could be totally wrong.

So, it's the "Dave Hill Look" that's a modern benchmark, eh? I was trying to find out who originated the concept to that modern edgy look that I attempted to fumble around with myself (by downloading and applying a few PS Actions). Here's my lame attempt at this pseudo-Dave Hill look:

Interestingly -- one of my favorite pictures to this day was shot on my D1H, so it can only be enlarged so big. I've tried desperately to go back to the same spot with my newer gear and improve upon the flaws I find in my original image.
Even after several attempts, I cannot recreate the "Paul Marsh Look" in that scene, so I'm not even going to try and recreate someone else's...

The layer mask only responds to black and white. Yeah you can paint it in red but the effect will just be measured by the darkness of the color. So black and white only with changing the brushes opacity.
