Skyports have landed

Patrick N says:

After waiting for ages I finally got my hands on a set of Elinchrom Skyport wireless remotes. I bought the universal set for £115 from Speedgraphic.co.uk at the Focus on Imaging show in Birmingham. I have only managed to play with them briefly but so far I am more than happy.

First impressions are that the transmitter is tiny. It takes on lithium battery that is supposed to last 3 months (if you remember to turn the unit off), but we shall see. The reciever is slightly bigger and heavier, probably due to the rechargeable battery. They come with a couple of different leads; a 3.5mm to 3.5mm jack, (there is a 3.5mm socket on the receiver), a 3.5mm to some large plug which I assume is for an Elinchrom studio light. I had to make a 3.5mm to PC synch socket to plug into my SB800 but it wasn't too difficult.

Only criticism so far is that the rotating antennae on both transmitter and receiver seems a bit flimsy and I can see it breaking off if you are not carefull.

Using the remotes is simple, there is a 3 way DIP switch on both units to set the channel. I left mine on the default. You can also have up to 4 groups, but as I only have one receiver I can't make use of this. The transmitter will communicate with a single group or all groups. Again with only one receiver I can't make use of this.

With the transmitter on the hotshoe of my D200 and the receiver connected to the PC socket on my SB800 I tried a few tests and the Skyport performed flawlessly. It was great not having cables trailing about the place. I have only tested upto a distance of about 10m but not had any missfires or other problems.

That's about it for now. If anyone wants any specific information or wants me to try any particular test then please let em know.

Possibly the 225USD is for both a transmitter and a receiver, but the 188USD Pocket Wizard is only for one "transceiver", and you need two for a set. (so a set of Pocket Wizard Transceivers would be 376USD).

Enjoy! Lon

They are not available in the states yet. As I understand it, Bogen is still in negotiations with the FCC in the USA.
I would expect them by the summer. Be happy if they come sooner, but don't expect it.
And I really hope they turn out to be all they promise.
I have very little confidence in Bogen's ability to deliver right now. And Elinchrom is infamous for creating great products without providing sufficient stock. I'm hoping I will see a sample real soon, but if it's going to be another 3373 fiasco, they can keep 'em.
Of course, they'll be off to David a few days after they come in - for him to test and evaluate.
Keep your fingers crossed, but don't hold your breath...

Apparently you can get software, plug the usb bit into your computer and make lots of changes to the lights using your lappy, or something like that.

Quote from the Farkas link
The Computer Remote/RX Trigger Set takes the same kit above and adds a USB nub with an antenna. Plug it into your laptop or studio computer and you can control even more parameters. The software will automatically find all RX transceivers and correctly identify models and number of heads plugged in. You can program in sequencing and even save an entire studio lighting setup and reload it to your lights at a later date. This kit will retail for $250.

These triggers work really well.

No misfires from the flash and more importantly no messing around with diy methods to get them to work with canon flashes.

Open the box, plug em in and off you go.

Size of units here:

www.flickr.com/photos/48942645@N00/400948689

Plus as a bonus I can change the power of my Elinchrom heads from the transmitter.

The only draw back is the 580ex will not fire when it is set to "master". Its not a major problem (I have four receivers) but if you just buy the kit (transmiter and one receiver) it could cause a bit of bother.

Also the universal receiver unit is in short supply at the moment - unless you know where to buy them that is ;-)

The big detail for me is the sync speed. Supposedly it'll go up to 1/1000 if your camera can sync that fast. That seals it for me. I'm waiting for these. The funny bit is I was actually on the phone with Moishe yesterday to order the pocket wizards, but he didn't have a couple other things I needed, so I told him I would wait. Boy am I glad I did!

Paulo Rodrigues2006 - "Spill the beans Stu, I'm desperate to get a couple of recievers."

from the flash centre (got one, they split a kit for me) and on a job last week from a shop in Berlin ( got two ). I also have a mate coming over from Canada next week with one as well.

However, it would seem that the receivers are in short supply across europe. Elinchrom underestimated the demand.

Jon Leighton - "saundstu: how are you attaching it to your 580EX?"

You will need:
Kaiser 1301 Flash Shoe Adapter
www.warehouseexpress.co.uk/index.asp?photo/flashguns/kais...

and a Miniphone to pc Female adapter.Try the flash centre for that.

connect it as in:

compare the price locally:

PocketWizard PLUS 11 Transceiver Set £250 + vat (another 17.5%) in the UK.
teamworkphoto.com/pocketwizard.html

Elinchrom universal set £99 +vat. (half the price of PW's)

When they hit the states I would imaging the same sort of price difference (Moishe must have an idea of price, no?)

Nope it was the single receiver set they split. That took a lot of persuasion though and to be honest I think they agreed just to get shot of me ;)

There are some online stores on the continent that have them but they are going fast.

you could always buy another single set, the price isn't that different (£65 + vat for the receiver on its own) and have a spare transmitter.

They do work exceptionally well.

As far as price is concerned they definately fill the gap. But if you have Elinchrom heads (I don't) then they offer considerably more than PW's. From what I read it is possible to control several Elinchrom heads from your computer using the Skyports and the USB module.

My one criticism of the skyport is that it doesn't lock onto the hot shoe securely, I already dropped the thing twice, because it slipped off the hot shoe. Looks like a little gaffa tape may be in order.

They're smaller than I expected, and lighter. They work great. Mine came with a miniphone to PC cord as well... which will be useful when I find an SB24 or break down and buy the Vivitar, but hooking up to my Canon flash required an extra $30 worth of adapters.

PANZERWOLF says:

i got an universal set too
in general, it works really well, BUT:

- maybe it's just my camera, i haven't tested this on others, but when the transmitter is set to "off"and i snap a shot with my canon 10D, i get an "error 99" (camera locks up, and has to be turned off and on again)
this happens both in the hotshoe and with the sync cable
when it's set to "all" or "group" (the both on modes), it works, but if i turn it off and shoot, i have to take it off as well

- the on/off switch of the receiver is a protruding push switch, and can turn itself on in the bag (happened to me already)
i glued a ring of neoprene foam around it, to prevent that in the future
(why not a sliding switch like on the transmitter? i'd much prefer that, it would also be easier to see if it's turned on, now you can only see it from a led, which only blinks every few seconds)

- the receiver doesn't have a led to confirm its operation, this makes ruling out a weak or empty battery more complicated

- mine didn't come with a miniphone to pc cord (a minor hassle, since i make such adapters myself for ~2 bucks)

when i first opened the package, i was amazed and a bit concerned by the size of both units, it all looked so tiny and fragile
but after having handled them for some time, they seem to be well made after all
time will tell

so far, the range and reliability is very pleasing, which is why i got that thing in the first place (after some troubles with ebay remotes), and the group switching will come in handy for test-lighting too, (once i get the additional receivers)

still the best alternative to pocket wizards at the moment

These are the only downsides I've had yet. The swich on the receiver being the biggest part. Just found out a couple of days ago that the battery had died because the receiver had swicthed on in the bag when I had just set up for a shot. I need to try something similar to Panzerwolf's idea.

By a strange twist of fate I mention to speedgraphic that I would buy one from the flash centre if they couldn't get me one for the weekend and it turns out that they buy them from the flashcentre. So I got a refund and headed down there yesterday to get one.

It looks like they are sold out again. Good news for London Strobists is that they are still prepared to sell the recievers seperately for £65, they are hedging on getting reciever only kits in the future to make back up into packs.

The bad news is that the new stock all appears to have that braindead pushbutton on the reciever. I was wondering what Panzerwolk and Alks were going on about because my first reciever had a slider switch, which meant I only had myself to blame if it went dead.

Now, where can I get a neoprene ring?

I guess an email to the Elincrom customer service department might be in order, because that pushbutton is a deal breaker for me.

Big difference if your shooting action ( i shoot skateboarding) and missing that one they pulled off cus your flash didnt fire gets unacceptable real fast.

The Aussie distributor is quite a bit more expensive than on Adorma/Amazon/B&H, BUT I have experienced shipping challenges from the USA. Generally stuff is sent via UPS which gets as far as mainland Australia and then stops. I then have to organise someone to send it onto me. The joys of living remotely. The prices are definitely better in the USA. Are there any suppliers in Asia?
