... and/or without looking at your digital screen from above (or below). basically, shooting by looking with your eyes and aiming your camera with your hand(s).

Didn't know of the term or style "hipshot", seems that everybody gets the same idea about something (again)..

Lucky shot. Most of the time I cut at head level.

She sat in front of me at the aquarium and I didn't want to make it obvious so I snapped the shot with the camera on my lap...

I only manage to get blurry shots when I shoot from the hip. Specially when it's getting dark!.

... strolling some small street in San Francisco's chinatown
I did a lot of pictures "from the hip" from this journey on - a lot of them would make a great "feet of innocent bystanders"-thread :)

I was on a bus in Puerto Vallarta on the Pacific coast of Mexico, I was surepticiously taking pictures while pretending to be looking elsewhere, but this kid knew what I was doing.

I was wondering if folks here would be willing to share what their favorite camera is for taking photos in non typical orientation (other than the normal eye to the viewfinder) or even just what camera they love to carry on the streets. And why?

waywuwei, the camera I use now is a Casio Exilim. Very basic point and shoot, and the reason is very straighforward: it is slim, small, and light. I can carry it anywhere so I'm usually ready to take a shot when I see it (or to look for a shot when I find myself with spare time). The camera is so small that it calls little attention to itself, and that has also affected my style lately. More voyeuristic maybe.
For from the hip work a swiveling viewfinder would be nice, but that means more and I probably wouldn't log that around everywhere. Then again, the whole object of from the hip is to lose control and invite accident, so not seeing is part of the fun.

@ waywuwei: I now use a Canon Powershot S-500. Used a Powershot S-100 before "upgrading", but I am prone to think that the S-100 is a better, stronger machine.

BTW, I use an old Nikon Coolpix 995 (the one with the swivel design) for IYVF (Ignore Your ViewFinder) photography. This camera is not extremely compact, but it looks so much unlike any other camera that it is the perfect tool for inconspicuous photography (the Coolpix 4500 would be another good choice). Also, this camera can be controlled just like a DSLR with all sorts of manual modes - a very cool instrument indeed.
