About St. Pancras Railway Station

St. Pancras is a railway station in central London, UK. It is the terminating station for Midland Mainline and High Speed 1 Eurostar services to Paris. A new Thameslink platform is scheduled to open on 9th December 2007.

A brief history

A stunning piece of one-upmanship on neighbouring King's Cross and Euston Stations, St. Pancras was a Victorian masterpiece finally completed in 1877. The main building was designed in Victorian gothic style by architect George Gilbert Scott, with William Henry Barlow providing the trainshed to cover platforms to the rear. When built, Barlow's trainshed was the largest enclosed space in the world.

Entering a period of decline from the mid-1930's, by the 1960's St. Pancras was at serious risk of being demolished - a fate that befell nearby Euston station and it's arch. Fortunately, a successful protest lead by characters including John Betjeman granted the building a reprieve.

Left vacant from the 1980's, St. Pancras finally got the funding it needed when it was announced that the station would be the northern terminus of the high speed rail link to the Channel Tunnel.
