About Story Week Festival of Writers

Columbia College Chicago Fiction Writing Department's Story Week Festival of Writers isa feast of readings, panels, and performances celebrating the written word. Held on campus, at the Harold Washington Library, and at such North Side venues as Metro, Martyrs’, Lincoln Hall, and Sheffield’s, all events are free and open to the general public. Story Week is co-sponsored in part by the Chicago Public Library and Metro. This program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.

In 1997, Columbia College Chicago Fiction Writing Chair and Founding Producer Randall Albers launched the first Story Week as “an experiment,” with four authors featured in a handful of events. Today Story Week has evolved into one of the most significant, energetic, and highly anticipated literary events in the Midwest, attracting an average 5,000 people each year from the Chicago area and beyond.

Since its humble beginnings, Story Week has strived to showcase some of the most diverse and high-quality writers on the literary landscape. Thousands of attendees have benefited from the wisdom of hundreds of guests including such luminaries as Joyce Carol Oates, Salman Rushdie, Studs Terkel, Dorothy Allison, Junot Diaz, Chitra Divakaruni, Edward P. Jones, Sandra Cisneros, Richard Price, Francine Prose, Sherman Alexie, Anchee Min, as well as from many lesser known, emerging writers.
