Tutorial: creating a storyboard TEMPLATE!

view profile

Bonnie@CB Portraits says:

Okay - here is a way not only to create a storyboard, but to create it so that you end up with a template that you can use over and over again - very helpful for a photography business. (I have PS - sorry, I have no idea if it can be done in Elements).
Some of it is pretty basic - but if you don't know how to use "paste into," grid lines, and the transform tool- then read on! :)

1. Create a canvas the size you want your storyboard to be. I chose 10x20. File>New>then plug in your numbers in the height and width categories. Make sure you have it set to "inches" instead of "pixels."

2. Use Grid lines to evenly space your pictures.
*You get your grid lines from the rulers so, make sure you can view your ruler bars (View>Rulers)
*Then, put your cursor on the top ruler and drag it down to get a horizontal blue grid line. Put your cursor on the left ruler bar and drag it to the right to get a vertical grid line.
*Move your grid lines until they are positioned where you want your pictures to be (see image below).
grid lines
You can see that with the grid lines, I have created 3 evenly spaced
rectangles that will be where my pictures will go.

3. Next, on a SEPARATE layer, you will make a selection the same size as your picture will be, using the grid lines you made. Look at the screen shot below.
template marching ants
The selection you make should "snap" to the grid lines. If not, go to View>snap.

4. Next you will be turning the selection into a color block.
*Use the paint bucket tool to fill in the selection with any color. It doesn't matter what color you make the color blocks - you will not see them when you are finished. After you fill in one color block, follow step 3 above to create another color block for your next picture. Do this for every picture you want to put on your storyboard. Just make sure they are all on a separate layer - this is essential! It should look like this:
3 colored squares

And Ta Da! You have just created a template!!! Make sure to save this as a .psd file.

Now, here is how you use your template to create a storyboard...
1. Make sure the pictures you want to use have all been edited.
2. While keeping your storyboard template open in PS, open your first picture. Click Select>All (you will see marching ants around it). Then go to Edit>Copy.
3. Go back to your storyboard. Make sure the layer with the square you want to put the picture on is selected. Right click on the layer and select "select layer transparency." You should see marching ants around the layer on your storyboard.
select layer transparency

3. Now, go to Edit>Paste Into (not "paste" - "Paste Into") You should see your picture paste into your color block. This is the cool thing about "paste into" - your picture will always stay the size you created your color block to be!
4. Transform your picture
Your picture probably does not look the way you want it to. So, here's what do do:
*Make sure your picture layer is selected on your layers palette and hit Ctrl+T. This will put a editing selection around your picture.
You will be dragging the CORNERS of your picture in or out, in order to fit it properly. IMPORTANT! In order to keep the ratios the same and not distort your picture - you must hold down the SHIFT key while dragging your picture corners. To undo a transformation hit "Escape." When you have it transformed to the way you want it to, hit "Enter.' You can go back at any time and redo your transformation to a picture by following these steps again.
5. Now go back and follow steps 2-4 to put each picture into its own color block.

Here is my finished template. It is very simple - you can get as creative as you want - your template doesn't have to look anything like mine! :)
Peek-a-boo

To re-use this as a template - delete or hide the previous pictures, make sure you use the "paste into" feature to copy the pictures into the color blocks, resize them using Shift+Crtl+T - and that's it!!!

I hope I didn't leave any steps out. I know this might look complicated at first, but I'd encourage you to learn it. It really isn't complicated - just detailed. Once you have your template done - it only takes minutes to insert your pictures.
This tutorial uses a lot of valuable PS features. Once you know how to use them, they will save you a lot of time in many of your other projects.
Feel free to ask if you don't understand something!

Hey guys - I think I know the problem. I wasn't specific enough at that point. Sorry!
When you are on the layer, you have to make sure you are right clicking in the little box, not on the words (ex. "layer 2"). If you right click with your mouse on the box, then you should see "select layer transparency". Does that make sense? If not, I can do a screen shot. :)

you have to put your mouse over the ruler bar, hold down the mouse button and drag a blue ruler line out of the bar area. Does that makes sense? They don't automatically show up. You drag out as many as you need, and they disappear when you drag them back to the ruler bar.

Hello, I hope someone can still answer my question. I am following the tutorial but when it's time for STEP #4, I can't make a separate layer because I think it doesn't SNAP to the grid lines. I try to go to view>snap but it's not doing anything. Therefore I can't see the "select layer transparency" when I right click on the template.

Pls help! Thanks!

WooHoo...I did this in Elements 3.0. The tutorial is pretty much the same except for step 2 as I could not get the rulers to move to create a grid. I did find the ability to see a grid in View>Grid though. However, the resizing of the images to fit in the box left them pretty distorted despite having held down the shift key. But I have made some progress and will play later as my son just woke from a nap. Thanks!

Smodger says:

Hi Bonnie, you're such a star for taking the time to share all this information!
I'm struggling with pasting in my photos.
I didn't have the option of 'Select Layer Transparency" when I right-clicked on the thumbnail for the correct layer, but managed to select the box anyway by clicking on 'Select Pixels".
Then I go to my photo, Edit, Copy (having selected it all first). Back to the template, Edit, Paste Into.
Instead of my picture appearing, a new layer is created (called Layer 2) just above the layer I wanted to add the photo to. It's got a totally white thumbnail, and a black layer mask that has a white box where I wanted my photo.
Anyone have any ideas where I'm going wrong?
Thank you!

"I wasn't specific enough at that point. Sorry!

Smodger says:

Hi Bonnie,
Thanks for replying so fast. I did see those instructions, but it's still not working. I'm using CS3, which a quick Google suggests might be the explanation. Are you using CS2?
I found a page that suggests CS3 users do the selecting by using "Select Pixels" to get the marching ants. An alternative (I'm just typing this here for the benefit of anyone else who's wondering too) is apparently to have the layer above active, then Command click (Ctrl click for PC) on the box of the layer you want. I tried both, and both seem to get the box successfully selected, but maybe it's not selected in the 'right' way, because I'm still having the problem I described above: it creates a new layer rather than pasting my photo into place.
Any ideas?
Thanks again!

Bonnie@CB Portraits says:

Sorry, I'm not sure if CS3 is doing things differently.

Did the image paste into the selected area it was supposed to? If it did, just make sure you are on the image layer and hit Ctrl+T to resize it. Make sure you hold the Shift key down the whole time and then drag the corners in or out to make it the size you need it. Hit Esc to undo it if you messed up, or Enter to accept the new size.

Smodger says:

Phew, I have finally revisited this and figured out how to make it work in CS3. S Kentish and Jen Verde, it seems it doesn't matter that CS3 places it on a new layer. Just run with it! It all works out fine in the end. I thought that was where I was going wrong, but it turned out I was trying to import PSD files instead of JPEGs.
Note to Mac users: if you're trying to resize images it's Command T, not Ctrl T as it is on a PC. But I'm actually finding it easier to quickly resize my images before I even try to import them into a storyboard, and then they pop into place perfectly.
I don't check this group very much so if anyone else is still having issues in CS3, send me a Flickr mail rather than posting your question here.
Thanks again to Bonnie for getting us 97% of the way there! It's great how you're sharing your prowess - much appreciated.

Anyone using elements (I use PSE 5) may find that holding down the shift key DOES distort your image and the proportions are maintained when you DON'T hold down the shift key. It drives me mad because it is the opposite to any other program I have ever used.

Thanks so much for this Bonnie! It's a great tutorial and I can't wait to try it out once the kids are in bed tonight. So much better than starting from scratch every time! Thanks again!!

I've been having the same luck. When I copy and paste into-the pictures sometimes fit and sometimes don't. So when I try to re-size them the picture is blurry and won't fit in the square I created. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

Bonnie@CB Portraits says:

Tanya - when you click on "select layer transparency" - are there marching ants around the colored block square you created? (Actually, after you paste your picture in, they will actually look like they are around the picture, but they really aren't).

Erica - is sounds like you aren't using 'selecting the layer transparency' and Ctrl+T (while holding shift down) to resize. The picture won't fit in properly right after you paste it. You have to resize it the way that is mentioned above.

Smodger says:

Hi everyone,
I just got an email from someone still having the problem I had earlier, where instead of pasting into the preset box the incoming photo got put on a whole new layer. In case there's anyone else out there in the same boat, I just want to reiterate my comment above that you should just run with it - it doesn't matter.
I am using CS3 on a Mac. I build my template with all the separate layers as Bonnie details above. My background layer is called Layer 1, and then say I had a three-photo template, I'd have called the next three layers Box 1, Box 2 and Box 3. To paste into Box 1, I click on Command (PC: Ctrl) and hold it down while I click on the Box 1 layer. (Note: you have to click on the box picture itself, not just the words "Box 1"). This gives the "marching ants". Then I go to the photo, Command A to select and give the marching ants, Copy, back to the template, Paste Into.
My photo appears in the first box, and over in the layers palette, a new layer has been created, called Layer 2. It includes a layer mask that shows most of my template blacked out. The layer that I created and called Box 1 looks unchanged on the layers palette, but there's this new one above it.
I then go through the same process for boxes 2 and 3, resizing images as needed (plenty of people have described above how to do that).
I end up with a seven-layered document: Layer 1 (background), Box 1, Layer 2 (which has the box 1 pic in it), Box 2, Layer 3, Box 3, Layer 4.
Quick additional note: If you ever paste your picture in and can't see it, it pays to check in the layers palette that your new layer has appeared ABOVE the box layer you wanted. When I just ran through the process so I could type up these notes, my second box didn't seem to fill properly, and it turned out the new layer (layer 3) had appeared BELOW box 2 in the layers palette. No idea why, but anyway, dragging it up above the "Box 2" layer sorted out the problem.
Good luck.
