About Stoke Newington

Known to locals as 'Stokey', Stoke Newington constitutes the northwestern portion of the London Borough of Hackney, and before the 1965 local government reorganisation was a borough in its own right. The old village core of Stoke Newington has a distinctive style, especially Stoke Newington Church Street, where every second building seems to have a heritage listing.
Stoke Newington is well endowed with open space and includes the substantial Clissold Park, together with the historic Abney Park Cemetery.

Stoke Newington boundaries
After 1965, Stoke Newington ceased to have any officially defined boundaries. In 2006, it is best defined as roughly the area encompassed by the N16 postcode, a situation brought about by the efforts of estate agents, as this enlarges Stoke Newington to take in most of the old district of Shacklewell and chunks of Stamford Hill.
But it is the best definition available, so this group will adhere to it.
Also in Stoke Newington: The complicated area around Manor House, where Hackney, Islington and Haringey meet, contains locations that can be described as being in any of Stoke Newington, Manor House or Finsbury Park, and may for example have an N4 postcode...
Not in Stoke Newington: Dalston, great as it is, is often wrongly conflated with Stoke Newington. The boundary between the two is just north of the Rio Cinema on Kingsland High Street. Hackney Downs is also not in Stoke Newington. (Neither is Stamford Hill, but it does have an N16 postcode, so this will be interpreted liberally.)
