About St Mary's Girls Drum and Bell Corps
The St. Mary's Girls Drum and Bell Corps has been one of the brightest jewels of St. Mary's School and San Francisco's Chinatown for seventy years.
The Drum and Bell Corps was was organized in 1940 by John Yehall Chin, at the suggestion of Fr. George Johnson, and started its first practices using only the tables and chairs in the St. Mary's School cafeteria as drums. Over the course of a year, the Corps inherited proper drums and grew quickly in skill and recognition, winning awards at parades and performing at wartime fundraisers throughout California. The Corps's signature bells, or glockenspiels, and its festive, traditional Chinese costumes were added soon thereafter, adding vitality and a unique sound to the Corps's vibrant performances.
Since its formation, the Drum and Bell Corps has charmed audiences throughout California, the United States, and even across the Pacific. Most recently, the Corps performed in Shanghai, China, as part of the San Francisco-Shanghai Sister City Celebration coinciding with the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai.
