Yeah, they have a very strong 'non photography' policy, even the staff are not allowed to take pictures inside, an actual Starbucks Barrista told me that. I am in there nearly every day, i have taken a few pics inside, one is on my stream, but you do need to be very covert, especially with an slr as big as my usual Minolta Dynax 9. the only successful way i have seen it to use camera phones.

That's weird because there is another Starbucks Flickr group that is actually run and approved by Starbucks. They need to get their policy straight.

This is similar to the Amtrak Photo Contest last year that put a photorapher in jail and end up being the butt of the Colbert Report and late night comics.
This nonsense has been going on since last September. Starbucks has had a few screamers, camera grabbers, and lens coverers but fortunately so far nobody has ended up in jail that we know of.
It appears that corporate marketing people were in a hurry to get into the Facebook and Twitter freebie advertising nonsense but when they tried Flicker found that there were real issues that nobody was able or willing to deal with.

New intro message on the StarbucksCoffeeCompany group
analisamarie (a group admin) says:
29 Jan 10 - This group has helped inform us of the inconsistent experiences photographers have in our stores. We have put group discussion on hold until we have more updates on an official policy for photography in our stores. We appreciate your patience and encourage you to check back in the following months for an update.
In other words, it might take us months to straighten it out so until then stop talking about it.

Thomas Hawk I recommended the group be deleted so I'm fine on her locking discussion. We've said pretty much all there is to say until Starbucks figures out what they want to do.

Wow! Apparently I've been banned from the "official" Starbucks Coffee Company group. I guess I should be proud of myself. Unless they've locked down the photo uploads too. Is anyone else experiencing a lockout from posting photos to their group pool or is it just me?

I just tried, and it didn't give me a problem.

It will be interesting to see if the official Starbucks group starts banning people because of activity in this group or photography is not a crime group. Technically they can ban anyone that they want.

Okay, I stand corrected. I just now posted a photo to the official group from a different wifi connection, so it might have been a glitch in the system. I do think it's a little odd that I was able to post the same photo here in this group, but not to the official group. Who knows? Maybe they banned me and then reconsidered. I did try several times, but kept getting the same message that the photo had already been added to the group, had been added to too many groups already, or did not comply with the group rules. Maybe flickr had the hiccups again. Difficult to know for sure when all you're dealing with is electrons. -Never mind.

There is a standard mail message that you get from Flickr when you get tossed from a group.

I have been told by a manager that I can take a photo inside their store, but it can only be taken looking out the windows. They won't allow photography pointed toward the register or at the cameras.
Maybe it's because they know me, but I've seen them tell other people too.

Weird. I was at the Starbucks #1 store at Pike Place Market a couple of weeks back and was told that the only thing they prohibit is taking photos of their menus. Anything else was fine.

Pike Place being the Mecca of Starbucks junkies, I think they would have a very difficult time trying to stop photography. It would be like trying to ban it at DisneyLand :)

I took this in a Starbucks here in Canada. I have a very large camera and it was easily seen, and I had no problem.

I was in a Starbucks today meeting up with a new photography friend. We had our Nikon DSLRs out on the table with our lenses, etc.
We were talking, laughing, drinking Starbucks drinks, snapping photos of each other, discussing lenses, etc. I was testing out her Nikon D700 camera and using the flash. She was isntructing me on how to use it and change the settings etc. I stood up to see if I could take a shot and bounce the light off of the ceiling.
Since I didn't want to take photos of the people in the store (which I find rude without someone asking permission) I figured I would take photos of the items in the store and the store itself.
I took a picture of the lights and then a bag of coffee. I then was testing the light in one section of the shop when a man approached me quite abruptly and very close to my face, and said that "photography is not allowed in Starbucks". I jsut looked at him confused and like who the heck are you? And I said and you work for??? (he was not dressed in a Starbucks uniform or a nametag etc. He was wearing business attire, khaki pants and a blue and white striped button down, long sleeve shirt. Just looked like a patron.
I said incredulously, So you work for Star... and he said yes, I do I work for Starbucks and whipped out his business card and said that photography is not allowed in the store. He said I saw your flash go off and if you were taking a photograph of your sister or friend well that is ok but we don't allow photos of the sign boards or product displays as competitors come in and try to take photos of our displays. I was like ohhhhhh kkkkk. I said well I am just practicing and I showed him the two i had taken and as he was talking I deleted them.
You would think that there would be signs that say NO PHOTOGRAPHY ALLOWED and if I was a competitor I certainly wouldn't be there walking around with a big huge Nikon D700 and 24-70mm lens going oh heyyyyyyy look at me taking photos! oh hayyyyyyyyyyyy!!!
I guess I am thankful that he did it semi-discreetly and didn't embarrass me in front of everyone. I literally had ZERO awareness that there was even a notion of 'no photography allowed.' Most of the time places will say it, big and huge on a sign on their front doors, like museums, etc.
ugh.
Turns out he was a district manager from the next state over. Its interesting how the barristas didn't say a word to me when I was snapping. How ironic was it that there was a district manager in that store that very day and time that I was there meeting up with a new friend. I don't even use that Starbucks much, it's not the one closest to me but the one equal distances between my house and my friends.
I honestly had no idea there was a policy or a notion of a policy at Starbucks. Has there been any definitive answer? Cause I'd really like to email this guy.

@Jennifer - well - I guess they have to walk a fine line, not wanting their clients annoyed, and avoiding potential hassles. So mostly common sense and discretion would prevail.. Having signs also is an annoyance.
That being said, you can get some great street style shots in Starbucks as well as in any coffeshop.

And at Jane's in the West Village

There are a lot of stores and restaurants(if the camera starts wondering away from personal parties)) that do not allow photos to be taken inside. I have been asked more than once not to take photos. Go to any mall and see how long you can take photos, talking dslr here. With the good p&S and cell phone cameras it is getting pretty foolish. I am not sure what they worry about. I have had small shop owners ask me to put the camera away.

The answer is simple. If you want to take pictures don't waste your time or money at a Starbucks store. The official corporate Starbucks group on Flickr was just a market misjudgment.

peets doesn't either, as apocryphal info shows here, some SBs care some don't.
as far as Peets goes, the employees go apeshit every time anyone whips out a camera.
