About Square Sensor

This group is a movement to suggest manufacturers market cameras with a square sensor of 40x40 mm, larger than the standard film-size crop of 36mm, and instead of landscape/portrait orientation. It would take full advantage of lens capacity in every direction, whether it is a smaller format lens or a full-size format lens. After all, the image projected through a lens is circular, not rectangular or square. Orientation would not matter. You would not have to constantly turn the camera if you want a portrait. You would not even have to hold the camera horizontally. When you remove the lens hood you could even explore edge vignetting creatively. With digital photography the square format could easily be cropped to landscape or portrait, or left as is.

The insistence of manufacturers to stay with the rectangular format is a persistent fossil of film photography.
