Group DescriptionSPUDS is a nationwide campaign promoting the cultivation of naturally blight resistant potatoes to reduce our carbon footprint and diminish dependency on chemicals in the Irish food system.
This summer 300+ Irish farmers and individuals are growing naturally blight resistant potatoes as an alternative to conventional varieties that require spraying as part of a community based research project. The programme responds to the ongoing challenge blight presents to Ireland's move toward environmentally sensitive agriculture. Our study aims to demonstrate that naturally blight resistant potatoes are tasty, easy to grow, environmentally friendly and commercially viable.
Far too many tasty nutritious potatoes grown in Ireland today are rejected by the marketplace simply because of their shape. SPUDS characters celebrate the high nutritional content and sustainability of potatoes as our local source of carbohydrate and say: 'We dig ALL potatoes no matter what their variety, size, colour or shape!
