About Spirit of Detroit
WIN A TRIP TO LONDON + SEE YOUR PHOTO ON EXHIBITION IN THE WEST END
As Detroit celebrates its 310th birthday this year (July 24th to be exact) there’s plenty to celebrate about the spirit of the city: its people, its history and its future. So engineering consultancy Buro Happold has teamed up with World Architecture News to bring you the Spirit of Detroit photography competition and exhibition.
Detroit remains renowned for its great contributions to the world: Motor Town at the innovative heart of the US auto industry and the music and entertainment heart of Motown. Both the auto and music industries have changed the world – not just the US.
Today, Detroit is a global hub for business and sports and is home to some great teams: Tigers, Red Wings, Lions and Pistons… there’s a new energy in the city. Detroit is looking to the future – building on hard-learnt lessons from a tough past with a rich heritage and new sense of purpose.
Having made such a positive, indelible mark on the world, the story of Detroit’s regeneration in a post industrial economy has caught imaginations across the globe. It’s this that has inspired the Spirit of Detroit photo competition and free exhibition in the heart of London’s West End.
Show and tell
We‘re asking everyone to take a fresh look at Detroit’s pioneering spirit and take part in our photo competition.
Entrants can join the Spirit of Detroit group on Flickr and upload up to five images that you own or have taken which you believe illustrate the spirit of Detroit.
They could be pictures that illustrate important aspects about the history of Detroit, life in the city, or images that depict its potential future. Your photographs might focus on the buildings, the local landscape, the people of Detroit or something completely different! We want you to share the spirit that you’ve found in Detroit that‘s made it a great place to visit, live, work or play in.
Hosted on Flickr and supported by international engineering firm Buro Happold – working in partnership with World Architecture News – we’re looking for an image that unquestionably encapsulates the spirit of Detroit.
The judging panel, made up of some of the most senior and respected architects, engineers, artists and designers of our day, will select one overall winner and two runners up.
These photos will be included in the Spirit of Detroit photo exhibition, opening on February 9th in Newman St in London’s West End.
