About Southern Unionists
In the American Civil War (1861-1865), the unanimity of the South in rebellion is a widely held myth. In fact, there existed a wide disparity of sentiments. Many Southerners were ardently opposed to secession, some even taking up arms against the Confederacy. Every Southern state held pockets of citizens, politicians, soldiers, or guerrillas who adhered to the Union and openly resisted the Confederate cause. Every Southern state except South Carolina contributed at least one regiment to the Union Army. These men and women did not consider themselves disloyal to the South, but loyal to the United States. Like their Confederate brethren, they fought to defend their homes, neighborhoods, and families, and stood up bravely for principles they held to be true and right. This group is to document the lives and careers of these Southern Unionists. Some suggested postings (by no means limited to this list):
* Tombstone photographs of the graves of Southern Unionist soldiers (usually identifiable by the Federal Shield)
* Old photographs of the Unionists themselves
* Photographs of the homes of well known Unionists
* Monuments or memorials to Unionist soldiers in Southern states
