About A New Flora of the Sheffield Area

In 1988 the Sorby Natural History Society published a book titled 'A Flora of the Sheffield Area: Two Hundred Years of Plant Records' (edited by Margaret Shaw).

The society is now planning a follow-up publication to show how the distribution of plants has changed in recent decades. This Flickr group has been set up to enable people to submit photos of vascular plants, which must have been taken within recording area shown below.

Sorby Flora Recording Area

The map above was produced with DMAP software developed by Alan Morton, using records from the Sorby Plant Database held by Alan Woodcock. A dot indicates a record in a 1km square. Grey indicates urban areas and wiggly lines are rivers. Straight lines are the national gridlines with their numbers. Calluna vulgaris is Heather or Ling.

The photos submitted to this group will be used as a source of plant records. You are welcome to submit a photo even if you're not sure what the plant is. Someone in the group may be able to help you identify it!

Please include as much information as you can in the description of each photo that you submit. Here is an example of the sort of information that we need:

Bryony Berries

Black Bryony (Tamus communis).
Growing in a roadside hedgerow near Damflask Reservoir, South Yorkshire.
OS grid reference: SK276905.
Photographed on 14th October 2011.

Please give a six-figure Ordnance Survey grid reference if you can. If you can't manage that, a four-figure grid ref is still useful. The Grab-a-Grid-Reference website is a handy tool for checking grid references.

As well as describing the location, please also provide some basic information about the habitat in which you found the plant.

For rare and vulnerable plants (such as orchids), it is best not to publicly display detailed information about their location. Instead, you can submit the information directly to the society and it will treated as confidential. Email plantrecords@sorby.org.uk.

The Sorby Natural History Society is registered charity, established in 1918. It covers a wide range of interests and caters for all abilities, from beginners to specialists. You can find much more information on our website: Sorby Natural History Society, Sheffield
