Haven't had the error message so far, but it's good to know in case it happens. Thanks for the post.

You'll also get this error message if you drain out the batteries completely. Just take them out and charge.

I get this error message all the time, every time when putting in the battery pack tray with two batteries, have followed this process from the start. It seems that just fiddling with it over and over again will get it to work. Neither battery is dead.
I actually had this happen in the MIDDLE of a shoot on Sunday, quickly removed one of the two batteries from the grip, and was on my merry way.
I'm suspecting the grip-to-body electrical contacts, but I can't say for sure.

I was shooting the with vertical grip this Sunday just gone, and kept coming up with this message. I had previously never had the problem. I took the battery tray out, undid the grip, put it back on, and re-inserted the batteries, and the problem did not present itself again.
I had assumed with v4 firmware, that this problem might have been solved (especially considering I had never had the problem before).

Just FYI, with my A700 I'm getting this issue alot currently. Its very annoying. Fully charged batteries and I have to remove the batteries, remove the grip, reinstall the grip and reinsert the batteries...

@Dana Lane Photography: Next time you take it apart, get some IPA and clean the grip contacts on top of the posts that go into the camera body AND the contacts they mate with inside the camera body. See if that improves the situation.

By the way guys, I never posted about it so here:
I was still getting problems even after firmware v4. Sony replaced the grip's battery tray under warranty.

I know this is an old thread, but just thought I would say that when shooting a wedding this weekend, my camera started giving this error message, and despite only (ever) using official Sony batteries, the message would not go away. Previously when I had this message on the A700, I was able to correct the situation, by removing the battery tray, removing the grip, re-attaching, and re-inserting the tray, but this time, it would not work. I had to shoot the entire day with a single battery in the grip, swapping when the first of the two ran out.
I have the latest firmware on my A700. I have not tried to insert two batteries since the weekend, but I am concerned this may be a constant issue that I am going to have to live with.

I had this error message for the first time this weekend after a couple of hours shooting.
Without having read this thread previously, I simply took out and reloaded my batteries and they showed 100% and 60% "full".
I have had the batteries from new (Feb 2008)

I only got this error when using generic batteries, sometimes without the grip. Also happens in my A350, with or without grip. It's one of the reasons I've now sworn off of using generic batteries, especially since Sony batteries come up on ebay quite cheap at times.

you can use a single battery in the grip.

Yeah - they are designed to house two, but having one in will not cause any problems. In the issues I had (mentioned above) the only way I could use the grip on the A700 was with a single battery in it.

nmg+ I managed to get mine repaired (under extended warranty). I think all they did was clean the contacts inside the grip.

I used to have this problem all the time with my A700. it even happened a couple of times during an event shooting. it was so embarrasing. sometimes you only get one time for a shot and i had missed some very important shots because of my lithium battery. i did some research and found out that the Batts, that i was using were not true InfoLIthium batteries. they were replacements. I bought Two InfoLithium batteries that was on sale from Sony and i never had this issue again......
so i thought that it was the contacts, dirt on contacts and so on. but the real problem was just that i was using a secondary battery that was a InfoLithium replacement. Got the real deal and it tottaly fixed my issue!!!!!!
