About Rock + Roll Karaoke
undays at The Village, Wexford St., Dublin.
Musical salvation for Sundays. Exorcise your demons with Rock + Roll Karaoke slots throughout the night. Songs of Faith and Devotion from Rory Montane & Murt. All held together with God's glue by Sister Barbara.
Songs of Praise is 'Dublin's most successful and only credible Karaoke' The Irish Times.
It's been running in the Village Venue on Wexford Street since March 2005 and is "now firmly established as the city's place to go on the Lord's Day". [The Guardian]. Its 2nd Birthday took place on April 8th.
The concept itself is simple. We get people to do Rock & Roll Karaoke songs on a big stage thru' a very loud sound system. Rock & Roll Karaoke is credible, alternative rock songs. Think Bon Jovi, Kaiser Chiefs, Van Halen, U2, Sex Pistols etc. There's no ABBA on OUR list. And it works. It works so well and people have so much fun that it has made Karaoke COOL. Very cool. We've had the Killers in for a look, we've had Tony Bennet in the audience, we've had every Dublin muso on stage. We've also had a lot of fun. And so have the punters.
Now, it's not only Karaoke. It's Djs too and it's audience interaction through our host, Sister Barbara. The formula runs like this; we do 20 minutes of DJ action and then it's over to the, Marshall Stack back dropped, stage for 15 minutes of Rock & Roll Karaoke - all seamlessly achieved though the host of the night, Sister Barbara. Then back to the DJ for some more alternative tunes. So in essence what the audience get is the best of both worlds - big indie and rock classics from the Djs and big indie and rock classics from themselves and their mates. They also get to point the finger and laugh a lot. This is what makes it so special - as sometimes the worst singers are actually the best entertainment.
In Dublin Magazine has "been having some much covert fun. We decided we had to share the fun with you lot", while The Dubliner says it's "Dublin's best karaoke night."
