About Slices of Life [Second Chance Photos]

SECOND REVISION SLICING INTRODUCTION

Welcome to Slices Of Life!

If you've made your way to this group you're either lucky enough to have been invited or curious enough to have followed a link from someones photostream, either way youre more than welcome here and we hope you'll join us for some slicing madness!

What's this all about?

In short, this group and its pool are a place for people to take part in a project/concept I (Photomacography) have come up with.

What's this concept and how's it work?!

The concept is a simple one, and it's aim even simpler.

In the quest to take beautiful, clever, technically stunning, colourful and interesting shots; we all take more photo's than we would ever upload. Much much more. And while the idea that "From many come the few beautiful" is perfectly logical and is the way with all forms of photography, this concept in imaging is a chance for those not so perfect, not quite focused, just a bit too dark, little bit too messy composition, off centre subject shots to have a second chance at life and at being something worth looking at...

Slicing is the act of taking a photo you've already taken, but that has flaws, like those listed above - or any number of reasons you may not have thought it a brilliant shot - and taking a slice from it, a narrow slice, and creating some abiguity and focusing on more abstract ideas in mundane photos.

To make the idea behind a slice more understandable, I've put together this, the second (revised!) set of upload rules, and they are listed in order of their importance...

1) AMBIGUITY! - Please dont explain the content of a slice, please dont tag them with when and where the photo was taken, and details of every item or person or animal, mineral, etc... that's in the shot. It's important that people see slices with no knowledge of what's in the shot other than what is read from the photo it's self.

2) DIMENSIONS! - Please keep your slices as close to 1024 by 210 as possible (excluding any frames)... This will make slices a more uniform concept and mean everyone is working with the same area, orientation (ie landscape/portrait or even diagonal!) is up to you though - experiement!

3) SECOND CHANCE? - It's also important that you dont go out and think to yourselves "Hum... what would look good as a slice today...?". The group and concept are about giving photos a second chance! If the photo is taken with the idea of cropping it to a slice later, the accidental nature of the slice is lost, it then becomes a photo thats of narrow shape. Keep them slices, not organised ideas!

4) COLOUR - Originally it was intended that people avoid colour, to bring the slices back to a raw image of shape, light and dark... but some stunning submissions have been made with some beautiful colours... so really it's up to you, but remember: Playing with colours can give some great results, and within this abstract setting - don't be afarid to do something new, crazy or that just looks odd...

5) FEEDBACK - Already we are building up quite a community ethic here at Second Chance Photos, and I'd love to keep it that way regardless of how big we get (or small we stay)... Please feedback as much as you can/would like to... It's great to know someone likes what youve done... And if you don't know what to say then why not try adding our "Nice Slice" icon to a comment...

Which should look like this:

Beyond these few points, all that there is to say is a very warm welcome to the group and happy slicing!
