Oh, she's so tiny! You don't notice it as much in the second picture as in the first. What a cutie!

Hey, Gaudior, good to see someone still checks in on SOFA discussions. :)

She's not "teeny tiny" but she's not as small as Dora or Patty and Eddie were when I first met them. She sure is a cutie though!

So far, I guess this thread is serving the same purpose as the set in my photostream, but maybe I'll eventually add extra notes here or something.

I'm peeking in here, too. But mainly this thread would be a reference for later, as most comments are under the individual pics, don't you think?

Yes, of course most of the comments and discussion belong under the photos. I think I'll add some progress notes here for my own reference, and of course for anyone else who is interested.

Last night (May 9th) she curled up under my hand and purred for a bit after I burped her.

She still vigorously attacks the nipple at first, but she is eating well. About 60ml four times a day.

This baby is already bonded to you. I would have liked to have eavesdropped on the conversation between her and Patty.

So, no news on the sibling? Let's hope the mom claimed him/her and took it back home!

Thank you for the updates, Mary Anne - and please keep them coming!

The eye on the blue-eyed picture still worries me, tho. I had preveously asked if there's a problem with it, did I miss the answer? Or did it just look like that on the particular picture?

Yes, the bonding has begun already. She still wants her real mama, but I'm becoming an okay substitute.

Maybe Patty will take a few minutes to write her opinion on things. :)

Oops, sorry I didn't answer about her eye. The baby's eye is okay. It was just her inner eyelid at half-mast. Might have been sleepiness or some small irritation.

No matter how you look at it...

I have added Stage 1 baby food to her diet. Various fruits and sweet potatoes. She is eating about 90 to 100 ml four times a day. At first feeding she is as grumpy as a person who has not had her coffee yet.

Peggy is not a cuddler yet, and she may never be, but we are bonding and we are playing bouncy little games now.

Peggy's Naptime

Sucked down 105ml of formula and strained bananas at lunch. Also had a go at a tiny sweet potato puff baby "Finger Food." Peggy is the quietest baby I've raised.

Her fur is starting to have the sleek well-nourished look we remember from Dora and Patty and Eddie. Those relaxed paws are a story in themselves. How are the finances? Are you interested in Raccoon Fund donations?

Honestly, yes, the orphan raccoon fund can always use a boost. (If you have a few bucks to spare, you can send it via Paypal to dora@enchantments.com) I thank you all for asking - bless you and your soft hearts! Gotta feed the kid and keep her in toys. Also, I am going to have to do some home improvements to the outdoor hidey-hole when it comes time for Peggy Sue to move out there. I am also going to make an offer to pay for a professional over to my neighbor's house to clear his attic of coons and seal it up for him. I don't even want to tell you what this jerk told me he is doing!!

Another "little" project I am working on is making a video short of the marsh and its wild inhabitants that I hope will turn out to be a sort of "Day in the Life..." kind of thing as a money raiser. What do you all think?

Crack!!! Lots happened in two months aye? Is she more of a cuddler now? Is she more comfortable in the outside pen, does she still run to the back when a racoon actually approaches? What is she "like" now? Are any raccoons particularly interested in her... like Patty? How do you feel about her being comfortable with your warm hearted dogs, will that put her at a disadvantage later? Patty seems to have figured it out though, how can humans be so stupid as to think animals aren't discerning and smart?

Well that was some free association whip cracking... pick and chose what interests you. Oh one more thing.... did I miss your addy? How much is a t-shirt? You chose... large, scooped neck and then I will combine raccoon fund and t-shirt money in one huge check ahhh hem well .... huge for me...

Oh one more thing... what in heaven's name were you doing up at 3:00 in the morning?!?!?

LOL! Gale, I love you, and I love the way your mind works. Maybe I should take another trip up to downeast and spend a few days just answering your questions... I would have material for at least a dozen books, don't you think?

Those are seriously some good questions that need answering. And oh, the stories about Dora that are still left untold... did I ever tell you, for instance, how she likes to sit on her butt with her food bowl at her side like a bowl of popcorn and watch TV? I don't know what to make of that - is it a good thing or a bad thing rotting her brain? ;)

Peggy Sue: No, she is not more of a cuddler. She's a little aligator! But she's not being a bad girl, really. In her little coon mind, the wrestling and nipping is a show of affection. How do I know? It's just the sense I get from her. She does it so... joyously! And rough-housing is a natural behavior I see outside.

Jim and his siblings seem to show the most interest in Peggy Sue. I wish I could invite one into her playhouse for a playdate for a few hours. It's kind of hard on her being an only child. I am considering moving up her release date. We'll see how it goes over the next couple of weeks.

I think this is the most important comment/observation you made: how can humans be so stupid as to think animals aren't discerning and smart?

Yes, our Patty has taught us a lot about 'smartness' and dicernment, hasn't she? I think Peggy naturally has much the same kind of street-smarts.

3:00 in the morning??? I love the moonlight. :) I had just come in from taping some coon conversation.

More later... I hope. Busy day. I'll get that email off to you some time today.

Hope Dora doesn't watch the news..... Stu wonders if she has a favorite program or more specifically are there particular thing that she hones in on? Hahaha more questions. Oh well

Definitely the most efficient thing is to come downeast and answer questions... hahaha . Yeah you've got way too much to write about.... makes it hard to write at all aye?

Ooo just thought of something. There is a book called Among the Bears by BEnjamin Kilham. He lives in NH and rehabs black bears. The book is fascinating (he works a lot like you) but also he had to pick and chose amongst an enormous amount of material..... seems like the problems he faced are similar to yours.

Oh and in small letters it says co-author Ed Gray...;) maybe that is the trick.

I can't believe it has already been two weeks since I last wrote - and promised an email to Gale. Yikes!! What can I say? I'm soooo tired of life and health issues getting in the way. Even so, I'm sorry.

That book sounds like one I neeeeed to read. Thanks for the recommendation! The co-author/ghostwriter is a consideration if I can't get it going better on my own pretty soon. I still think an intensive Q&A session would be mucho helpful.

Dora likes mellow TV best... no screaming and shouting, no laugh tracks. (I think she got this preference from me.) She likes quiet conversation, and especially a good soundtrack. She would probably like "chick flicks" if I could stomach them. She likes nature shows, but not necessarly animal shows. I think it may be that she is tuning mostly into the music. Baxter, on the other hand, loves action and comedy movies, and kid TV - the more excitement the better.

Now, for the Peggy Sue update: Like so many things that go on in the "wilds" of the Marshside Menagerie, this is also a Patty update.

As I mentioned, Peggy Sue has been spending several hours a day in the big outdoors hidey-hole. There has been some progress with everyone getting used to each other. Little Jim and his siblings have been most accepting of Peggy Sue and hanging out close to her like she "belongs" to the family, and Peggy Sue is slowly getting more comfortable around the crowd. She's a riot to watch showing off for their benefit. (Yes, I've been taking movies.)

I carry Peggy Sue to and from the hidey-hole in a portable plastic airline pet carrier. Peggy Sue is so good about getting in and out of the carrier, I just take the carrier up to the door of the hidey-hole and she hops in or out without a fuss. (Dorable could take a lesson from her on that.) Usually, everyone except a couple of insistent little ones who tug on my pants legs, backs away when I go out to get her.

For some reason tonight, our Patty took a special interest in Peggy Sue and the procedure for bringing her in. She was so interested, in fact, that she tripped me up twice! I had already spent a few minutes feeding Patty and cuddling her, so it wasn't about getting attention. When I put the carrier down at the door for Peggy Sue to get in, Patty was right there with me. She reached a hand in and touched Peggy Sue, then even stuck her head inside the crate for a nose-to-nose greeting before I closed the door.

I don't think I described it very well, but it was a moment if you know what I mean. Peggy Sue was absolutely delighted with the attention, and I think I saw something "click" in her little brain. And I am, once again, overwhelmed at Patty's sensitivity and intelligence.
